Choose a Chromebook if you expect to type often, work mainly in a browser, or need a laptop-style setup for school or office tasks. Choose an Android tablet if touch controls, portability, reading, video, calls, or casual note-taking matter more. If you want both kinds of use, compare a convertible Chromebook with a tablet plus keyboard—not just the device prices.
Start with how you will use it
Choose a Chromebook for regular typing and web-based work
A Chromebook is a laptop running ChromeOS, with a keyboard-first interface suited to browser-based work and document tasks. Google describes Chromebooks as laptops and points to Google productivity apps and Microsoft 365 applications. Many Microsoft Office files can be opened, edited, downloaded, and converted, according to Google’s Chromebook help. That makes a Chromebook a sensible fit for schoolwork, email, documents, and web workflows, but it does not mean every desktop program is available.
Chromebooks can also work offline when the apps and files are prepared for it. Google explains how to use Chromebook apps offline; check the specific apps and file formats you need rather than assuming your whole workflow will continue without internet.
Choose an Android tablet for touch-first use
An Android tablet is usually the more natural choice for browsing by touch, watching video, reading, video calls, drawing, and casual notes. A keyboard can make a larger tablet practical for light documents, but it does not automatically provide the same laptop-style workflow. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 buying guidance says a laptop is the safer choice for specialist desktop software, extensive file management, sustained creative work, or gaming; that is guidance, not a hard technical limit for every tablet.

Can an Android tablet replace a laptop?
It can replace one for a narrow set of needs: browsing, streaming, calls, notes, and occasional light document editing. It is less dependable as a full laptop substitute if your work depends on desktop-only software, frequent file organization, or long periods of keyboard use. A tablet keyboard may be sold separately, so compare the price and portability of the complete setup—including keyboard and stand—with a Chromebook.
A Chromebook can also take a tablet-like role if you choose touchscreen hardware designed to convert. Google’s instructions cover using the on-screen keyboard and handwriting on a Chromebook. Touch, stylus support, and comfort in tablet mode vary by model, so a convertible is a compromise rather than a guarantee of a tablet’s lightness or feel.

Check apps, accessories, offline use, and support
- Required apps: Confirm that each essential app runs on the exact device. Some Chromebooks support Android apps, but not all models do. The Chromium Projects say devices launched in or after 2019 generally support Android apps and maintain a list of ChromeOS systems supporting Android apps. Older devices require a model-specific check, and compatibility does not guarantee that every app behaves as you expect.
- Keyboard and stand: Check the exact listing for included accessories, layout, and regional package contents. For example, Android Central reports that the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11 includes a detachable keyboard and stand, with some configurations also including a USI Pen. Confirm the current bundle before buying.
- Offline tasks: Identify the apps that must work without a connection and verify their offline features. Also check where files will be stored and whether the document formats you use are supported.
- Screen and portability: Compare the actual size, weight, hinge or stand, and keyboard comfort of candidate devices. Category labels do not tell you how easy a specific model is to carry or use on your lap.
- Software support: Check the manufacturer’s current update policy for the exact tablet model. For a Chromebook, find its model-specific Auto Update Expiration date using Google’s ChromeOS Auto Update policy information. Do not infer a support period for one device from another.
- Total cost: Compare the same storage and memory configuration, plus any keyboard, case, or stylus you need. Prices, stock, and bundle contents change by retailer and region; there is no established category-wide price winner.

- Lenovo Chromebook Plus 2-in-1 Gen 10: Tom’s Guide describes it as a convertible with laptop, tablet, and tent modes. Its review covered a 14-inch touchscreen configuration with Intel Core 3, 8 GB RAM, and 128 GB storage. The review reported 8 hours 32 minutes of web-surfing battery testing, brightness below 200 nits, and 65% sRGB coverage for its test unit and method; those results should not be generalized to every configuration.
- Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11: Its detachable keyboard and stand illustrate why a Chromebook can combine laptop and tablet-like use. Verify the contents of the specific regional package.
- Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra: Its large 14.6-inch screen and 1.6-pound weight, as reported by Android Central, illustrate that a tablet can support keyboard-assisted productivity while being substantially larger than a compact reading tablet.
- Google Pixel Tablet: Android Central’s 2026 guide stated that regular Android updates would end after June 2026. Because update policy is date-sensitive, confirm Google’s current support information for the model before relying on that claim.
A quick decision checklist
- List the tasks you do most and estimate how often you will type for more than a few minutes at a time.
- Write down any must-have apps, desktop programs, file formats, or offline tasks; check each against the exact model.
- Decide whether you prefer a fixed keyboard, a detachable keyboard, or touch-only use, then price the complete setup.
- Compare the actual size, weight, screen, support policy, and regional configuration of your finalists.
- If neither category clearly fits, consider a convertible Chromebook for keyboard-led work with occasional tablet use, or a tablet with a keyboard for touch-led use and occasional typing.
