This works only if the JAR is packaged as a launchable application with a startup class declared in its manifest. If you only want to see what is inside, inspect it as an archive instead; extracting it will not make a non-launchable JAR runnable.
Run a JAR file from the command line
Oracle’s Java SE 21 launcher syntax for an application packaged in a JAR is java [options] -jar jarfile [args ...]. The JAR’s manifest must contain a Main-Class header naming its startup class. Any arguments placed after the JAR filename are passed to the application’s main() method. See Oracle’s Java launcher documentation.

- Install Java. Use an official installation route for your operating system. Microsoft documents Windows EXE and ZIP installers, macOS PKG and TAR.GZ installers, and Linux DEB and RPM packages, among other options, in its Microsoft Build of OpenJDK installation guide.
- Open a command-line app. On Windows, use Command Prompt or PowerShell. On macOS or Linux, open Terminal.
- Check that Java is available. Enter
java -version. If a version is displayed, the Java launcher is available from that command prompt. Oracle documents the launcher’s--versionoption; the command here is a practical availability check. - Launch the file. Enter
java -jar, followed by the actual path and filename. For example:java -jar /path/to/file.jar. If the path includes spaces, put it in quotation marks:java -jar "/path/to/My App.jar".
Replace the example path with the location of your downloaded file. You can often avoid typing the full path by entering java -jar and then dragging the JAR into the command window, if your operating system supports that behavior.

What opening a JAR can mean
Run it as an application
Use java -jar when you want to start the program. The manifest’s Main-Class entry is the startup point the launcher needs. A JAR can be a valid Java archive without being a self-launching application.

Inspect its contents
If your goal is to view or extract files inside the JAR, use an archive viewer that supports the format. Inspection is different from running the program: extracting the archive does not supply a missing startup class or replace Java.
Platform-specific notes
Windows
The command-line method works on Windows when Java is installed and available. Some Windows Java installers offer a FeatureJarFileRunWith option to associate .jar files with Java applications, according to Microsoft’s installation guide. That association is not guaranteed on every PC.

Oracle also documents javaw, a Windows launcher that behaves like java but does not open an associated console window; it displays a dialog if launch fails. The standard java -jar command is generally more useful for troubleshooting because it shows command-line output.
macOS
Microsoft’s OpenJDK guide describes macOS installation options including PKG and TAR.GZ packages. Use Terminal and the shared command-line steps to launch a JAR. Double-click behavior depends on local file associations; it is not a universal way to open every JAR.

Linux
Microsoft documents Linux installation routes including DEB and RPM packages, as well as distribution-specific instructions. Once the Java launcher is available, use java -jar /path/to/file.jar. Whether a desktop environment opens a JAR on double-click depends on its file associations.
Phones and tablets
The installation guidance cited here covers desktop operating systems, not a universal on-device JAR launcher. Check the app publisher’s supported platforms for your specific device rather than assuming a JAR can run natively on a phone or tablet.

Why a JAR file may not open
“java” is not recognized or the command is not found
Java may not be installed, or its launcher may not be on your PATH. Microsoft says its native Windows and macOS installers make JDK tools available in PATH; archive-based installations require environment setup. Consult the Microsoft installation instructions for your installation type.

The JAR may be a library or archive rather than a launchable application. The documented -jar command requires a manifest startup-class entry. Ask the distributor for the intended launch instructions or a separate application launcher.

Double-clicking does nothing or opens an archive viewer
Double-clicking depends on the operating system’s file association. Try the command-line method: it can reveal whether Java is available and whether the JAR has a launch entry point. Opening the file in an archive viewer only exposes its contents.
The application reports a Java version or compatibility error
The required Java version depends on the particular application and is not established by the launcher command. Check that application’s official instructions instead of guessing which version it needs.
The operating system shows a security warning
Before running downloaded code, verify its source and integrity with the publisher. Do not dismiss or bypass a warning unless you have confirmed the file and followed guidance for your operating system.
