To enlarge a chest or turn a regular chest into a Magic Chest, use the in-place upgrade or conversion option. Keen Games’ 1.0 release notes state that storage chests can be upgraded without emptying or picking them up, and that they can be converted to Magic Chests the same way. If you need the chest in a different physical location, use a separate, safer process: transfer every item to your backpack or a temporary chest, pick up the empty chest, place it at the destination, and transfer the items back.
First decide whether you need an upgrade or a relocation
“Move,” “replace,” and “upgrade” describe different actions in Enshrouded. Choosing the wrong one can create unnecessary item-transfer work or leave you uncertain about whether your materials are safe.

The distinction matters because the game explicitly supports in-place storage changes, while the available patch notes do not promise a universal procedure for picking up a filled Magic Chest and retaining its inventory. Treat a physical move as an empty-first operation.
Upgrade or convert a chest in place
If your objective is more capacity or workshop-linked storage, leave the chest where it is and use its upgrade or conversion interaction. This is the lowest-risk option because the inventory remains inside the existing object throughout the change.

Upgrade to a larger tier
- Go to the chest you want to improve and open its interaction menu.
- Choose the available upgrade option rather than a pickup or destruction action.
- Confirm the upgrade using the required materials shown by the game.
- Reopen the upgraded chest and verify that your stacks are still present.
Keen Games’ 1.0 release notes specifically say storage chests can be upgraded “in place without having to empty them and pick them up first.” That removes the old, risky workflow of unloading a chest merely to increase its size. The release-note wording applies to storage-chest upgrades generally; it does not require you to specify a particular tier before beginning. The game presents the valid next upgrade for the chest you are using.
Convert a regular chest to a Magic Chest
- Approach the regular storage chest that already contains your materials.
- Open the chest’s available conversion or upgrade interaction.
- Select the Magic Chest conversion when it is offered.
- Confirm the recipe or material cost shown in your current build.
- Open the resulting Magic Chest and check that the inventory is unchanged.
The same 1.0 notes say storage chests can be converted to Magic Chests without cleaning them out and picking them up as crafting resources. Conversion therefore changes the chest’s function while keeping the existing inventory in place. You do not need a temporary holding chest for this operation.
What to do if the option is missing
- Make sure you are interacting with a storage chest and not another prop that only resembles one.
- Check that you have the materials displayed by the current recipe.
- Confirm that the chest is in a location where you can interact with it normally.
- If you are trying to replace it with a different physical object, stop and follow the relocation procedure instead; conversion is not the same as moving furniture.
Because interface labels and recipes can change between builds, use the exact action shown by your game rather than relying on an old button name. The preservation behavior documented by Keen Games concerns the in-place upgrade and conversion path.
Move a Magic Chest to another location safely
Physical relocation is the case that requires manual handling. The safest sequence is to empty the chest completely, pick up the now-empty chest, place it at the destination, and refill it. This recommendation is deliberately conservative: Patch #14 says it is generally no longer possible to destroy filled chests and other props that contain items, with a few listed exceptions, but that safeguard is not a guarantee that every filled-chest pickup or relocation edge case preserves inventory.
Prepare a temporary holding location
- Choose the destination before touching the existing chest. Clear the floor, wall, or platform where you intend to place it.
- Prepare enough temporary capacity. Use free backpack slots, another chest, or a combination of both.
- Check that you have room for every item stack. Do not start if you expect to leave a partial stack behind.
- If the chest is used by workshops, note which nearby crafting stations depend on it so you can check their access after the move.
A second chest is usually easier than relying entirely on backpack space, especially when the source chest contains many stacks. The goal is not speed; it is an inventory transfer you can verify.

Empty the chest completely
- Open the Magic Chest and transfer items to your backpack or the temporary chest.
- Work through every page or slot, including materials you do not currently need.
- Look for single items or small stacks hidden among larger stacks.
- Close and reopen the chest once it appears empty. Confirm that no item remains.
Do not assume that moving the visible stacks is enough. A truly empty chest is the safest object to pick up, and a final reopen-and-check catches an overlooked slot before the furniture is removed.
Pick up and place the empty chest
- With the inventory confirmed empty, use the normal pickup action on the chest.
- Carry or position it at the prepared destination.
- Place the chest and make sure it is actually deployed rather than still attached to the placement preview.
- Open it once at the new location to confirm that the object is usable.
If the game refuses the pickup, stop rather than forcing another action. Reopen the chest and check again for a remaining item. The anti-destruction rule protects filled props in general, but the cited notes do not establish that every placement or pickup scenario behaves identically.
Return the items and verify the transfer
- Move the stored items from the temporary location back into the relocated Magic Chest.
- Use a consistent order, such as materials first and finished items second, so missing stacks are easier to spot.
- Reopen the chest after the transfer and compare its contents with the temporary holding location.
- Only clear the temporary chest or discard any temporary arrangement after the count is correct.
Keep the old temporary copy available until you have checked the relocated chest. This gives you a recovery point if a stack was overlooked during the move.
Replace a chest with a newly crafted one
Sometimes “replace” means building a new chest rather than moving the original. Treat this as two separate objects and do not remove the old one until the new one is confirmed usable.
- Craft or obtain the replacement chest and place it in the intended position.
- Open the new chest and confirm that it accepts items.
- Transfer the old chest’s contents in a deliberate pass, checking each stack as it moves.
- If the replacement is a Magic Chest, test workshop access from the stations that need those materials.
- Keep the original chest intact until the transfer and access checks are complete.
In-place conversion is preferable when your actual goal is Magic Chest functionality, because it avoids this double-chest transfer. Craft a replacement only when you need a different physical object, a new layout, or a separate storage location.

Check workshop access after a physical move
Magic Chests are useful not only because of their slot count but also because workshops can use their contents when the chest is within the relevant coverage area. Moving the chest changes that geometry, so a relocation needs an access check even when every item was transferred correctly.
Small Magic Chest coverage
The maintained Small Magic Chest reference lists 24 slots and workshop access within an approximately 100-meter circular area. “Approximately” matters: the reference also warns that range information can change, so treat the figure as a practical guide rather than a permanent guarantee for every future build.
Larger Magic Chest coverage
The maintained storage reference lists capacities for the Magic Chest tiers and describes the Enormous Magic Chest as usable throughout the Flame Altar base. Verify that behavior in your current game build before depending on it for a distant workshop. A chest’s capacity and its workshop coverage are separate questions; a larger inventory does not automatically prove a particular radius.
A simple access test
- Place the relocated chest where you intend to keep it.
- Stand at a workshop that should use materials from the chest.
- Attempt a recipe that requires an item stored in that Magic Chest.
- If the item is not available, move the chest closer to the workshop or use another chest within the working area.
- Repeat the test for the workshops that matter to your base rather than assuming one successful station proves universal coverage.
This test is more reliable than measuring distance manually because it checks the actual behavior of your current build and layout.

The maintained Storage reference lists the following capacities for Magic Chest tiers. These are slot counts, not a promise about the number of individual items, because stack sizes determine how much each slot can hold.

Use the tier that fits your layout rather than upgrading solely for a larger number. If a chest is already positioned correctly and your only need is capacity, an in-place upgrade avoids the entire empty-and-refill process.

If your build includes a Quick Stack Station, it can reduce the time required to return stackable backpack items to nearby Magic Chests. The official Forging the Path notes describe the station as automatically depositing stackable backpack items into nearby Magic Chests. They also state that Magic Chests can be toggled to accept or deny this automatic depositing.

- Keep the items from the old chest in your backpack after the empty-first pickup.
- Place the relocated Magic Chest and make sure it is within the station’s nearby coverage.
- Use the Quick Stack Station to deposit stackable items.
- Check the Magic Chest for materials that should not have been moved automatically, such as non-stackable items or anything excluded by the chest’s setting.
- Manually place the remaining items and verify the final inventory.
Quick Stack is a convenience, not a substitute for verification. It handles eligible stackable items, while your final check must account for every item that was in the original chest.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Trying to upgrade by picking up a full chest
This adds risk and work that the 1.0 system is designed to remove. If you only want a larger tier, put the chest back in its original position and use the in-place upgrade interaction. Do not unload the chest unless you are genuinely changing its physical location.
Assuming conversion requires a new empty chest
A regular storage chest can be converted to a Magic Chest in place according to Keen Games’ 1.0 notes. If you have already built a second chest for this purpose, leave the original intact, perform the documented conversion, and then decide whether the second chest is still needed.
Leaving one stack behind
When relocating, reopen the source chest after transferring everything. If a stack remains, move it before pickup. If you already placed the empty chest and discover an item in the temporary location, return that item to the relocated chest and compare both inventories again.

Keep the old chest until the new one opens correctly, accepts the transferred items, and passes your workshop-access test. This is especially important when replacing a chest with a different type rather than converting the existing object.
Moving the chest outside workshop coverage
An inventory can be perfectly intact while crafting stations can no longer use it. Test a recipe that depends on the relocated chest. If access fails, reposition the chest or provide another Magic Chest within the workshop’s effective area.
Relying on a range number as a permanent rule
The approximately 100-meter figure for a Small Magic Chest and the Flame Altar-base description for an Enormous Magic Chest come from maintained references that caution that range behavior can change. Use the in-game recipe test as the final authority for your current build.
Conservative relocation checklist
- Identify whether the goal is an upgrade, a conversion, a physical move, or a brand-new replacement.
- Use in-place upgrade or conversion whenever the chest does not need to change position.
- For a physical move, prepare a temporary chest or enough backpack space for every item.
- Transfer every stack and reopen the source chest to confirm it is empty.
- Pick up only the empty chest, then place it at the prepared destination.
- Return all items and compare the relocated inventory with the temporary holding location.
- Check workshop access from the stations that depend on the chest.
- Use Quick Stack Station for eligible stackable items, then manually verify anything it did not move.
- Keep the temporary chest or old replacement until the final inventory and crafting checks pass.
What the current rules mean for your items
Items remain in place during the documented in-place upgrade and regular-to-Magic conversion. A physical move is different: the safe procedure is to remove the items first, relocate the empty object, and then restore the inventory. Patch #14’s filled-prop protection reduces the chance of accidental destruction, but it is not evidence of a guaranteed filled-chest relocation method. Planning around the empty-first sequence avoids depending on an undocumented edge case.
