To open an existing website chat widget from your own button, attach a click handler to a semantic <button> and call the API for the widget you installed. For Zendesk Messaging, the command is zE('messenger', 'open'). For Web Widget (Classic), it is zE('webWidget', 'open'). These namespaces are different, so identify the widget generation before copying code.
The example below assumes the vendor’s widget snippet is already installed, the account has the widget enabled, and the snippet has loaded before the visitor clicks. A button can control an existing widget; it does not create the hosted chat service by itself.

The shortest working example
Use a real button rather than a clickable, unlabelled element. It has native keyboard behavior, focus handling, and button semantics.
<button id='help-button' type='button'>Chat with us</button>
<script>
document.getElementById('help-button').addEventListener('click', function () {
zE('messenger', 'open');
});
</script>
This calls the Zendesk Messaging Web Widget API when the visitor activates the button. Zendesk describes the open action as opening the messaging Web Widget. If your site uses Web Widget (Classic), replace the command with zE('webWidget', 'open'); do not mix the two command namespaces.

Zendesk Developer Docs’ custom-launcher tutorial calls the launcher “the UI element the customer clicks to open the widget.” Your custom button is that launcher, while the vendor script remains responsible for rendering the conversation interface.
Identify the widget before writing code
Zendesk has two generations with similar branding but separate APIs. Intercom has its own custom-launcher configuration. Use the comparison below to select the correct integration path.
| Choice | Command or setup | Best fit | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vendor’s default launcher | No custom click handler | A site that accepts the provider’s standard placement and appearance | You give up control over where your page button appears and how it is styled |
| Zendesk Messaging custom button | zE('messenger', 'open') |
An installed Zendesk Messaging Web Widget that should open from a page control | If the widget was hidden, call show before open |
| Zendesk Classic custom button | zE('webWidget', 'open'); use show then open when hidden |
An installed Web Widget (Classic) | Classic and Messaging commands are not interchangeable |
| Intercom custom launcher | Configure a selected element ID or class in the Intercom account | An Intercom Messenger that should open from an existing site element | Follow the current account-specific setup because exact controls depend on the installed product and configuration |
The Zendesk API references and quickstart, checked October 4, 2026, explicitly distinguish Messaging from Classic. If you are unsure which one is installed, check the widget setup in your provider’s admin area and inspect the snippet or integration instructions before changing your page code.

1. Confirm the hosted widget is enabled
A click handler cannot open a widget that is not enabled for the account or whose vendor snippet is missing from the page. Load the provider’s official installation snippet on the pages where the button appears. Keep the snippet supplied by the vendor intact; the button code only invokes its public API.
2. Add an identifiable, accessible button
<button id='help-button' type='button'>Chat with us</button>
type='button' prevents the control from acting as a form submit button when it sits inside a form. Give the button visible text that describes the result, such as “Chat with support” or “Open customer help.” For an icon-only control, provide an accessible name with visible text, an aria-label, or an equivalent label mechanism, and keep the focus indicator visible.
3. Attach the click handler
document.getElementById('help-button').addEventListener('click', function () {
zE('messenger', 'open');
});
Place this code after the button exists in the document, or run it from your site’s normal DOM-ready lifecycle. The call is intentionally inside the user’s click action. Do not call it immediately during page load if your goal is to wait for a visitor’s request.
4. Test the complete interaction
- Load the page in a fresh browser session.
- Move to the control with the keyboard and activate it with Enter or Space.
- Verify that the Messaging widget opens rather than merely displaying its launcher.
- Close the widget, activate the button again, and confirm it opens consistently.
- Check the same flow at each responsive breakpoint where the button is displayed.
Zendesk Messaging: opening, showing, and closing
Messaging separates visibility from open state. The widget is normally shown on page load. The open action opens the conversation interface, while close closes it. The show action displays a widget that was previously hidden, restoring its previous state; it is not a replacement for open.

If another part of your site hides the widget, use both calls in the button handler:
document.getElementById('help-button').addEventListener('click', function () {
zE('messenger', 'show');
zE('messenger', 'open');
});
Calling show when the widget is already visible is harmless for this purpose, but the exact visibility behavior belongs to the current Zendesk Messaging API. Keep the two actions conceptually separate: one makes the widget available, and the other opens its interface.
Zendesk Web Widget (Classic): use its separate API
Classic uses the webWidget namespace. The direct open call is:
zE('webWidget', 'open');
Classic also provides show, hide, and toggle. toggle opens a closed widget or closes an open one, which can be useful for a button whose label and purpose are explicitly “open or close chat.” For a button that should always open chat, use open so a second click does not unexpectedly close it.

Zendesk’s Classic custom-launcher quickstart hides the provider’s default launcher and then calls show followed by open from the custom launcher action. A production version using a semantic button can look like this:
<button id='classic-help-button' type='button'>Chat with support</button>
<script>
document.getElementById('classic-help-button').addEventListener('click', function () {
zE('webWidget', 'show');
zE('webWidget', 'open');
});
</script>
Use the two-call version when your page deliberately hides the Classic widget or its launcher. If you have not hidden it, zE('webWidget', 'open') is the essential action.
Intercom: configure a custom launcher element
Intercom documents a different approach: designate an element ID or class as a custom launcher in the active Messenger configuration. The visitor then opens Messenger by clicking that configured element. Add a stable identifier to the control, for example:

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDefault launcher or custom button?
The default launcher is the simplest option because the provider owns its placement, styling, and click behavior. Choose it when you do not need a separate call-to-action in your navigation, pricing page, checkout help area, or account portal.
A custom button is useful when the action belongs in your page’s content or design system. It lets you use your own label, position, spacing, and responsive layout while still opening the hosted widget. It also gives you a place to add surrounding explanatory text, such as response hours or the subjects your support team handles.
Do not hide the default launcher merely to duplicate it without a reason. If you remove the only visible launcher, make sure the replacement button is present on every relevant viewport and remains reachable by keyboard and assistive technology.
Loading and application-lifecycle considerations
Make sure the vendor API exists before the click
The supplied vendor snippet may load asynchronously. If a visitor clicks before the provider has initialized, a direct call can fail or do nothing. The cited Zendesk documentation explains the commands and snippet placement but does not establish one universal readiness callback that works for every vendor, framework, or loading strategy.
Use the loading and readiness guidance for your installed product. In a single-page application, also verify that the button’s event listener is attached after each route renders and that navigation does not remove the element while a click is in progress. Avoid inventing a generic timeout as a readiness solution: network timing varies and a timeout can still race the widget initialization.
Keep one integration source of truth
Install the vendor snippet once according to the provider’s instructions. Multiple copies can produce duplicate launchers, conflicting state, or calls directed at different instances. If a tag manager injects the snippet, document which tag owns it and test a hard refresh as well as an in-app route change.

Accessibility requirements for a custom launcher
- Use a button for an action. A native
<button>supports keyboard activation and communicates its role without extra scripting. - Write a meaningful label. “Chat with support” tells users what will happen; “Click here” does not.
- Label icon-only controls. Supply an accessible name and do not rely on a tooltip alone.
- Preserve visible focus. Keyboard users should be able to see which control will open chat.
- Do not fake a link. Avoid
href='#'for a JavaScript-only action. If the control is a link because it leads to a support destination when JavaScript is unavailable, give it a meaningful destination and handle the enhanced behavior carefully. - Check the opened conversation. The widget should be reachable and dismissible with keyboard input, and focus should not become trapped behind an overlay.
- Keep contrast and text clear. Zendesk’s settings documentation discusses launcher labels and minimum contrast behavior; your custom button still needs to meet your site’s accessibility standard.
Common failures and precise fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens when the button is clicked | The widget snippet is absent, disabled, or not initialized | Confirm the provider script is present on that page, the account has the widget enabled, and the click occurs after initialization. |
The browser reports that zE is undefined |
The Zendesk script has not loaded or the button code runs against a page without the snippet | Correct the snippet placement and follow the vendor’s loading guidance before invoking the API. |
| The command runs but the wrong widget responds | Messaging and Classic namespaces were mixed | Use zE('messenger', ...) only for Messaging and zE('webWidget', ...) for Classic. |
| The launcher appears, but the conversation panel does not | The code changed visibility without changing open state | Call open; if the widget was hidden, call show first and then open. |
| A second click closes chat | The handler uses Classic toggle |
Use open for an “always open” action, or relabel the control so users understand that it toggles. |
| The button submits a form | The button lacks an explicit type | Set type='button'. |
| Keyboard users cannot activate the control | A clickable div or custom element lacks native button behavior |
Replace it with <button>, or implement complete keyboard and focus behavior if a component constraint makes that impossible. |
| It works after a full reload but not after client-side navigation | The route replaced the button or the listener was attached only during the first render | Attach the handler in the route’s component lifecycle and confirm the vendor widget remains available across navigation. |
Opening chat is not the same as starting a new conversation
An open command displays the existing widget and its current conversation state. It does not necessarily create a blank thread. Zendesk Messaging exposes a separate UI API for creating a new conversation; use that only when your product requirement is explicitly “start a new conversation.” Keeping these actions separate avoids surprising visitors who expect to resume an existing exchange.
A practical implementation checklist
- Identify whether the installed Zendesk product is Messaging or Classic, or whether the site uses Intercom.
- Confirm the provider snippet is installed once and the account widget is enabled.
- Place a labelled
<button type='button'>where the support action belongs. - Attach the provider-specific open action to the button’s click event.
- If your code hides the widget, restore visibility before opening it.
- Test mouse, keyboard, screen-reader naming, focus visibility, close-and-reopen behavior, and responsive layouts.
- Test a fresh page load and a client-side route change if your site is an SPA.
- Check browser errors and provider configuration before changing the command.
Which approach should you choose?
Choose the default launcher when
- You need the fastest setup and have no page-specific placement requirement.
- The provider’s standard appearance is acceptable.
- You want the provider to manage launcher state without custom JavaScript.
Choose a Zendesk Messaging button when
- Your account uses the Messaging Web Widget.
- You need a branded or context-specific “Chat with us” action in page content.
- You can ensure the Messaging script is initialized before the click.
Choose a Classic button when
- Your account still uses Web Widget (Classic).
- You need Classic’s
show,hide,open, ortogglecontrols. - You are prepared to keep the Classic namespace separate from Messaging.
Choose an Intercom custom launcher when
- Intercom Messenger is already installed.
- Your team wants to designate an existing element by ID or class.
- You can apply the current launcher settings in the Intercom account rather than adding an unrelated provider API.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use one Zendesk command for every widget?
No. Messaging uses zE('messenger', 'open'), while Web Widget (Classic) uses zE('webWidget', 'open'). The product generation determines the namespace.
Why does a hidden widget need two calls?
Visibility and open state are independent. show makes a hidden widget available again; open displays its interface.
Should the launcher be a link or a button?
Use a button when the action opens an on-page widget. Use a link only when it has a meaningful support destination that should remain useful if JavaScript is unavailable.
Can I call the API from a framework component?
Yes, provided the component attaches its event after rendering and the vendor API has initialized. The exact lifecycle code depends on your framework; the vendor references do not define one framework-neutral recipe.
How do I make an icon-only launcher accessible?
Give it an accessible name, preserve visible keyboard focus, and test that the opened widget can be reached and closed without a mouse.

Opening the widget is not the same action as creating a new conversation. Use the provider’s separate new-conversation API only when that behavior is intentional.
