How to Move Games Between Internal and Expansion Storage on a Handheld

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 have model-specific software-data move commands. Windows handhelds rely on launcher controls, and saved game progress is separate.

The steps depend on your handheld: Nintendo Switch 2 has a dedicated move command for a microSD Express card; Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED have a separate command for a microSD card. On Windows handhelds such as ASUS ROG Ally, the game launcher controls how installed games are moved. These procedures move game software—not saved progress.

Before you move anything, identify the device and storage type

Check the exact handheld model and the card standard it supports. Nintendo Switch 2 uses microSD Express; the original Switch family uses microSD. ASUS says ROG Ally supports a microSD card reader, including UHS-II cards and backward-compatible cards. A card that fits physically is not necessarily the correct standard for every device.

Also distinguish installed game software from save data. The Nintendo move commands below do not migrate saved progress. If your goal is to move saves, use the platform’s separate save-transfer or backup options rather than the software-data command.

Move software on Nintendo Switch 2

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Choose Move System / microSD Express Card Data.
  4. Select the data to move and confirm.

Nintendo Support says, “Save data and some update data cannot be migrated.” The command moves eligible software data; it does not set a permanent destination for future installations. Nintendo also says, “This is not a feature to specify where data is installed to.” Later update data may be stored in the location you did not select. Use a microSD Express card for Switch 2, as specified in Nintendo’s Switch 2 instructions.

Move software on Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Choose Move Data Between System / microSD Card.
  4. Select the data to move and confirm.

As on Switch 2, save data and some update data cannot be migrated, and later update data may be stored in the other location. The menu command is for eligible software data, not a setting for where all future downloads or updates will go. See Nintendo’s instructions for Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED.

Nintendo support pages can describe different workflows by region or update state. For example, Nintendo Australia describes deleting or archiving downloadable software and redownloading it with a microSD card inserted. Follow the instructions and menu labels shown for your console and region rather than combining that workflow with a different region’s current move command. Nintendo Australia also says save data cannot be copied to a microSD card; see its regional guidance.

Move games on a Windows handheld

ASUS ROG Ally

ASUS documents microSD card support and says games can be installed to that storage, but its support material does not establish one exact transfer path for an already-installed game. ROG Ally supports multiple launchers, so the move controls depend on where the game is installed. Open that launcher’s current storage or game-management controls and verify its instructions before moving an installation. ASUS’s ROG Ally FAQ covers supported launchers and storage capabilities.

Other Windows handhelds

Windows handhelds do not share one universal game-moving procedure. The relevant controls are provided by the launcher or store used to install the title. Check that launcher’s current settings for a library or install-location option; do not assume a procedure for one launcher applies to another.

Use expansion storage on Steam Deck

Steam’s support guide documents formatting a microSD card through Steam > Settings > System > Format SD Card. Formatting prepares the card and can erase its contents, so back up files you need before doing it. For moving an installed game, use the current Steam library storage controls and check the labels on your SteamOS version; the available support instructions do not establish a detailed, current move sequence. See the Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.

If you are replacing a Nintendo Switch microSD card

Replacing a card is different from moving software between internal storage and an expansion card. Nintendo says software on a Switch microSD card cannot be played on a different Switch system and recommends using one card per system. For a card replacement on the same system, Nintendo’s procedure is to copy the entire folder from the old card to the new one, keep the original until the replacement works, and use Windows for the recommended copy procedure. Follow the complete Nintendo microSD card-transfer instructions.
