If your seed phrase may have been exposed, treat every wallet derived from it as compromised. On a clean, trusted device, create a new wallet that generates a new phrase, then transfer each movable asset to an address in that wallet. Do not import the exposed phrase into the replacement wallet. Anyone holding it may have the same authority to sign transactions, so there is no guaranteed safe window or assurance you can move funds first.
What to do first
- Stop using the exposed phrase. Do not re-enter it to test the wallet, share it with anyone claiming to be support, or use it to set up the replacement wallet. Stop interacting with suspicious sites, apps, and devices.
- Choose a clean device. If the original device may have malware or remote-access software, use a different device you trust. Create a new wallet that generates a new recovery phrase; choose the option to create a wallet, not to import or restore one.
- Back up the new phrase offline. Write it down in the correct order and keep it somewhere only you control. Never store or send it in a message, email, screenshot, or website form.
- Start moving assets. Transfer assets individually, checking the destination address, asset, network, amount, and fee before confirming each transaction.
This is a self-custody emergency. A wallet provider generally cannot rotate or make private the old phrase, freeze the wallet, or reverse a confirmed on-chain transfer. Kraken’s guidance for compromised seed-phrase wallets likewise says to create a new wallet, move remaining assets, and stop using the compromised phrase: Kraken Support: My Kraken Wallet has been compromised. Coinbase also advises transferring funds to a secure address and creating a new wallet when a recovery phrase is compromised: Coinbase Help: Secure your wallet.

How to transfer each asset safely
- In the new wallet, open the asset and select Receive. Confirm that the displayed asset and network match what you intend to send, then copy the complete receiving address.
- In the old wallet, select the same asset and network. Paste the new wallet’s address. Check the entire address against the one displayed by the new wallet; do not rely only on a shortened preview or a previous saved address.
- Review the transaction before sending. Verify the recipient, amount, network, and fee. A mismatched network or incorrect address can make funds inaccessible, and confirmed transfers are generally irreversible.
- Confirm completion. Check the transaction status and the replacement wallet’s balance before moving to the next asset. Repeat separately for assets on other networks.
Addresses and network names can look similar across chains, but a receiving address is not a universal destination for every asset. Follow the wallet’s current instructions for the particular asset and chain, and do not send a token to an address unless the new wallet supports that asset on that network. Many tokens require the network’s native coin to pay transaction fees. The old wallet may therefore need some native coin before it can send its tokens. But if an automated thief is monitoring the exposed wallet, fee funds sent there may be taken as soon as they arrive. Adding funds repeatedly or retrying without considering this risk can increase losses; it does not guarantee you will win the race against another person with the same signing authority.

Prioritize transfers based on asset value, network fee needs, and whether the asset can move now. The right order depends on the chain and wallet, and no source can promise a transfer window. If you cannot safely fund a required fee or are unsure which network to use, pause rather than guess; consult the wallet or network’s official support guidance without sharing your phrase.
Check assets that are staked, locked, or held by a contract
Not every balance can be transferred immediately. Staked or locked assets may require an unstaking period, a withdrawal transaction, or additional steps defined by the protocol. Contract-held positions may have their own withdrawal conditions. Check the relevant wallet and protocol instructions, and monitor the exposed wallet until any recoverable assets have reached the new wallet. Do not assume that a displayed balance is immediately transferable.

Phrase exposure is different from a malicious approval
A suspicious dApp approval can grant a contract permission to spend particular tokens. Revoking an approval may limit that permission, and disconnecting an unfamiliar dApp can reduce unwanted access. But revocation does not protect a wallet whose phrase is exposed: the phrase holder can still sign transactions directly. If you suspect both problems, secure and move assets to the new wallet first where feasible, then review approvals and connected dApps. After the transfers
- Stop receiving funds at addresses derived from the exposed phrase. Update saved withdrawal addresses, contacts, and any services that still point to the old wallet.
- Remove the old wallet from connected services where possible, but do not mistake disconnecting it for securing the phrase.
- Preserve transaction IDs or hashes, wallet addresses, dates, amounts, screenshots, and communications related to the exposure or any theft. These details can help with a report.
- If funds were sent to a centralized exchange, contact that exchange promptly and provide the transaction details. It may be able to review or flag an account, but a freeze is not guaranteed.
- Be wary of anyone promising to recover crypto for an upfront fee. Recovery promises can be a second scam.

Optional: use a hardware wallet for the new wallet
A hardware wallet can keep the replacement wallet’s private keys offline, but it does not make the exposed phrase safe and should not delay a needed transfer while you wait to buy or set up one. The essential step is generating a genuinely new phrase on a device you trust and moving assets to addresses controlled by it.
