The settings can be chosen separately for plugged-in and battery use, but the labels and availability differ by platform.
Choose a mode for the task

There is no source-backed universal speed gain or battery-runtime increase for selecting a mode. Results depend on the laptop, its configuration, workload, and display use. If performance mode does not help the task, switch back to the everyday or efficiency option.

Set power mode in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Under Power mode, choose a setting for Plugged in or On Battery. You can set the two states differently.
- Choose Balanced for ordinary use, Best performance for a demanding task, or Best power efficiency when reducing power use is the priority.
If the mode selector cannot be changed, Microsoft says a custom power plan may be selected. Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options and select Balanced, then check the Settings page again. See Microsoft’s power-mode instructions.

Windows 10 note
Some Windows 10 laptops offer a taskbar battery slider for a quick adjustment, but its availability depends on the device and manufacturer. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; this is legacy guidance, not a statement that the system continues to receive free Windows Update security fixes. Microsoft’s power-mode page covers the slider and support status.

Set an Energy Mode on a Mac
- Open the Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Battery.
- Under Energy Mode, choose Low Power Mode, Automatic, or High Power Mode from the On battery or On power adapter menu.
In macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later, Apple also says Energy Modes can be selected from Control Center. High Power Mode is not available on every MacBook: Apple lists it for specified MacBook Pro models, including 2024-or-later models with Pro or Max chips and 2021–2023 models with Max chips, alongside qualifications for other Mac products. Check Apple’s current model and macOS requirements before looking for the option.
Reduce battery use without sacrificing useful performance
On Windows, power mode is only one control. Microsoft also recommends settings that reduce idle or background use; adjust them to fit how you work:

- Turn on Energy saver, which dims the screen and limits background processes.
- Lower screen brightness and shorten the screen and sleep timers so the display turns off and the laptop sleeps sooner when idle.
- Enable Dynamic refresh rate if your display supports it; it can lower refresh during static tasks.
- Turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you are not using them.
Microsoft’s technical documentation says background-app power throttling can save up to 11% in CPU power by throttling CPU frequency. That figure describes background CPU power, not a guaranteed whole-device battery-life increase; the documentation says throttling is engaged except when the slider is set to Best Performance, which opts applications out.
