For the Windows system volume, type Y when prompted to schedule the check, then restart the computer and let CHKDSK finish.
Schedule CHKDSK to run at restart

Open an elevated Command Prompt if the operation requires administrator rights, then run the CHKDSK command for the drive you want to check. For example, to repair file-system errors on the system drive, use

If Windows displays “Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)”, enter

Restart the computer. If the target is the boot partition, Windows automatically restarts after CHKDSK checks it. Let the check complete before using the computer.

Choose the CHKDSK option for your goal

These options are documented in Microsoft’s CHKDSK reference. Check the syntax supported by your Windows version before using options such as /scan, /forceofflinefix, or /spotfix.

Why the volume-in-use message appears
To correct errors with /f, CHKDSK needs to lock the volume. Windows and running programs may have files or other open handles on it, preventing that lock. The system volume is especially likely to be in use while Windows is running, so scheduling its check for restart lets CHKDSK run when the volume is not being used in the same way.

The message describes an access or locking condition. It does not, by itself, establish that the drive has a physical fault. Use /r only if you want CHKDSK to check for physical disk errors and attempt recovery from affected sectors; the lock prompt alone is not a reason to conclude that the drive is failing.

If CHKDSK still does not run after you schedule it
If you entered Y but the check did not run after a restart, the volume-in-use prompt does not explain that separate problem. To narrow it down, record the exact command, the full console response—including whether Windows confirmed the check was scheduled—the Windows version, and whether the computer restarted normally. Avoid registry edits or boot-configuration changes based solely on the original lock message.
