To open a NASA Planetary Data System (PDS) file, first find the product in the PDS archive, inspect its XML label to identify the format and related files, then choose a reader or conversion tool that supports that product. PDS4 is the current standard, but older PDS3 products remain in the archive, so there is no single reader or workflow for every file.
Find the data you need
Start at the PDS Data Search page. It links to search tools maintained by PDS discipline nodes, making it a useful starting point when you know the target, mission, or scientific area. For broader discovery, use PDS keyword search, which returns links to data sets and includes links to some international-agency holdings.

If you want to search programmatically, the PDS also lists a beta Search API, the Peppi Python client, and DOI search. The best route depends on how you plan to work: discipline-node interfaces are suited to focused searches, keyword search is useful for broad discovery, and the API or Python client can support scripted exploration. Check the current PDS search page for the available entry points.
Read the label before opening the data
PDS4 archives organize information into bundles, collections, and products. A product is accompanied by an XML label that describes it, provides metadata and search terms, and identifies related files. Open the label first: it helps you establish what the data object represents, which files belong together, and what documentation or format-specific reader you may need.

Do not assume a file extension alone tells you how to interpret the contents. Use the label and product documentation to determine whether the product follows PDS3 or PDS4 conventions and what its data objects contain. PDS4 is the current standard, but PDS archives include PDS3 products as well.
Choose a tool for the product and task
The official PDS tools page lists software for common tasks. Match the tool to your goal rather than treating these utilities as interchangeable:

- Validate: check PDS4 labels and data for conformance.
- Transform: convert PDS3 or PDS4 products into common formats for other software.
- PDS4 JParser: access PDS4 data objects programmatically.
For other community tools, services, and APIs, search the PDS Tool Registry. Before relying on any tool, confirm that it supports the product’s standard and data type; a conversion or parser that works for one product is not necessarily appropriate for another.

The PDS4 documentation includes introductory concepts, a glossary, standards references, dictionaries, examples, and supporting material. PDS training is intended for data users as well as data preparers. Consult these resources when a label field, relationship, or format convention is unclear instead of guessing from the filename.

Account for PDS3 and changing standards
PDS4 is the current standard. NASA PDS lists version 1.26.0.0 as current, released in June 2026; standards versions can change, so check the current-version page when validating data or building software against a particular release. Because both PDS3 and PDS4 tools are available, use the product’s label and documentation to select the compatible workflow rather than assuming that a newer standard means all archived data use it.

NASA PDS says its archived data and tools are available without cost, and that reasonable user assistance is available. Its help page provides a starting point if you cannot locate a product or make sense of its documentation.
