The games use different save formats, so copying an old .ess file into the Remastered directory will not convert it. Keep the classic installation and its saves intact, back them up, and begin a new Remastered character. Remastered-to-Remastered transfers are practical; an Xbox Game Pass PC save can also be moved to Steam with a community utility.
Mods require the same separation. Remastered has no official Bethesda mod support, and classic Oblivion plugins are not automatically compatible. Treat the project as a new mod setup: preserve the old profile, find Remastered-compatible ports, and add them one at a time.

What can and cannot move
Think of classic Oblivion and Oblivion Remastered as separate games rather than two installations sharing a character database. The safest plan depends on which game created the save and which platform will run the destination copy.
| Item | Classic Oblivion to Remastered | Remastered to Remastered | Official support status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original character save | Not supported. The original game’s save and progression files are not recognized by Remastered. | Usually usable when the destination is the same Remastered release and the files are copied correctly. | Bethesda explicitly excludes original-game saves. |
| Xbox Game Pass PC save to Steam Remastered | Not applicable to a classic save. | Possible with the community Oblivion Remastered Save Transfer Tool; it is a copy operation, not an official Bethesda feature. | Community-supported and subject to version or mod incompatibilities. |
| Classic mods | No automatic migration. A matching filename does not prove compatibility. | Only a Remastered-built version should be used. | Bethesda says Remastered mods are not officially supported. |
| Cloud or platform progress | Cannot be used to bridge classic Oblivion and Remastered. | Limited by the platform family and account services. | Bethesda says there is no cross-save between different platforms. |
That distinction prevents the most common mistake: replacing a working Remastered save directory with files from the older game and expecting an importer to appear. No supported conversion step exists.

Find the classic saves and make a real backup
Classic PC save location
For the original PC release, Bethesda documents this folder:
C:Users<username>DocumentsMy GamesOblivionSaves
Replace <username> with your Windows account name. The folder contains the classic game’s save files, commonly using the .ess extension. Do not edit, rename, or reorganize the only copy while preparing a migration.
Use a dated, separate copy
- Close classic Oblivion, Remastered, Steam, the Xbox App, and any mod manager that might write to a profile.
- Open the classic
Savesfolder in File Explorer. - Copy the entire
Savesfolder, not just the newest-looking file. - Paste it into a separate location such as an external drive or a folder named with the date, for example
Oblivion-classic-saves-backup-2026-10-20. - Open the copied folder and confirm that the files are present. Keep the original folder untouched.
A USB flash drive is sufficient for a small save backup, but keep at least one copy that is not permanently mounted to the gaming PC. This protects the character if a mod manager, cloud client, or accidental delete changes the working folder.
Preserve the old installation and mod profile
If you still want to play the original character, leave the classic installation and its mod setup available. Bethesda’s documented folder-copy procedure is for moving saves to another classic Oblivion installation; it does not convert those saves for Remastered. Keep the classic load order, archives, configuration files, and mod-manager profile together so that returning to the old game does not require reconstructing it from memory.

If Documents is redirected to OneDrive
Windows can redirect Documents into OneDrive. In that case, look for the same My GamesOblivionSaves subfolders beneath the OneDrive Documents location shown by Bethesda, rather than creating a second local folder. The decisive test is whether the folder contains the saves used by your classic installation. Back up the folder that actually changes when you create a new classic save.
Prepare Remastered without touching the classic files
Create the destination folder
- Launch Oblivion Remastered once from Steam or the Xbox App for PC.
- Start a temporary character and make one manual save. This forces Windows and the game to create the Remastered save tree.
- Exit the game normally.
- Check the Remastered location:
C:Users<username>DocumentsMy GamesOblivion RemasteredSavedSaveGames
If your Documents library is redirected, use the corresponding OneDrive Documents path. The important difference is the directory name: Remastered uses Oblivion RemasteredSavedSaveGames, while classic Oblivion uses OblivionSaves.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not paste classic saves into this folder
The two locations are separate because the games store progression in incompatible formats. Copying a classic .ess file into SaveGames will not make it appear in the Remastered load menu and can make troubleshooting harder. Delete only a temporary test save you created yourself; leave the backed-up classic files alone.

Use simple names for new manual saves
Bethesda documents cases in which unexpected characters in a character or save name prevent a new manual save from appearing. Avoid spaces, ampersands, slashes, and other punctuation while testing the installation. If a manual save disappears, try a short name containing letters and numbers, then check whether an autosave is still being created. This isolates a naming problem from a folder-permission or cloud-sync problem.
Move an Xbox Game Pass PC Remastered save to Steam
The practical exception to the usual platform boundary is a Remastered save made through the Xbox App for PC or Game Pass PC and moved to Steam. The Nexus Mods Oblivion Remastered Save Transfer Tool is a Windows utility for this one-way workflow. Its listed version is 0.1.1, from HIDDENLOTUSTECH, last updated 9 May 2025. It is not a Bethesda service and should be treated as a community tool whose behavior can change.
Before you run the utility
- Install and launch the Steam edition once.
- Create at least one native Steam Remastered save, then exit the game. The utility recommends this so the destination structure and profile are known to exist.
- Close both game processes before transferring.
- Back up the Xbox App save and the Steam save folder. The utility states that it copies source saves rather than deleting or overwriting them, but an independent backup is still the reversible option.
- Keep the Steam and Xbox versions updated to compatible builds where possible.
Transfer procedure
- Open the Save Transfer Tool.
- Select the Xbox App/Game Pass Remastered save as the source.
- Select the Steam Remastered installation or destination identified by the tool.
- Start the transfer and wait for the copy to finish; do not launch either game during this step.
- Review the generated filename. The tool specifically recommends checking it before loading.
- Launch the Steam edition and look for the transferred save in the load menu.
- Load it, confirm the character and progress, and make a fresh Steam save before changing mods or deleting anything.
Some saves can still fail to load. The utility warns that game-version differences or mods may make an individual save incompatible. A successful file copy therefore is not proof that every scripted quest, inventory item, or mod dependency will work in the destination environment.

What this tool does not do
- It does not convert a classic Oblivion save into a Remastered save.
- It does not establish general cross-save between Xbox consoles, Xbox App for PC, Steam, PlayStation, or other platforms.
- It does not repair a save that is already damaged or dependent on unavailable mods.
- It does not mean that future cloud synchronization will be shared automatically between Xbox and Steam.
Rebuild mods instead of copying the old mod folder
Understand the official limitation
Bethesda’s support position is explicit: “Mods are not officially supported for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.” If a modded installation fails, Bethesda recommends removing mods and verifying the game files through Steam or the Xbox App. Community tools can make installation easier, but they do not turn an unsupported setup into an officially tested one.

Inventory the classic setup first
Before installing anything in Remastered, record the classic profile separately:
- Mod names and exact versions.
- Archive files and where they came from.
- Plugin files and load order.
- Required script extenders, external tools, reshades, and configuration edits.
- Which saves depend on particular mods.
Preserving this inventory lets you return to classic Oblivion without confusing its files with the Remastered experiment. It also shows which features need a genuine port rather than a simple file copy.
Check for a Remastered port
Look for an explicit Remastered compatibility statement or a package built for the Remastered engine. Original .esp and .esm files are not automatically safe merely because a Remastered mod has a similar name. A classic plugin may rely on the original executable, original data records, a script extender, or a directory layout that does not exist in Remastered.
Formats supported by the Vortex extension
The community Vortex extension listed for Remastered is version 0.1.8, last updated 2 July 2025. Its own warning says the correct deployment pattern is still being investigated, so use it as a convenience layer rather than a compatibility guarantee.

A low-risk mod installation sequence
- Create a clean Remastered profile with no community mods.
- Launch the game and make a new save.
- Install one Remastered-compatible mod, including all stated prerequisites.
- Launch, test the affected feature, and make another new save.
- Close the game and note the mod version and result.
- Repeat one mod at a time. If the game fails, remove the last addition first and verify files through Steam or the Xbox App if necessary.
Do not use a classic save as the first test subject. A new Remastered save makes it easier to tell whether a problem comes from the mod, the transferred character, or an unsupported legacy dependency.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Platform and cloud-save boundaries
Bethesda states that “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered does not support cross-save between different platforms.” Xbox Play Anywhere is narrower than general cross-save: it synchronizes supported progress between Xbox consoles and the Xbox App for PC, not with Steam or every other PC storefront.
| Source | Destination | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox console | Xbox App for PC, under Xbox Play Anywhere | Supported synchronization where the title and account qualify. |
| Xbox App for PC/Game Pass | Steam | Use the community transfer utility; do not expect automatic cloud sharing. |
| Steam | Xbox App for PC | No general official cross-save path is documented. |
| Classic PC Oblivion | Any Remastered platform | Unsupported save format; begin a new Remastered character. |
| Remastered PC | Another platform family | Limited by Bethesda’s no-cross-save policy and the platform’s own services. |
Troubleshooting common migration failures
The old save does not appear in Remastered
This is the expected result for a classic save, not evidence that you chose the wrong folder. Restore the backed-up classic installation and continue that character there. For a Remastered-to-Remastered transfer, confirm that the destination is the Remastered SaveGames folder, that the save was created by the same game family, and that the game was closed while files were copied.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11A new Remastered manual save vanishes
Retry with a short name containing only letters and numbers. Bethesda documents failures associated with spaces, ampersands, slashes, and other unexpected characters. If autosaves appear but manual saves do not, naming is a stronger suspect than a missing directory. If neither appears, check that the game can write to the Documents location and that OneDrive is not redirecting you to a different folder.
The transfer utility copied the file but Steam will not load it
First confirm that Steam was launched and had already created a native save. Recheck the generated filename and destination, then restore the independent backup if you need to retry. A version mismatch or a save that depends on unavailable mods can prevent loading even when the copy itself completed correctly.
Remastered crashes after adding a mod
Remove the newest mod and return to the clean profile. Verify the game files through Steam or the Xbox App, then launch with a new test save. Check whether the package is a genuine Remastered port, whether its archive structure matches the expected PAK, Lua/UE4SS, Blueprint, or plugin format, and whether it requires an external tool that is not installed. Do not assume that a classic plugin with the same filename is interchangeable.
OneDrive seems to contain different saves
Compare timestamps while the game is closed, then create one clearly named test save and identify which folder changes. Back up that active folder. Avoid merging the local and OneDrive trees manually; two competing Documents locations can make it appear that saves are missing when the game is simply reading a different path.
Quick Recap
A practical migration decision guide
| Your starting point | Recommended action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Oblivion character you want to keep | Back up the classic Saves folder and keep playing the original installation. |
There is no supported classic-to-Remastered save conversion. |
| New Remastered playthrough | Launch Remastered once, create a test save, and build a clean profile before adding mods. | It establishes the correct destination and gives you a known-good baseline. |
| Xbox Game Pass PC Remastered character moving to Steam | Create a Steam save, use Save Transfer Tool 0.1.1, inspect the resulting filename, and test-load it. | This is the documented community route for that specific PC-to-PC direction. |
| Classic modded setup | Archive the old profile and rebuild from Remastered-specific ports one at a time. | Classic files, dependencies, and external tools are not automatically valid. |
| Modded Remastered setup that breaks | Remove the latest mod, verify files, and test with a clean save. | It isolates unsupported content from save or platform problems. |
Final migration checklist
