How to Open and Edit KiCad PCB Files for Steam Frame Accessories

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open a Steam Frame accessory board in KiCad’s PCB Editor by loading its native .kicad_pcb file, or by opening the supplied .kicad_pro project in KiCad Manager and launching PCB Editor. Keep the schematic, footprints and design-rule files beside the board. If a schematic is included, run Tools → Update PCB from Schematic… (F8) before changing placement or routing. After editing, refill copper zones, run Design Rules Checker, inspect the electrical and mechanical interfaces, and export Gerbers or another fabrication format only when the design passes review.

This workflow applies to Valve’s reported Steam Frame accessory package, which includes mechanical CAD and electrical-interface material plus a minimal KiCad USB hub example. File names and revisions can change, so verify the current Valve-hosted package, its readme and its license before using any particular design.

Which KiCad file should you open?

The native KiCad printed-circuit-board format is .kicad_pcb. KiCad’s board-format documentation identifies the kicad_pcb token as a board file, and the PCB Editor manual describes the file as containing the board layout, footprints, tracks, vias, zones and related board data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A file ending in .brd is a legacy KiCad 4.x-and-earlier board. Current KiCad releases can read that format, but the current editor does not write it back. Open the legacy board and save a converted copy as .kicad_pcb rather than overwriting the original.

File or folder Purpose How to treat it
.kicad_pcb Native board layout Open in PCB Editor; save edits in this format.
.brd Legacy KiCad board Readable by current KiCad, but not writable; save a converted copy.
.kicad_sch KiCad schematic Keep with the board and use it to update footprints and net connections.
.kicad_pro KiCad project settings and references Open this in KiCad Manager when supplied.
.pretty and .kicad_mod Footprint libraries and footprint definitions Preserve their relative paths; missing libraries can make a board appear incomplete.
.kicad_dru Custom design rules Keep it with the project and check that the rules are loaded in Board Setup.

The board can embed some footprint and rule information, but a complete project provides the intended schematic context, library references and manufacturing constraints. Do not copy only the board file if the download includes the rest of the project.

Prepare the Steam Frame project before opening it

Install a current KiCad release

Install a current KiCad release for your operating system. KiCad’s PCB Editor is distributed for Linux, Apple macOS and Windows, and its project files are cross-platform. Use the same major KiCad version across a team when possible; opening and resaving a project in a newer release can update file syntax and settings.

Make a working copy

  1. Duplicate the downloaded project directory, including all subfolders and hidden files.
  2. Give the copy a clear name such as steam-frame-hub-working and leave the original untouched.
  3. Do not flatten the directory or rename library folders until the board opens successfully.

A working copy lets you compare changes, recover the supplied design and test conversion from a legacy .brd file without losing the source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the package contents

Look for a .kicad_pro project, a matching .kicad_sch schematic, one or more .kicad_pcb boards, footprint libraries and a custom rules file. Read any included README or license before modifying or redistributing the files. Mechanical CAD may be in a separate folder, so note the coordinate units and reference geometry supplied for the accessory.

Open the board in KiCad

Open the complete project

  1. Start KiCad Manager.
  2. Choose File → Open Existing Project (the exact wording can vary slightly by KiCad release) and select the supplied .kicad_pro file.
  3. From the project window, launch PCB Editor. The board associated with the project opens with its configured libraries and rules.

Opening the project is preferable when a schematic or custom footprint path is supplied because KiCad can resolve the project’s relative references.

Open a board directly

  1. Launch PCB Editor from the KiCad application menu, or double-click the .kicad_pcb file in the file manager.
  2. If KiCad asks whether to create or associate a project, choose the working-copy directory and keep the board in that directory.
  3. Use File → Save As if you need to convert a legacy board or create a separate experiment.

Direct opening is useful when you received only a board file. If footprints, rules or a schematic are missing, stop and locate the complete package before making substantial edits.

Inspect the unmodified layout first

Before moving anything, record how the supplied board is intended to work. In PCB Editor, inspect the layer stack and confirm that the board outline is drawn on Edge.Cuts. Check connector locations, mounting holes, keep-out areas, component courtyards, reference designators and the orientation of every interface that must mate with the Steam Frame.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Turn layers on and off in the Appearance panel to identify copper, silkscreen, mask, fabrication and mechanical information.
  • Zoom into USB or expansion connectors and note pin numbering, polarity marks and the direction in which a cable or module enters.
  • Look for unfilled zones, ratsnest lines and deliberately unused pads before assuming the board is broken.
  • Open the 3D Viewer to compare the board outline, connector height and mounting-hole positions with the mechanical CAD reference.

Save a screenshot or a copy of the original board if you need a visual change record. Do not begin routing until you understand which nets and mechanical surfaces are fixed by the accessory enclosure.

Synchronize the schematic and board

When a .kicad_sch file is present, KiCad’s recommended workflow is to transfer footprints and net connections from the schematic to the PCB. In PCB Editor, choose Tools → Update PCB from Schematic… or press F8.

  1. Review the proposed changes in the update dialog rather than accepting every item blindly.
  2. Confirm that each schematic symbol maps to the intended footprint and that reference designators are consistent.
  3. Apply the update, then place any newly added footprints in the board area before routing.
  4. Save the board and schematic together, and repeat the update after later schematic changes.

Run this synchronization before layout edits when starting from the supplied design. If you have already moved or routed a board, make a backup first: an update can add, delete or reassign items and may require you to resolve footprint-placement changes. A board-only modification can remain valid, but it will no longer represent the schematic unless you document the difference.

Edit the board in PCB Editor

Placement and mechanical clearances

Select a footprint and use the move and rotate commands to adjust placement. Keep connectors, mounting holes and enclosure-contact surfaces at their reference coordinates unless the mechanical design is changing too. Check courtyard boundaries and the keep-out regions around fasteners, flex cables and the Steam Frame interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the grid and alignment tools for repeatable placement. Lock items that must not move, such as a connector whose location is defined by the mechanical CAD. After each significant change, inspect both the 2D layout and the 3D model; a footprint can look electrically correct while its body or connector shell collides with the enclosure.

Tracks, vias and net assignments

Route only on the nets assigned by the schematic or by the original board. When starting a track, KiCad displays the active net; confirm it before placing the first segment. Use vias and layer changes only where the stackup and fabrication rules allow them. Do not repair a ratsnest by drawing an apparently convenient track to the wrong pad: an incorrect net assignment can pass a visual inspection and still make the accessory inoperable.

Review differential or high-speed connections according to the rules supplied with the design. The available Steam Frame material does not establish a universal trace width, impedance target or power budget for every accessory, so use the current Valve electrical documentation and your manufacturer’s capabilities rather than copying a value from an unrelated board.

Copper zones

Zones may appear hatched until KiCad fills them. After moving components or changing tracks, choose Edit → Fill All Zones or press B. Inspect thermal reliefs, clearances and isolated islands. A zone that does not fill can indicate a missing net, an invalid boundary, a rule conflict or an unclosed board outline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Text and graphics

Edit reference designators, polarity marks and user text on the correct layer. Keep safety, orientation and connector labels legible at the intended assembly angle. Avoid placing silkscreen over pads, solder-mask openings or mechanical edges. If the original package includes fabrication or assembly graphics, preserve them unless you know the manufacturer does not need them.

Footprint-specific changes

For a one-off change, edit the footprint on the board rather than silently changing a shared library footprint used by other projects. Use Footprint Editor when you need a reusable library revision; import or export the footprint deliberately and give the revision a clear name. Verify pad numbers, pad types, solder-mask openings, courtyard and 3D model alignment after editing.

Import a board supplied in another EDA format

KiCad can import boards from Altium Designer, Altium CircuitMaker or Altium Studio, Cadence Allegro, CADSTAR, Eagle, PADS and Solidworks PCB. Import creates a new KiCad board; it does not merge the foreign design into an existing board.

  1. Choose the appropriate import command from KiCad’s project or PCB Editor menus and select the foreign board.
  2. Resolve library and layer-mapping prompts, recording any unmapped layers or footprints.
  3. Save the imported result as a new .kicad_pcb in your working-copy directory.
  4. Open Board Setup and rebuild or confirm the stackup, net classes, clearances and custom rules.
  5. Inspect every critical footprint and run the validation steps below before treating the import as fabrication-ready.

Foreign formats do not always map every rule, polygon behavior or footprint attribute exactly. An import that looks correct can still have missing net assignments, altered clearances or incorrect courtyard data, so treat the first save as a conversion—not as proof of electrical equivalence.

What the Steam Frame accessory files represent

Contemporary reporting about Valve’s Steam Frame hardware-file release describes a package containing accessory CAD and electrical-interface information, mechanical files for the core module, headstrap and controllers, a minimal USB hub example made in KiCad, and an Altium USB 3.0 hub example. The exact filenames and revisions are not permanent; verify the current Valve-hosted package before building instructions around one.

The KiCad USB hub example is a reference design, not evidence that every home-made board is official, certified or guaranteed to fit. Use the mechanical reference to check enclosure interfaces and use the current electrical documentation to confirm the expansion-port pinout, signal requirements and power limits for your intended accessory.

License and redistribution checks

A secondary guide reports that Valve described the Steam Frame CAD and electrical-interface files as available for non-commercial use, while commercial projects should follow Valve’s instructions and contact process. Treat the license and readme shipped with the current files as authoritative. Before publishing, selling or redistributing a modified board, verify that your use, included models and generated files are permitted.

  • Keep the original license and attribution files with your working copy.
  • Record which revision you modified and which changes you made.
  • Do not describe a homemade board as Valve-approved, official or certified without written authorization.
  • For commercial work, follow the current contact and permission procedure stated by Valve rather than relying on an older summary.

Validate every modification before ordering a PCB

Run Design Rules Checker

Open the Design Rules Checker in PCB Editor and run a complete scan. Resolve violations that apply to the design, including copper clearances, minimum track width, unconnected nets, courtyard overlaps and custom-rule errors. Read the individual rule and the involved objects before choosing an exclusion; an ignored warning can conceal a real assembly or safety problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review Board Setup and net classes

In Board Setup, confirm the layer stack, copper thickness assumptions, pre-defined sizes, net classes, clearance rules and any loaded .kicad_dru custom rules. Compare those settings with the capabilities and requirements of the manufacturer you plan to use. If a net has no explicit class, inspect the default class instead of assuming it inherits the intended width or clearance.

Check connectivity and zones

  1. Use the ratsnest display to find remaining unconnected pads.
  2. Inspect net names and pad numbers at every connector and test point.
  3. Fill all zones with Edit → Fill All Zones (B).
  4. Look for isolated copper, unexpected thermal connections and clearances that changed after the refill.
  5. Run the Design Rules Checker again after the final refill.

Inspect the physical result

Use 2D and 3D views to verify the Edge.Cuts outline, mounting-hole diameter and locations, connector orientation, component height and keep-outs. Compare the board with the Steam Frame mechanical reference and the actual enclosure or test fixture. A KiCad rules pass does not prove that a connector reaches through an opening, that a screw clears a component or that a cable can bend without strain.

Confirm the electrical interface

Check the expansion-port pinout and power limits against the current Valve documentation. Confirm polarity, grounding, USB data orientation, protection components and any required pull-ups or termination parts in the schematic. The available reference material does not provide a finished accessory safety or fit test; those final electrical, thermal and mechanical checks remain the designer’s responsibility.

Export files for fabrication only after review

Fabrication is downstream of opening and editing. Once the board passes schematic synchronization, rule checking, connectivity review and mechanical inspection, use KiCad’s export functions to create the formats requested by your manufacturer. PCB Editor supports Gerber, IPC-2581, ODB++, GenCAD, PDF, SVG and other outputs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the board revision and manufacturing notes in the project.
  2. Open the plot or fabrication-output dialog and select the copper, solder-mask, silkscreen, paste and fabrication layers required by the manufacturer.
  3. Generate drill files and any required board-stackup or pick-and-place data.
  4. Open the generated files in a separate viewer or the manufacturer’s preview tool and check layer polarity, drill alignment, outline and text.
  5. Send the complete output set, not just one Gerber layer, and retain the exact .kicad_pcb, schematic and rules used to create it.

Do not order from an unfilled, unchecked or partially exported board. A manufacturer can fabricate the files you send, but cannot infer a missing net, a reversed connector or an enclosure conflict from the KiCad project.

Common problems and practical fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
The board opens with missing footprints or library warnings. The project was flattened, moved or opened without its .pretty libraries. Restore the original directory structure, open the .kicad_pro project and repair the project’s footprint-library paths before editing.
A legacy board opens but cannot be saved in its old format. It is a KiCad 4.x .brd file. Use Save As to create a native .kicad_pcb copy and keep the legacy file unchanged.
F8 proposes many unexpected changes. The schematic and board were edited independently or reference designators changed. Stop, back up both files, review each proposed update and resolve symbol-to-footprint mappings before applying it.
Large copper areas remain hatched. Zones have not been refilled, or the outline, net or clearance rules prevent a fill. Press B, then inspect the zone boundary, assigned net, Edge.Cuts closure and rule violations.
Design Rules Checker reports unconnected nets after routing. A pad was skipped, a track is on the wrong net or a zone connection is absent. Highlight the reported net, inspect pad numbers and routing, correct the connection and rerun the checker.
The 2D board passes but the accessory will not fit. Connector height, mounting geometry or keep-outs were not compared with the mechanical reference. Check the 3D view and enclosure dimensions, then revise placement or the mechanical model before exporting.

A repeatable workflow

  1. Copy the complete Steam Frame project and read its license and README.
  2. Open the .kicad_pro project when available; otherwise open the .kicad_pcb directly.
  3. Identify the board outline, stackup, connectors, holes, keep-outs and existing rules.
  4. Run Tools → Update PCB from Schematic… (F8) if a schematic is supplied.
  5. Make placement, routing, zone, text or footprint edits in PCB Editor while preserving the intended nets and mechanical interfaces.
  6. Review Board Setup, custom rules, footprints, net classes and zone behavior.
  7. Refill zones, run Design Rules Checker, inspect 2D and 3D views, and verify the Valve interface documentation.
  8. Export the manufacturer’s requested fabrication files only after the final review, and archive the exact project revision used.

This sequence keeps the native board, schematic, rules and mechanical references aligned while leaving fabrication as an optional final step.
