Storage Sense and duplicate-file finders solve different storage problems. Storage Sense automates cleanup of selected Windows categories, such as eligible temporary files and aged Recycle Bin contents. A duplicate finder scans locations you choose and reports files that match its own criteria. Neither tool replaces the other: use Storage Sense for routine cleanup, and a duplicate finder when you want to identify repeated personal files for review.
What Storage Sense can clean up
Storage Sense is Windows’ built-in tool for managing certain storage categories. Microsoft says that when it is enabled, its default behavior is to run when the device is low on disk space and clean unnecessary temporary files. It can also remove Recycle Bin contents after a period you configure. The setting is described as off by default, although Windows may turn it on to manage selected temporary files after low disk space if you have not interacted with it. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guide covers both Windows 10 and Windows 11; exact settings and labels can vary by release.

Storage Sense does not clear your Downloads folder by default. You can opt in and choose an age threshold, but check what is in Downloads before enabling that setting: files older than the threshold may be removed. You can also choose a schedule and adjust the Recycle Bin age threshold.
It is limited to the system drive
Storage Sense works on the Windows system drive, usually C:. Microsoft states: “Storage Sense works on your system drive only, which contains the Windows operating system and is usually referred to as C:.” For other drives, use the relevant storage settings or another cleanup approach.

Cloud files may become online-only, not deleted
Storage Sense can manage locally stored cloud content by making qualifying inactive files online-only. This frees local drive space without permanently deleting the cloud files; they can be downloaded again when there is an internet connection and enough disk space. Files marked “Always keep on this device” are exempt. For OneDrive cloud files, Microsoft documents a 30-day default inactivity period beginning with Windows 11 version 22H2. Do not assume that period applies to other Windows releases or cloud providers.
What a duplicate-file finder can clean up
A duplicate finder scans folders or other locations you select and identifies files according to the application’s matching rules. Some tools offer different modes for different file types. For example, dupeGuru’s documentation lists Standard, Music and Picture modes. Its quick-start guidance says to add folders, scan, inspect each result against the reference file, remove false matches from the results, and then send selected matches to the Recycle Bin. The guide is for dupeGuru version 4.0.3 and may not describe current behavior: dupeGuru quick start.

Matching rules vary between products. Czkawka’s project FAQ describes a duplicate-detection pipeline that filters by file size, prehash and full hash. It also says the GUI excludes the Windows Recycle Bin by default, while the command-line interface does not automatically apply the same exclusions. That difference illustrates why you should check the documentation for the specific tool and interface you use: Czkawka FAQ.
A duplicate result does not necessarily mean a file is safe to delete. Similar-looking images, earlier versions of a document and system files are not automatically duplicates; what a tool detects depends on its mode and comparison method. Treat the scan as a list to inspect, not a deletion command.

Which tool fits the storage problem?
| Your goal | Best starting point | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Automate cleanup of eligible temporary files and aged Recycle Bin contents | Storage Sense | Runs according to its schedule or low-space behavior and selected category settings. |
| Find repeated personal files in folders you choose | Duplicate-file finder | Scans selected locations using that product’s matching rules and presents results for review. |
| Review large, unused, synced or temporary items before removing them | Windows Cleanup recommendations | Suggests categories and lets you choose what to remove. Microsoft’s guide to freeing drive space explains the options. |
| Keep infrequently used personal files while freeing local space | External storage or OneDrive Files On-Demand | Moving files to an external drive takes them off the PC; Files On-Demand can keep cloud files as smaller local placeholders. |
When assessing a duplicate finder, check what it matches (for example, names, file contents or media similarity, if offered), which locations it can scan, how it handles excluded or system locations, how it groups results, and whether removal sends files to the Recycle Bin or deletes them permanently. These details are product-specific.
A safer way to free up space
- Find out what is using space. Check Windows storage settings and Cleanup recommendations to see whether the pressure comes from temporary files, large personal files, cloud-synced content or repeated copies. Microsoft describes these options in its drive-space guide.
- Use Storage Sense for the categories it manages. If you enable Downloads cleanup, inspect the folder and confirm the age threshold first.
- Run a duplicate scan only when you are looking for repeated files. Start with folders containing your personal files rather than scanning the entire drive by default. Inspect every group against the file you intend to keep before removing anything; where supported, send selected items to the Recycle Bin rather than deleting them permanently.
- Move files you want to retain if cleanup is not the answer. Microsoft suggests moving infrequently used personal files to an external drive or USB storage, or using OneDrive Files On-Demand. An external drive must be connected to access its files; downloading cloud-held files requires a network connection.
- Be careful with previous Windows installations. Removing Windows.old or other previous-installation files removes the option to go back to the earlier Windows version, according to Microsoft’s drive-space guidance.
There is no reliable, evidence-based amount of space that either approach typically recovers: the result depends on what is on the drive and which items you choose to remove or make online-only.
