For more stable PS5 co-op, start with a wired Ethernet connection if practical. If you use Wi-Fi, move the console closer to the router and reduce obstructions. Check PlayStation Network service status before changing router settings: a speed test can show that the console reaches the internet, but it cannot establish that a particular game server or network route is stable.
Use a wired connection when you can
Ethernet avoids the wireless interference and physical obstacles that can affect Wi-Fi. It is the first connection change to try when co-op disconnects or feels inconsistent, though it cannot fix a PlayStation service outage, a game-server problem, or every issue on the route between your home and the game.

- Connect the PS5 to your router with a LAN (Ethernet) cable.
- On the console, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect. PlayStation documents this wired setup path in its internet connection guide.
The PS5 quick-start guide says the LAN cable for a wired connection is not included. If you need one, choose a cable long enough to reach the router safely; there is no special PS5-branded cable requirement established in the official guidance. See the PS5 manuals and quick-start guides.

Before changing advanced settings, test the simple physical fixes PlayStation recommends: move the PS5 closer to the router and remove objects that block the connection. Distance and obstacles can weaken a wireless link; a higher advertised Wi-Fi or broadband speed does not by itself guarantee lower game latency.

- Try the console in a location with a clearer path to the router.
- If setup fails, confirm you selected the correct network name (SSID), entered the password correctly, and used a security method supported by the network.
- If you cannot move the router or console, a wired cable run may be more practical than repeatedly changing wireless settings.

Check service and equipment before changing settings
If the console cannot connect to an online service, first check the PlayStation Network status page. If services are available, work from low-risk checks toward router-specific changes:

- Restart the PS5.
- Restart the router and modem. For the WS-116520-5 error, PlayStation advises waiting at least five minutes before restarting the router.
- Try Ethernet, if available, or improve Wi-Fi placement.
- Check whether router firmware is current; follow the router maker’s instructions.
These are among PlayStation’s recommendations for connection error WS-116520-5. An error-specific checklist is not proof that the same router change is necessary for every co-op problem. Consult PlayStation’s WS-116520-5 troubleshooting page.
Keep advanced network settings at their defaults unless you have a reason
PS5’s advanced settings include IP address, DHCP Host Name, DNS, MTU, proxy, and, on the CFI-7000 model group, Multi-Link Operation. These controls are not a universal lag-fix menu. PlayStation does not prescribe one custom DNS or MTU value for stable co-op; it advises people unfamiliar with the settings to consult their internet service provider or network administrator. Likewise, a successful console connection or internet speed test does not show whether a specific game server is healthy, or whether the route to it has consistent latency or packet loss. The official PlayStation material cited here does not establish a universal bandwidth, ping, jitter, or packet-loss threshold for PS5 online co-op. Do not treat Remote Play figures as co-op requirements: PlayStation’s separate Remote Play guidance lists at least 5 Mbps upload and download as standard and at least 15 Mbps in each direction for best performance, specifically for Remote Play—not a general online co-op minimum. Use port changes only for the documented error
Port forwarding is a targeted troubleshooting step, not a default setting every PS5 owner should apply. For WS-116520-5, PlayStation says, “If possible, try opening the following ports:” TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, and 3480; UDP 3478, 3479, and 49152 to 65535. The advice belongs to that error’s support page, which also directs users to their ISP for help opening ports. Router interfaces and network arrangements vary, so do not expose ports or change firewall rules without understanding the router-specific implications.

Another specific case: for the documented NW-102468-1 connection problem, PlayStation recommends removing a second NAT router if the network is using multiple NAT routers. Do not remove network equipment simply because a game feels slow; follow the relevant error guidance and contact your ISP or network administrator if router changes are unclear.

PS5 supports IPv6, but it does not support an IPv6-only network connection. The router must also allow IPv4. If your home network is configured as IPv6-only, ask the ISP or network administrator about enabling IPv4 compatibility. PlayStation documents this in its internet connection guidance.
