To move your complete Windows installation—including installed applications, system partitions, and files—to a replacement drive, use a cloning utility that supports both drives. Back up important files separately first, then boot from the new drive and verify it before erasing or reusing the old one. Copying files in File Explorer moves personal files, but it does not make a bootable Windows replacement.
Choose the right method for what you want to move
A full-disk clone is for replacing a Windows boot drive while keeping the existing installation. A file transfer is for moving personal documents and other selected files to another PC or storage device. A Recovery Drive is for recovery tasks, not for carrying your personal files or cloning your current setup.

| Method | What it carries over | Bootable copy of current Windows? |
|---|---|---|
| Disk-cloning utility | Windows partitions and, depending on the tool and layout, other selected partitions and data | Yes, when the tool supports the configuration and the clone is installed and booted correctly |
| Copy files to external storage | Personal files you choose to copy | No |
| Windows Recovery Drive | Essential recovery system files | No; it does not include personal files |
| Windows reinstall from installation media | A fresh Windows installation | It does not preserve the existing installed setup; Microsoft warns that reinstalling this way removes everything from the device |
Microsoft explains the distinction between backups, recovery, and Recovery Drives in its Windows backup, restore, and recovery guidance. Its instructions for moving files with external storage describe file transfer, not a bootable disk clone.

Before buying or connecting a drive, check the computer’s specifications or service manual for supported form factors and interfaces. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD, M.2 SATA SSD, and M.2 NVMe SSD are not interchangeable merely because their connectors or shapes look similar. Also check the available capacity and whether there is a spare internal slot. The exact compatible drive cannot be determined without the computer model and its specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- 2.5" SATA Drives Only — SSD & HDD: Compatible with 2.5" SATA I/II/III SSDs and laptop HDDs. NOT compatible with: M.2 NVMe drives, M.2 SATA drives, 3.5" desktop HDDs, or slim SATA optical drives. Verify your drive has a standard 2.5" SATA connector before purchasing.
- USB Bus-Powered — No Adapter Needed for Most Drives: Powers most 2.5" SATA SSDs and laptop HDDs directly from USB. Note: Some older or high-capacity 2.5" mechanical HDDs may draw more current than a single USB port provides — if a drive fails to spin up, try a powered USB hub or a different USB 3.0 port.
- USB 3.0 (USB-A) — 5Gbps with UASP: Host connection is USB Type-A (USB-A). Computers with only USB-C ports require a separate USB-C to USB-A adapter (not included). UASP support for faster transfers on compatible systems.
- Plug & Play: No drivers required; hot-swappable design for quick access to drives on Windows, macOS, and Linux
- Usage Note: Not intended for all configurations such as system boot drives or certain embedded systems; compatibility may vary by device
If the computer has no second internal slot, the target may need to connect temporarily through an interface-matched USB adapter or enclosure. Confirm that the cloning software supports the target in that connection mode. Samsung’s Data Migration documentation, for example, warns that USB adapters can cause malfunction in some situations; its manual describes behavior for a specific documented software revision, so check current documentation before relying on those details. See the Samsung SSD Data Migration User Manual, revision 6.
Back up important files before cloning
Make a separate copy of irreplaceable documents, photos, and other personal files to an external drive or another independent destination. Open a few copied files to confirm they are readable. Do not treat the clone as your only backup: selecting the wrong source or target, a tool limitation, or an interrupted operation could put data at risk. Acronis recommends a full backup of the source disk before cloning in its Acronis True Image 2026 disk-cloning documentation.

- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
A Recovery Drive can be useful as a recovery fallback, but Microsoft says it does not include personal files. Keep your separate file backup even if you create recovery media.

Manufacturer migration software
Samsung’s documented Data Migration tool is intended for supported Samsung SSDs. The cited manual describes copying the OS volume and up to two additional volumes in that version, says the system-reserved partition is copied automatically, and says OEM partitions are not copied. These are version-specific details, not a guarantee for every current Samsung tool release or computer. Check the current software download and manual, including drive eligibility and partition limits, before starting.
Samsung’s Magician 8.1.0 Installation Guide also documents Data Migration support conditions and limitations for that release.

Other cloning utilities
Acronis describes cloning to an internal SSD, NVMe drive, or HDD and recommends placing the target in the location where it will be used. Its documentation says the source can be connected elsewhere, such as in a USB enclosure, but the target should be internal for normal Windows boot use. Acronis also warns that the source and target’s controller modes should match; a mismatch can prevent Windows from starting on the new drive. Its documentation describes the utility as duplicating data and making Windows bootable on the new drive.
Clone the drive without overwriting the wrong disk
- Connect the target. Install it internally if possible, or connect it using a compatible adapter or enclosure supported by the cloning tool.
- Open the cloning utility and identify both drives. Check the source and destination labels and capacities carefully. The destination is commonly overwritten during cloning, so do not proceed if the drive identities are unclear.
- Review the selected partitions and options. Confirm the tool supports the source layout and that the intended Windows and data partitions are included. Do not assume every tool copies every OEM or recovery partition.
- Start the clone and let it finish. Do not disconnect either drive or interrupt the operation. Exact screens and options vary by utility, so follow the instructions for the specific supported tool and version.
Keep the original drive unchanged after cloning. It is your fallback until the new drive has booted and you have checked your files.

Boot from the new drive and verify Windows
For regular use, install the cloned drive internally in the computer. Acronis warns that a Windows clone connected externally over USB might not boot as intended. If the computer starts from the old drive instead, use its boot-selection menu or firmware setup to select the new internal drive; the exact key and menu names depend on the computer.
- Confirm that Windows reaches the desktop from the replacement drive.
- Open important files and check that expected folders are present.
- Launch key applications to confirm they work as expected.
Do not format, erase, or repurpose the original drive until these checks are complete. If the new drive does not start, avoid changing or erasing the source; check the boot selection and controller-mode guidance for the computer and cloning utility.
If cloning is not the right option
You only need personal files
Copy the files you need to external storage, then verify them on the destination. Microsoft’s external-storage transfer instructions cover this route. It does not transfer a bootable Windows installation or installed applications.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The clone is unsupported or fails
Use recovery media or a fresh Windows installation only if you accept that these are recovery or reinstall routes, not automatic preservation of the old installed setup. Microsoft’s recovery guidance distinguishes Recovery Drives from personal-file backups, and warns that reinstalling Windows from installation media removes everything from the device. Preserve the source drive and verified file backup while deciding how to recover.
You are moving to a different PC
A drive clone is intended to duplicate a disk, but the new computer’s hardware and boot configuration may differ. The cited documentation does not establish a universal procedure for moving an existing Windows installation to a different computer; check the cloning tool’s support for that scenario and keep a separate backup. For personal files only, Microsoft’s new-PC file transfer overview describes the separate transfer route. Microsoft’s support notice on that page says Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025.
