To move from a Windows laptop to a Chromebook, back up your local files separately from Chrome sync, sign in to the Chromebook with the same Google Account, then retrieve and check your files and test your essential apps. Chrome sync can restore selected browser data, but it does not transfer your Windows programs or sync your Downloads folder.

1. Check what is stored on the Windows laptop

Before setting up the Chromebook, review the Windows laptop’s Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, and any folders used by specific apps. Identify files that exist only on that computer, including work projects, exported email, photos, and files saved outside the usual folders. Google notes that Chrome sync does not include Downloads, so browser sync is not a substitute for backing up files. Google’s switching guide and sync guidance explain the distinction.

2. Sync Chrome data you want to keep

On the Windows laptop, open Chrome and sign in with the Google Account you plan to use on the Chromebook. Review Chrome’s sync settings so the data you want—such as bookmarks, passwords, history, and settings—is selected. Which items sync depends on those settings; on work or school devices, an administrator may disable sync. Downloads remain a separate file-backup task. Google’s Chrome sync help describes what may sync and the administrator limitation.

3. Choose how to transfer your files

Google recommends uploading files to Google Drive; a compatible USB thumb drive or external hard drive is an alternative. Another cloud provider may also work if you can access it from the Chromebook. Choose based on how much data you have, your internet connection, whether you need offline access, and whether the Chromebook can use your drive. Google’s switching guide outlines the transfer routes.

Google Drive You want files available online and can upload them from Windows. Confirm the upload finishes, check your available account storage, and make sure you can connect to the internet on the Chromebook. Google says each Google Account includes 15 GB at no charge, shared across Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos; the cited storage page does not state a publication year. Google Account storage details.
USB thumb drive or external hard drive You prefer offline copying or have more data than is convenient to upload. Check the Chromebook’s port, the drive’s capacity and filesystem, and whether the files themselves can be opened. Google lists FAT-family formats, exFAT, and NTFS among supported external-drive filesystems, but file-type support varies. Google’s external storage guidance.
Another cloud service Your files are already stored with a provider you use. Test access on the Chromebook, either in the Files app where supported or through the provider’s website, and try opening or downloading a representative file. Google’s switching guide recognizes other cloud storage options.

4. Set up the Chromebook with the intended account

Connect the Chromebook to the internet, choose your language and keyboard settings, accept the terms, and sign in with the Google Account you used for Chrome sync and, if applicable, Drive. Google lists internet access and a Google Account as setup requirements; Guest browsing is an alternative for using the device without signing in, not a way to restore your account data. After sign-in, bookmarks, extensions, and apps may appear according to account sync, availability, and any organization policies. Google’s Chromebook setup instructions.

5. Retrieve files and verify the transfer

If you used Google Drive

Open the Files app and locate your Drive content. Check that the expected folders and important files are present; do not assume that a file has uploaded merely because it remains on the Windows laptop.

If you used a USB drive or external hard drive

Connect the drive, open the Files app, and copy the files you want onto the Chromebook if you need local copies. Verify that important files open correctly. Google’s guidance lists supported external-drive filesystems, but not every file type is supported directly in ChromeOS. Google’s external storage help covers drive compatibility, and its file-type guidance covers supported files.

Keep the Windows laptop intact until you have checked the files you care about on the Chromebook or in the chosen cloud service. Only then decide whether to erase, recycle, or repurpose the old computer.

6. Test the apps and workflows you rely on

Moving files does not move installed Windows desktop programs, Windows settings, or software licenses automatically. Before making the Chromebook your only working device, test your essential tasks rather than assuming that a similarly named web app behaves the same way.

Microsoft Office documents

Google says many Microsoft Office files can be opened, edited, downloaded, or converted on a Chromebook. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides provide one route, and Microsoft 365 provides another; the available features depend on the app and file. Google’s cited Office guidance says those files cannot be opened in those apps while offline in the described situation, with only a basic editor available. Test representative documents—especially complex spreadsheets, macros, special fonts, and shared-work workflows—before switching fully.
