Here is what that design—and the currently confirmed platform and access information—can tell you before deciding whether to keep it on your list.
What is Sword Sage: Awakening?
Sword Sage: Awakening is an upcoming action RPG from Sword Panda Games. The player character is San Niang, a novice disciple of the Yuangong Sect, confronting supernatural threats after forbidden celestial books are leaked. The developer describes a world that blends Chinese mythology and folklore with science-fiction elements: an ancient land where calamities prompted people to develop mechanical technologies. Sword Panda Games’ official site uses the label “amber-punk” for its mechanical wonders; that is the developer’s framing, not an independently established genre classification.

The official pitch also names swordsmanship, leg-heavy attacks, mystical artifacts, and Taoist spells. These are announced ingredients, not proof of how much each will matter in the finished game. The site’s tagline—“Here, Disasters forge wonders and temper souls; Your fearlessness will define history!”—is marketing copy rather than a gameplay promise.

How does its announced combat differ from a familiar dodge roll?
The Steam listing describes the core loop as “Evade Cyan, Strike Red.” Cyan marks an incoming attack; red marks the enemy’s body. Players are expected to identify whether an attack is aimed high, middle, or low, evade in the appropriate direction with suitable timing, then counterattack. That makes directional reading and response the clearest announced distinction from Soulslikes whose defensive rhythm centers on rolling, blocking, or parrying. It does not establish that those other actions are entirely absent from Sword Sage.

The same listing says weapons can fracture during fights with yaoguai and that San Niang carries a sword case that can rapidly forge two weapons. It names three weapon types—the Three Chi Sword, Horse-Cleaving Sword, and Twin Swords—with distinct techniques and weapon skills. Stronger attacks can require well-timed, rapid forging. Taken together, those details suggest a combat loop combining directional defense with weapon-state management; that is an interpretation of the listed systems, not a hands-on finding. Steam’s store listing also tags the game “Souls-like,” “Martial Arts,” “Swordplay,” “Wuxia,” and “Xianxia.” Store tags are classifications, not a guarantee that it follows every convention associated with Soulslikes.
What should you compare when choosing another Soulslike?
Use the same questions for each game rather than assuming that shared genre tags mean shared combat. Because Sword Sage has not been released, comparisons about its final balance or overall quality are premature; the most useful comparison is between its announced design and the specific mechanics of a game you already know.

Defense and response
Ask what the game expects when an attack comes in: dodge roll, guard, parry or deflect, or a directional evade followed by a counter. For Sword Sage, the listed signature is the last of these. For another title, check its own official description or gameplay materials rather than assuming a genre-wide standard.
Attack readability and timing
Consider how clearly attacks communicate what response they require, and how precisely players must time that response. Sword Sage specifically calls out high, middle, and low incoming attacks. That makes directional recognition part of its announced challenge, alongside timing; it does not establish how forgiving the final timing windows will be.

Boss learning curve
Ask whether bosses primarily test pattern recognition, reaction speed, weapon choice, or mastery of another system. In a hands-on preview published June 26, 2026, IGN’s Tristan Ogilvie reported needing a substantial part of his play time to learn the evade-and-counter system and continuing to struggle in some boss encounters, particularly when unblockable attacks appeared. He also described optional assistance intended to provide a gentler introduction. Those are impressions from the preview and its build, not a verdict on final difficulty or a confirmed list of launch accessibility settings. The available information supports a learning-curve question, but not a full assessment of whether the finished game will be opaque, punishing, or repetition-heavy. IGN’s hands-on preview, carried by Yahoo Tech, provides the attributed account.
Combat variety and management
Compare weapon types, weapon-specific skills, equipment or resource management, and any magic or ranged options. Sword Sage has announced three sword types, forging, mystical artifacts, and Taoist spells. The listing does not, by itself, establish how frequently players will switch weapons or use spells, or how those systems will balance against sword combat.

World and story
Separate a game’s visual inspirations from its mechanics. Sword Sage is pitched by its developer as Chinese folklore and mythology meeting science fiction, with mechanical wonders in a calamity-shaped ancient land. That setting may distinguish its tone from another game, but it does not tell you whether their combat or difficulty will feel alike.

As of the official storefront listings accessed October 7, 2026, Sword Sage: Awakening is listed for Windows PC on Steam and PlayStation 5 on the PlayStation Store. Steam says “Coming soon”; the PlayStation Store says “Release date to be determined.” Neither listing establishes an exact release date. The PlayStation Store page lists one player and says subtitles cover the main story and main characters. That is a limited description; it does not establish full-game captions.

Steam lists Windows 10 64-bit as the minimum operating system. Processor, memory, graphics, and storage requirements are still TBA; the recommended entry says an SSD is required. Until the remaining specifications are posted, there is not enough information to make a reliable PC hardware recommendation or predict performance. Steam’s system-requirements section is the relevant listing to check for updates.
