You can create a new image in ChatGPT by describing it in a conversation or opening Images and entering a prompt. To revise an image, ask for a change in the conversation or open the image editor and select an area to edit. The editor’s selection is not exact, so check the full result after each change.
Create an image in ChatGPT
Open a ChatGPT conversation and describe the image you want, or go to Images and enter your prompt. OpenAI’s Images in ChatGPT guide describes the current experience as ChatGPT Images 2.5. It presents sharper detail, more precise editing, and faster generation as product claims, not as independently measured comparisons.

A useful prompt structure is: subject + purpose + important visual details + style + text to include + aspect ratio. This is a practical way to organize a request, not a required syntax.
- Describe the subject and the details that matter. Include setting, composition, colors, or other features that define the intended result.
- For a poster or other text-bearing design, state its purpose and the text to include. Request the wording explicitly rather than assuming ChatGPT will infer it.
- Set the aspect ratio. Use the ratio picker if it appears, or state the desired ratio in your prompt. The guide documents ratio selection, not guaranteed pixel dimensions.
For a template-based start, choose a category and template, customize it, and answer any follow-up questions. You may be able to add a reference image if an upload option appears. The guide says templates can help with designs such as posters or logos, but are not available in Work mode.

Wait for the image to generate. OpenAI says this can take a few minutes depending on request complexity; you can continue using ChatGPT while it runs.
Revise an image or change one area
After generation, you can request a change in the conversation or select the image and use its editing options. In the editor, either select part of the image and describe the change, or leave the image unselected and describe the edit in the conversation panel. If you want a change in a particular place, name that area in your prompt.

- Open the generated image’s editing options.
- Select the area you want to change, if the edit should be localized.
- Describe the change and identify the intended area. For example, say what should change and what should appear there.
- Review the whole image. If the change affects more than intended, give a narrower follow-up instruction or select again.
OpenAI cautions: “Highlights are not always precise, and edits may extend beyond the area you selected.” That means a selection is guidance, not a guarantee that all unselected content will remain untouched. The guide also says ChatGPT Images can follow instructions to add text, details within an image, or a transparent background; it does not promise perfect text rendering or exact preservation of every other part of the image.

Use a sketch on mobile
On mobile, type @, choose Sketch, draw, and confirm the sketch. Then add written instructions, including details such as the subject, colors, or style. You can request further changes after the image appears.

Edit the prompt with an attached image on the web
OpenAI’s release notes record a web update dated February 27, 2026, allowing users to edit messages that include image attachments so they can adjust the prompt or regenerate without starting over. This is a documented web change; the release note does not establish that the same controls are available on every client.
Editor controls and practical limits
The editor supports selecting a region, changing the aspect ratio, undoing or redoing selections, canceling and starting over, and saving. On mobile, image controls include Resize and Remove, and selection size can be adjusted. Labels or controls may vary as the product changes.

- Expect imperfect local edits. The selected highlight can be imprecise, and an edit can spill beyond it. Inspect the whole image before using or sharing it.
- Be specific about the target. Name the intended area and requested change; if needed, make a follow-up request that narrows the edit.
- Do not assume exact dimensions. The ratio picker and prompt can specify an aspect ratio, but the cited guide does not guarantee a particular pixel size.
- Do not assume text or untouched details are exact. Text and background changes are supported instructions, not accuracy guarantees.
Availability and product naming
OpenAI’s help article says ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers and on web, iOS, and Android. It lists Images with thinking for Plus, Pro, and Business, and says it is coming to Enterprise and Edu. That rollout statement is time-sensitive; check the current OpenAI Images guide for availability on your account.
The same guide says the official DALL·E GPT has been retired from ChatGPT and directs users to ChatGPT Images for continued image creation and editing. This statement concerns that GPT in ChatGPT; it does not establish the status of every DALL·E product or API.

Find, save, and share created images
Images created with ChatGPT are automatically saved under Images, where you can browse, revisit, and reuse them. You can copy, download or save, and share a generated image. Deleting the conversation where the image was created also deletes it from My images. On mobile, you can share a generated image prompt as a prompt-template link.
Creating images is different from analyzing uploads
Image creation and editing are separate from image input, which lets you upload an image and ask ChatGPT to analyze it. The image-input rules and limitations should not be mistaken for requirements for generated images or editor edits.
For image input, OpenAI’s image-input FAQ lists PNG, JPEG, and non-animated GIF as supported formats, with a 20 MB per-image limit. The number of images you can add depends on factors including image size and accompanying text. The FAQ also notes analysis limitations involving ambiguous images, non-Latin or rotated text, graphs with visually varied lines, precise spatial localization, panoramic or fisheye images, and exact object counts. Images are resized before analysis, and original file names and metadata are not processed.
