For batch compression on Windows, FileOptimizer is a desktop option; for hands-on online controls, Ezgif offers adjustments for colors, frames, transparency and lossy compression. If you want processing to stay in your browser, Simon Willison’s Gifsicle-based web optimizer is another choice. There is no source-backed universal winner: the available comparison describes features, not results from controlled tests, so choose by workflow and check each output yourself.
Which free GIF compressor fits your workflow?
| Your priority | Option | What it offers | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Batch desktop processing | FileOptimizer | The Windows Club describes batch processing and optimization-level options. | The comparison says it overwrites input files. Keep a separate original; the article does not provide benchmark results. |
| Desktop previews and controls | GIF Optimizer | The Windows Club describes side-by-side and frame-by-frame previews, color controls and cleanup options. | Confirm current download availability and Windows compatibility before installing. |
| Online compression with several controls | Ezgif GIF Optimizer | Offers lossy compression, palette and frame adjustments, transparency optimization and coalescing. | Requires uploading the file. Ezgif states a 200 MB maximum and automatic deletion of uploaded files after one hour; these are the service’s stated terms, not a general guarantee about online tools. |
| Online compression to a size cap | Ezgif Target Size Compressor | Uses presets and repeated adjustments to aim for a chosen file-size limit. | Check the current preset and the destination’s actual upload limit; hitting a size target does not ensure acceptable image quality. |
| Browser-local processing | GIF Optimizer by Simon Willison | Uses Gifsicle compiled to WebAssembly; its page says processing happens in the browser and provides manual controls. | The page does not establish comparative performance or compatibility with every browser and device. |
| Other online alternatives | Compressor.io, GIFGIFs and iLoveIMG | The Windows Club comparison describes features such as batch processing, previews, compression methods or file limits. | Recheck current free-tier limits, upload handling and available features before relying on them. |
The comparison of GIF Optimizer, FileOptimizer and online services was published by The Windows Club on August 23, 2026. It describes product features rather than testing the tools on the same files. No reviewed source establishes which option is fastest, produces the smallest files or preserves the most quality under a common test.

How to shrink a GIF without ruining it
Work from the biggest sources of unnecessary data toward finer encoder changes. Save a copy first, especially if using a tool reported to overwrite its input.
- Crop empty or irrelevant areas. Remove borders and surrounding space that do not contribute to the image.
- Resize to the destination’s actual display dimensions. Smaller pixel dimensions typically make a GIF smaller, though Ezgif notes that a small reduction can sometimes increase file size. Preview the result rather than assuming every resize helps. Ezgif’s optimization guidance
- Trim the animation. Remove unnecessary beginning or ending frames and shorten pauses if the tool allows it.
- Try dropping redundant frames. Removing every second, third or fourth frame can reduce size, but it also lowers the frame rate and may make movement less smooth. Keep only the reduction that still looks right.
- Test lossy compression and fewer colors. Both can reduce data, but may introduce dithering, noise or visible color changes. Ezgif says its lossy method can reduce animated GIF size by 30%–50%; this is the service’s stated range, not an independent or head-to-head measurement. Compare the result with the original at its intended display size. Ezgif GIF Optimizer Ezgif optimization guidance
- Try transparency optimization for suitable images. It may help when large areas stay unchanged between frames, as in some screen recordings. It tends to be less useful when much of the picture changes from frame to frame. Check for visual artifacts around moving edges. Ezgif optimization guidance
- Use a target-size tool only when a cap matters. Adjustments to dimensions, frames and colors can help reach a limit, but inspect both the actual file size and the animation before uploading. Destination-platform limits can change. Ezgif Target Size Compressor
When should you use an online tool or a desktop app?
Choose a desktop app for batches or local file handling
A desktop workflow can suit a folder of GIFs or people who prefer not to upload images to a service. FileOptimizer is described as a batch option, but its reported overwrite behavior makes a backup important. The Windows Club also describes preview and color controls in GIF Optimizer; verify that its current installer is available and compatible with your Windows setup. The feature descriptions do not establish a quality or speed winner. The Windows Club’s Windows GIF optimizer comparison

Choose an online tool for quick, adjustable edits
Ezgif exposes several GIF-specific controls in one place, including lossy compression, palette changes, frame removal and transparency optimization. Its service says it accepts files up to 200 MB and automatically deletes uploads after one hour. Those statements apply to Ezgif’s page and may change; they should not be generalized to other services. If the GIF is sensitive, consider whether uploading it is appropriate, or use a local workflow instead. Ezgif GIF Optimizer
Choose browser-local processing when you want a web interface without a server upload
Simon Willison’s GIF Optimizer uses Gifsicle compiled to WebAssembly, and its page says the work happens in the browser. That is a different workflow from submitting a GIF to an online service. The page does not establish compatibility across all browsers or devices, so test it with your setup and file. GIF Optimizer by Simon Willison

What to compare before settling on a tool
- Processing location: Does the file stay on your computer, get processed in the browser, or need to be uploaded to a service?
- Batch support: Can the tool handle multiple files in the workflow you need?
- Input limits: Check the current maximum file size and free-tier terms.
- Control: Can you adjust colors, frames, dimensions, lossy compression or transparency?
- Preview and recovery: Can you inspect the animation before saving, and are the original files preserved?
- Output quality: Does the final file still look and move acceptably at the size where people will see it?
For other online options, the Windows Club lists Compressor.io, GIFGIFs and iLoveIMG, but their free features and upload terms should be checked directly before use. The comparison does not test them against the same GIFs. The Windows Club comparison

If the destination accepts another animated format, consider whether GIF is necessary. Ezgif’s help page claims AVIF, WebP and APNG can be 50%–90% smaller than GIF while supporting more colors and full alpha transparency. That range is the service’s claim, not an independently measured result; compatibility depends on the destination, so verify that it supports the replacement format before converting.
