“Opening and utilizing your graphics card” can mean opening AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition to manage a Radeon GPU, or opening your PC case to install or inspect the card. This guide covers both at a safe, practical level: software setup for compatible Radeon graphics on supported Windows versions, plus where to find model-specific hardware installation guidance. It does not provide instructions for dismantling a GPU cooler or circuit board.
What you need before you begin
AMD’s installation guide lists compatible Radeon graphics on Windows 11 version 21H2 or later, or Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 or later. AMD notes that requirements can change, so check the current support page for your card and software release before installing. These requirements do not establish support for every Radeon card in every Windows environment. AMD’s Adrenalin installation instructions use Adrenalin 26.1.1 and an RX 9070 as examples and warn that options can vary by system.

- Identify the exact graphics card model and your Windows version.
- If the Radeon GPU came in a prebuilt PC or laptop, check the computer maker’s support guidance as well as AMD’s; the system maker may provide a specific driver path.
- Decide whether you want AMD’s software interface and its controls, or only the graphics driver.
How to install AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition
- Go to AMD’s Adrenalin installation guide. Use AMD’s Auto-Detect and Install tool, or select your product manually through AMD’s product selector to find the appropriate package.
- Download the package, close open applications, and launch the installer. AMD recommends closing applications to help avoid potential conflicts. Let the installer check compatibility before proceeding.
- Choose the software type that matches how you plan to use the GPU:
- Default: AMD’s full listed feature set, including gaming, recording, streaming, and performance controls.
- Minimal: Basic controls without advanced tuning or recording and capture controls.
- Driver Only: The driver without AMD’s software feature interface.
Not every option is necessarily available on every system.
- Follow the installer’s prompts to finish setup. Once installed, open AMD Software from Windows and review the available sections for your system.
How to check your graphics card and driver in AMD Software
To confirm what is installed, open AMD Software and go to its System settings to view graphics hardware and driver details. AMD’s instructions on this workflow were updated June 17, 2025 and illustrate an older software version, so labels or screen layouts may differ in a newer release. AMD’s graphics-information and update instructions provide the documented route.
To check for a driver update, use the software’s update manager and review the linked release notes to see what changed and whether the release applies to your setup. An update being available does not by itself mean you need to install it immediately; consider the release notes and any guidance from your PC maker.

What you can do with Adrenalin
Depending on your card and installation type, AMD Software can provide tools for display configuration, graphics settings, performance tuning, capture and streaming, profiles, and metrics. AMD cautions in its Software Help Center that “Your product may not have some of the features covered in these articles.” Check the help topic for the feature you want and confirm that your exact model supports it before relying on it.
- Display: Review available display configuration options for connected screens.
- Gaming: Adjust supported graphics settings and profiles.
- Performance and metrics: Use the controls and monitoring features exposed for your product; do not assume every card supports every tuning option.
- Capture and streaming: These features depend on the software type and product support.
If “opening” means installing or inspecting the physical card
For a new card, follow the quick-start guide for its exact model, along with the documentation for your PC case and motherboard. AMD’s Radeon RX 7800 XT Quick Start Guide, released December 12, 2023, is an example of model-specific setup documentation—not a universal guide for other Radeon cards. AMD’s support page can help you find product resources.

Do not treat installing a card in the PC as the same task as opening the GPU itself. The sources cited here do not establish a safe, model-independent procedure for removing a card’s shroud, heatsink, or circuit board, or settle warranty effects and serviceability. If you mean internal disassembly, consult the card’s board partner or a qualified repair service rather than applying another model’s instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoosing the right installation type
| Installation type | Best fit | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Default | You want the full listed AMD Software controls. | Gaming, recording, streaming, and performance controls. |
| Minimal | You want basic controls without advanced tuning or capture tools. | Basic controls; advanced tuning and recording/capture controls are omitted. |
| Driver Only | You need the driver but do not want AMD’s feature interface. | Driver installation without the AMD software feature UI. |
These descriptions follow AMD’s installation guide; the choices shown can depend on the system. They are software setup options, not a comparison of Radeon card models. To choose a GPU for a particular workload, you would need to compare specific candidate cards against your budget, PC configuration, and intended use.
