On your Android phone in New Zealand, allow a permission when it clearly enables a feature you chose to use, limit its scope when possible, and deny it when you do not want that feature or cannot see why the app needs access. You can change permissions app by app or review all apps that have a particular permission; exact menu labels vary by Android version and phone manufacturer.
How to decide what to allow
Judge a permission by the feature, the access requested and your own choice—not by treating a category as automatically safe or dangerous. A camera app needs camera access to take a photo, for example. If a request appears unrelated to what you are doing, you can deny it and reconsider later if you choose to use a feature that needs it.

- Allow access when it directly supports a feature you intend to use and the prompt makes sense in context.
- Limit access when Android offers a narrower option, such as approximate instead of precise location, access only while using the app, or asking each time.
- Deny access if you do not want the feature or cannot connect the request to it. Some app functions may then be unavailable.
- Review access periodically, especially for apps you no longer use or after a feature unexpectedly stops working.
Available choices depend on the permission, app and device. Google describes options such as “Allow all the time” for location, “Allow while using the app,” “Ask every time,” and “Don’t allow”; camera and microphone may offer a different set. See Google’s Android app permission guidance and its explanation of location access.
Change permissions for one app
- Open Settings → Apps.
- Select the app. If it is not shown, tap See all apps or the equivalent option on your phone.
- Tap Permissions, choose a permission and select the access level you want.
For location, camera and microphone, the available settings can include narrower or temporary access. Choose the least access that still supports the feature you want. If you cannot find the app or permission, search Settings for “permissions”; the wording and search results are not identical across devices. Google documents this app-level route in its permission instructions.

Review every app with a particular permission
A permission-type view is useful when you want to check, for example, which apps have location or microphone access rather than opening apps one by one.
- Open Settings → Security & Privacy or Privacy.
- Tap Permission manager.
- Choose a permission type, then select an app to change its access.
Google notes that security and privacy options may be combined or appear in separate sections. Android 13 and later commonly use a combined “Security and privacy” section; Android 12 and earlier may show separate Security and Privacy sections. Manufacturers can also change labels or layout. If the route does not match your phone, try searching Settings for “permission manager.” See Google’s overview of Android security and privacy settings.

Use the device-wide camera and microphone switches carefully
Supported Android devices have device-level Camera access and Microphone access controls. Turning one off blocks that sensor broadly, rather than changing permission for just one app, so video calls, voice recording or other legitimate features may stop working until you turn access back on. Look in your phone’s privacy or quick settings controls; the exact location depends on the device.
Understand what Google Play’s Data safety section tells you
A Google Play listing’s Data safety section provides developer-supplied declarations about data practices. It can add context, but it is not the same as the Android permission list: permissions describe data or device features an app can access or request, while Data safety presents the developer’s disclosures. The two can differ, including because some processing happens on the device or because a data practice is not represented by a permission.

To review it, open the app’s listing in Google Play and look for Data safety; tap See details if that option is available. This information applies to apps distributed through Google Play and is not an independent technical audit. Google explains the distinction in its Data safety help page.
What happens to permissions for apps you stop using?
Android’s unused-app controls can pause app activity or remove permissions. Google also says Play Protect may reset permissions after three months of non-use on certain devices running Android 6.0–10. That three-month condition is limited to the versions and devices described in Google’s documentation; do not assume the same timing applies to every phone. If a previously working feature loses access, check the app’s permission settings and unused-app controls. See Google Play Protect’s guidance.

What New Zealand users should know
The Android and Google Play help pages describe general Android controls, not a separate New Zealand permission interface or New Zealand-specific legal requirements. The settings guide above applies to Android phones used in New Zealand, but your device’s version and manufacturer determine the exact labels and available options.
