How to Move to Southampton from Overseas: Visas, Housing and Practical Steps

Moving to Southampton from overseas means securing the right immigration permission first, then arranging housing and completing local setup. Here is the order to follow.

Moving to Southampton from overseas starts with identifying the UK immigration route that fits your nationality, reason for coming and length of stay. Apply from overseas and wait for approval before travelling; then arrange housing, prepare evidence for any right-to-rent check, and set up council tax and utilities after you move in. Students have additional university steps.

1. Which UK immigration route do you need?

There is no single “Southampton visa.” Your route depends on why you are coming—such as study, sponsored work, joining family or settlement—as well as your nationality, intended stay and personal circumstances. Non-British and non-Irish nationals should begin with the GOV.UK visa and ETA checker, then follow the official application guidance for the route it identifies.

Requirements, fees, processing times and permitted activities vary by route and can change. Do not assume that a visa suitable for a short visit permits you to live, work or study in the UK. If you are unsure which route applies, use the official guidance or seek advice from a qualified immigration adviser.

2. Apply and wait for approval before travelling

  1. Follow the application instructions for your route. Complete the required identity checks and submit the application from overseas using the current UK Visas and Immigration process.
  2. Wait for the decision before travelling. UK Visas and Immigration’s overseas guidance, updated 9 September 2026, states: “You must not travel to the UK before your visa application is approved.”
  3. Follow the decision instructions for proving your status. Check how to access and use your eVisa or other status evidence. Older references to physical biometric residence permit cards or visa vignettes may not match current arrangements; rely on the instructions for your own application.

Allow for the possibility that a decision or status-access step may take longer than expected before committing to non-refundable travel or a fixed move-in date.

3. Check whether the immigration health surcharge applies

Check the surcharge rules for your exact immigration route and for each relevant applicant. The general GOV.UK rule is that people applying from outside the UK for a visa or immigration application lasting more than six months usually pay the immigration health surcharge, but exemptions apply. Paying for private insurance does not, by itself, remove a surcharge obligation when one is due.

Where the surcharge is required and paid, NHS access generally begins on the visa start date. It does not cover every charge: prescriptions, dental treatment, eye tests and some other services may still cost extra.

4. Choose housing and prepare for right to rent

Compare accommodation against your expected arrival date and, if relevant, your course or work dates. Look at the full contract rather than the headline rent: contract length and dates, which bills are included, furnishings, location, deposit and other permitted charges all affect the total cost and practicality of a home.

Option What to compare Right-to-rent point
University-managed halls Offer terms, contract dates, included bills, location and move-in arrangements. Confirm what status evidence the accommodation provider needs and when.
Private student accommodation Contract length, rent, bills or services included, location and furnishings. Ask the provider how it will complete the required check for your circumstances.
Private tenancy Rent, contract dates, utilities, furnishings, location, deposit and permitted upfront charges. The landlord must establish right to rent before the tenancy; prepare eligible status evidence.

Right to rent is an England-specific check. Non-British and non-Irish citizens can generally prove eligibility using an eligible share code or original immigration documents. A landlord can use a share code to check whether you can rent and for how long. If your status is digital, make sure you can access your UKVI account and retrieve a share code through the current official service where applicable. Immigration permission and the landlord’s separate check are distinct; having a visa does not guarantee a particular tenancy.

GOV.UK guidance says a landlord can require a tenancy deposit of up to five weeks’ rent where the annual rent is below £50,000. This is a deposit cap, not an estimate of Southampton rents. Check the current rule and the terms of the particular tenancy before paying.

The official sources cited here do not establish a current typical rent for Southampton. Avoid treating an undated citywide figure as a reliable budget: compare actual properties of the same type and location, and check exactly which bills are included.

5. Set up council tax and utilities after moving in

  1. Register with Southampton City Council for council tax. Register after you move even if you expect an exemption or discount. The council says, “You still need to register even if you don’t pay Council Tax.” Its moving-in service asks for tenancy or move-in dates and adult household details, and says processing can take up to 21 days.
  2. Provide evidence if you are claiming a student exemption. The University of Southampton’s student advice says students should supply evidence of full-time registration and should not ignore council-tax bills while seeking an exemption.
  3. Sort out gas and electricity billing for a private tenancy. Ask the landlord or agent which suppliers serve the property, record applicable meter readings on move-in, and contact the suppliers with your move-in date and readings so billing starts from the correct date.
  4. Check other household services and local practicalities. Southampton’s new-resident checklist points residents to council tax and utility setup. Confirm any other services you need directly with the relevant provider.

6. If you are coming to study at the University of Southampton

Use the University’s current before-arrival and welcome instructions for student visa advice, accommodation, enrolment, identity documents and local GP registration. The university recommends that UK and international students register with a local doctor or university health service.

The university’s airport meet-and-greet offer is limited to eligible first-time students staying in university halls or a named partner hall. Check current dates and conditions with the university rather than assuming the service is available for every student or accommodation type.

7. A specialist accommodation report for some family applications

If you are sponsoring someone’s entry-clearance or settlement application, the proposed accommodation may need to be shown as suitable. Southampton City Council offers a paid inspection and report service for this specific purpose; it is not a standard requirement for ordinary renters. The council page accessed in 2026 listed an initial fee of £269 for one person, £189 for a repeat application within 12 months, and £93 for each additional person. Fees can change, so confirm the current charge with the council before applying.
