Birkenstock’s Regular footbed is intended for medium-to-wide feet; Narrow is intended for narrow-to-medium feet. Measure both feet, use Birkenstock’s chart or calculator as a starting point, then check the fit in the exact style you plan to wear: toes should not touch the footbed edge, and your foot should not spill over or ride up the side rims.
What Birkenstock Regular and Narrow mean
These are Birkenstock’s own width categories, not universal equivalents that translate exactly to another shoe brand’s sizing. Birkenstock’s US fit guide associates Regular with medium-to-wide feet and Narrow with narrow-to-medium feet. Its corresponding width equivalents are:

Measure both feet before choosing
Use Birkenstock’s US size chart or size calculator to compare your measurements with the brand’s ranges. The calculator asks for the length and width of each foot, so measure both rather than relying on one foot or a size you wear in another brand.

For example, Birkenstock’s US chart lists adult US size 8–8.5 at 261–265 mm in length. At that size, its listed width is 91–96 mm for Narrow and 97–105 mm for Regular. This is a chart example, not a substitute for measuring your feet and checking the fit.
If you use the printable template
Follow the instructions on Birkenstock’s printable foot-measurement template, and check its printed millimeter scale against a ruler. If the printout is scaled incorrectly, it is not a dependable measuring aid.

Check the fit in the sandal
- Start with the straps open. Birkenstock’s US fit guide recommends about ¼ inch of space around the foot. Your toes should not touch the edge of the footbed.
- Fasten the straps comfortably. Check that your foot has room without shifting over the footbed edge. Birkenstock’s UK FAQ says a narrow fit should still leave some space at the sides; the foot should not slide up the side rims.
- Compare how the foot sits. Noticeable space on either side may point toward Narrow, but the foot should remain contained by the footbed rather than riding on its rim.
- Adjust for comfort, not as a width test. If the straps remain too loose after adjustment, Birkenstock says extra holes can be punched. Strap tightness alone does not establish whether the footbed is too wide.
Birkenstock notes that its sandals can feel roomier than other shoes because the design allows toes to spread. A roomy feel by itself does not mean you have chosen the wrong width; use the footbed edges and the way your foot sits as checks.
Identify the width on a pair you already own
Look at the printed footprint on the footbed: a solid or filled footprint indicates Narrow, while an outlined footprint indicates Regular. Birkenstock’s UK FAQ uses this mark to distinguish the widths.

Allow time to adjust to a new pair
Birkenstock’s US fit guide recommends beginning with loose straps and wearing the sandals around the house for 1–2 hours at a time, then increasing wear gradually as your feet adjust. This is the brand’s recommendation, not a medically established rule.
