The safest way to move files between cloud services is to first check whether the destination has a migration tool for your exact source and account type. If it does not, downloading files and uploading them again can work for a small personal collection. In either case, verify files, folders, and collaborator access at the destination before deleting anything from the source.
Choose a transfer method for your accounts and data
Start by identifying the exact source and destination, including whether each is a personal account, a business tenant, a shared drive, or an object-storage bucket. Migration tools often support only certain combinations, and their exclusions differ.

| Situation | Good starting point | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| The destination offers a tool for your source and account type | Follow the provider’s documented migration workflow after checking eligibility, permissions, and exclusions. | For example, Google Workspace documents migration into Drive from Microsoft OneDrive, SharePoint Online, and Dropbox, but some content is not eligible. Google Workspace migration guidance. |
| A small personal collection with no suitable native tool | Download from the source and upload to the destination. | Allow for network time and enough local storage to stage the files. There is no single verified consumer workflow that applies to every provider pair. |
| A large Google Cloud Storage bucket-to-bucket transfer | Follow Google Cloud’s recommendation: use gcloud below 1 TB and Storage Transfer Service above 1 TB. |
This 1 TB guidance is specific to Cloud Storage buckets, not personal Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive accounts. Google Cloud bucket transfer guidance. |
| A live application depends on the bucket | Plan application changes and a cutover. A seed transfer followed by a final sync after pausing writes can reduce the final interruption. | Bucket names, IAM access, regions, and storage classes can affect the plan. Prepare before moving anything
- Inventory files and access. Note who owns important files, which folders are shared, and which collaborators need continued access. Do not assume the destination will reproduce the source’s permission model.
- Check capacity and scope. Estimate the data volume and decide whether to transfer everything or filter by user, folder, age, or size if your migration tool allows it. Google Workspace’s Drive migration service describes filtering old and large files. Google Workspace migration guidance.
- Identify special content. Flag provider-native documents, shortcuts, restricted files, version history, and metadata that matter to you. Confirm how the selected tool handles each one.
- Plan any interruption. If an application is actively reading or writing to an object-storage bucket, include a write pause, final sync, and application cutover in the plan. This is a workload concern, not a standard requirement for a personal file transfer. Google Cloud bucket transfer guidance.
Move a small personal collection
If neither provider offers a compatible migration tool, a local download-and-upload transfer is a straightforward option for a modest collection. It uses your internet connection to download the source files and then upload them to the destination.
Recommended Free Tools
- Make a list of the folders and files you intend to move, including any shared items that you have permission to download.
- Download the selected files from the source service, keeping their folder structure where the service allows it.
- Upload the files to the corresponding locations in the destination service.
- Review the uploaded folders and open representative files before removing the source copies.
This method can take time for large collections and may need enough free local storage to hold the downloaded files. Sharing links, ownership, versions, and other provider-specific details may not transfer with the files; check the services’ documentation for your exact workflow.

Check what may not carry over
Sharing, ownership, and inherited access
File content can arrive even when the source’s sharing arrangements do not. For example, Google says that moving My Drive content into a shared drive can remove access for people who are not members of that shared drive. In some move scenarios, permissions inherited from folders are not copied, and externally owned items cannot be moved into a shared drive under the documented conditions. Google may provide a CSV list of items that could not be moved. Google Drive guidance on moving files into shared drives.
Restricted content and shortcuts
Google Workspace lists restricted files or folders, content blocked from download, content created by external users outside the organization, and OneDrive folder shortcuts among examples that cannot be migrated into Drive through its documented migration service. These are examples for that particular path, not universal rules for all providers. Google Workspace migration guidance.

Metadata and versions
Metadata preservation depends on the transfer method. For Google Cloud Storage bucket transfers, Google documents preservation of user-created metadata and says the API can optionally preserve ACLs, encryption keys, storage class, temporary holds, and object creation time. Some metadata fields are not preserved. Google also describes using a manifest when all object versions must be transferred. These details apply to that Cloud Storage workflow; they should not be assumed for consumer file-storage services. Google Cloud bucket transfer guidance.

- Compare source and destination inventories using counts or reports when the tool provides them.
- Review skipped, failed, or unmovable items and decide how to handle each. For Google shared-drive moves, download the CSV item list when one is provided. Google Drive guidance on moving files into shared drives.
- Open representative files, including large files and important provider-native documents.
- Check folder organization and test access with the accounts or collaborators who need it.
- For a Cloud Storage workload, confirm that applications and relevant accounts can access the target, check applicable data access logs, and update applications to use the target bucket if its name changes. Google Cloud bucket transfer guidance.

Extra planning for Google Cloud Storage buckets
Bucket transfers differ from ordinary personal file moves: applications may depend on the bucket name, IAM permissions, or storage configuration. Google Cloud’s transfer documentation covers planning, validation, and seed-and-sync approaches. Its object-move guidance also notes that some storage classes may incur early-deletion charges when objects are removed. Check the conditions for your objects before deleting the originals.
