Use Apple’s Move to iOS during the iPhone’s initial setup to transfer supported data such as contacts, messages, photos, videos, calendars, and WhatsApp content. It does not move everything automatically: Apple says music, books, and PDFs must be transferred manually, and some apps or service settings need separate attention. Check storage first, keep both phones powered and undisturbed during the transfer, then verify your important data before wiping or trading in your Android phone.
What transfers—and what does not
Apple’s Move to iOS flow can transfer the following categories, depending on the content and device:

- Contacts, message history and SMS, and call history
- Camera photos and videos, plus photo albums
- Files and folders
- Calendars, mail accounts, and web bookmarks
- Accessibility and display settings
- Voice Memos
- WhatsApp messages and media
- Some free apps, when they are available in both Google Play and the App Store and support the transfer feature
Apps that do not appear on the iPhone can be downloaded separately from the App Store. Apple Support’s “Move from Android to iPhone or iPad” says: “Music, books, and PDFs need to be moved over manually.”

Choose a transfer route

Apple documents both routes in its Android-to-iPhone transfer instructions. If using a cable with Move to iOS, check the ports on both phones before buying one; the cable ends must match the specific devices. The wireless app flow remains an option.

Prepare both phones before transferring
- Check iPhone storage. Compare the amount of Android content you want to move with the iPhone’s available space. Include files stored on an external microSD card in your estimate.
- Connect both phones to power and turn on Wi-Fi on Android.
- Update Chrome on Android if you want to transfer Chrome bookmarks.
- Plan for items that require manual handling. Keep music, books, and PDFs accessible so you can move them separately after setup.
- Keep the Android phone available until you have checked the transferred data and confirmed that cellular service works on the iPhone.
Transfer data with Move to iOS
- Start iPhone setup. Turn on the iPhone and follow the setup prompts. At Transfer Your Apps & Data, choose From Android, then select Transfer with App.
- Open Move to iOS on Android. Accept the app’s prompts, then enter the one-time code displayed on the iPhone. Follow the prompt to join the temporary Wi-Fi network created by the iPhone.
- Select what to move. Choose the data categories you want to transfer and tap Continue.
- Let the transfer finish. Keep the phones close together and connected to power. Leave Move to iOS open on Android and wait until the progress bar on the iPhone completes—even if Android reports that it has finished. Transfer time depends on how much data you selected.
- Complete iPhone setup. When the iPhone indicates the transfer is complete, continue through setup. Download any unmatched apps from the App Store and move music, books, and PDFs manually.
- Check important content and service. Confirm that the data you rely on is present, then check that your phone number and SIM or eSIM service work.
Apple warns that switching to another app or receiving a call on Android before the transfer finishes can interrupt it. Avoid using either phone for other tasks until the iPhone’s progress bar is done.
What to do if the iPhone is already set up
Move to iOS is intended for the iPhone’s initial setup. If you already completed setup, Apple says you can erase the iPhone and start again to use this transfer flow, or move content manually instead. Erasing removes the iPhone’s current contents. Before resetting, back up anything on the iPhone that you need to keep.

If you choose to reset, Apple’s transfer recovery guidance describes erasing the iPhone, returning to setup, choosing From Android, and generating a new code. Apple also documents Mac and PC restore paths on that page. Do not reset until you have protected data already on the iPhone.

Activate your number and SIM or eSIM
Apple says you may be able to activate your number and SIM or eSIM as part of the move, while some users need to finish activation on their carrier’s website. Whether an eSIM can be transferred depends on the carrier and device combination; confirm compatibility and activation steps with your carrier rather than assuming the transfer will happen automatically.

Troubleshoot a transfer that stalls
If the connection drops or progress stops, Apple recommends these steps before trying again:
- Leave Move to iOS open on Android.
- Turn off Android settings or apps that can affect Wi-Fi.
- Forget known Wi-Fi networks on Android.
- Turn off Android cellular data.
- Restart both phones and retry the transfer.
- If the Android phone is connected by cable, check whether its USB settings need adjustment.
If the iPhone appears full or the transfer did not finish, Apple says it may have run out of space or the transfer may have been interrupted. Check that the selected Android content fits the iPhone before retrying. Apple’s guidance for this situation is to erase the iPhone and start again; protect any iPhone data you need before doing so.
