First decide what you mean by “building a game”

Google Sheets: strongest documented fit for interactive dashboards
Google describes Sheets Canvas as a way to turn rows and columns into dashboards and other interactive visual layouts. Its examples include heat maps, Kanban boards, galleries, and calendars. Google’s product announcement also describes creating a visual study tracker by describing the desired result to Gemini; that is Google’s description of the feature, not an independent test. Check eligibility before planning around Canvas
Anyone with a Google Account can create in Sheets, but Canvas itself requires an eligible Workspace or Google AI plan. Do not treat access to basic Sheets as proof that Canvas is included in your account. Google’s availability terms can change, so check the current Canvas help page before building a workflow around it.

Check whether your data and setup are supported
Canvas draws on a single sheet tab, and Google documents several limits: it is available in English; may be unavailable in the mobile app; does not yet support source tabs exceeding 1 million cells; and may not work with offline files, files stored by third parties, or sheets where download, copy, or print is disabled. Canva says all Canva users can access Sheets for free. Its product page highlights customizable charts, templates, connectors, collaboration, and import or export in CSV, XLSX, and PDF formats. Choose by the job, not by the “Excel alternative” label
- Choose Sheets Canvas if your data already lives in Google Sheets and your goal is an interactive dashboard or data mini-app—provided your account has an eligible plan and your language, device, file, and data-size conditions are supported.
- Choose Canva Sheets if charts, templates, visual styling, collaboration, or CSV/XLSX/PDF exchange matter more than an interactive Canvas over Google Sheets data.
- Do not choose either on the assumption that it is a dedicated game engine. If you need game mechanics and publishing rather than a spreadsheet-based prototype or scoreboard, these product descriptions do not answer which game-authoring tool to use.
What about other Excel alternatives?
LibreOffice Calc and other spreadsheet products may be worth evaluating, but current official documentation reviewed for this comparison does not establish their specific fit for building games or dashboards. Verify a candidate’s current capabilities, access terms, and export options directly with its publisher before relying on it for this use case.
