To move bitcoin safely, create a Bitcoin receive address in your hardware-wallet app, verify the complete address on the device’s own screen, and use that address for a withdrawal on your exchange’s native Bitcoin network. Send a small test transaction first; after it appears and reaches the required confirmation level, send the rest. Keep your recovery backup offline throughout: nobody at an exchange or wallet company needs it.

What you need before starting

Prepare the hardware wallet, its official desktop or mobile software, access to your exchange account, and a secure way to record the transaction ID. Do not begin a large withdrawal until the device has been initialized and you can verify an address on its physical display.

  • A genuine Bitcoin-capable hardware wallet obtained through a trustworthy sales channel. Inspect packaging and device prompts, and initialize it yourself rather than accepting a preconfigured wallet.
  • The manufacturer’s current wallet application, such as Trezor Suite or Ledger Wallet, installed from the manufacturer’s official source.
  • An exchange account that is allowed to withdraw BTC, with any identity, security, or account-age requirements completed.
  • Your exchange’s authenticator, passkey, email, or other required security method.
  • Offline storage for the recovery backup. Never photograph it, put it in cloud notes, or type it into a website, support chat, or exchange form.

A hardware wallet keeps signing keys away from an exchange account, but it does not make an incorrect withdrawal reversible. The exchange sends the transaction; the device confirms that the destination address you are using is the one displayed to you.

Step 1: Initialize the hardware wallet

Create the wallet on the device

Follow the manufacturer’s current setup instructions. When the setup offers a choice, create a new wallet directly on the hardware device so the recovery backup is generated offline. Write the words down using the manufacturer’s instructions and store the record offline in a place protected from theft, fire, moisture, and unauthorized access.

The recovery backup is the method for restoring the wallet if the device is lost or damaged. It is not a password that support staff should inspect. Anyone who obtains it can generally attempt to control the assets restored from it, so treat requests for it as a likely scam.

Install the Bitcoin account

Open the wallet application, connect or unlock the device, and add a Bitcoin account. A wallet may support several Bitcoin address formats or account types; use the Bitcoin account that the application identifies as BTC. Do not assume that an address for Bitcoin Cash or another asset can receive bitcoin.

Confirm the device is ready

Before copying an address, make sure the device is communicating with the official application and that no warning indicates a locked, uninitialized, or recovery-only state. If the device was supplied with a recovery phrase, PIN, or prewritten address, stop and contact the manufacturer through its official support channel rather than using that information.

Step 2: Generate and verify a Bitcoin receive address

Open Receive in the wallet app

  1. Open the Bitcoin account in Trezor Suite, Ledger Wallet, or the relevant official application.
  2. Choose Receive and request a new address. Wallet software often supplies a fresh address for each deposit; using a fresh one improves transaction organization and does not change your ownership of the account.
  3. Copy the address shown by the application, but do not trust the computer or phone screen alone.

Verify the complete address on the physical device

Select the application’s option to show, confirm, or verify the address on the hardware wallet. Compare the entire address on the device screen with the address you plan to paste into the exchange. Scroll through every character if the device requires it. A malware-infected computer can replace a copied address; the device screen is the independent check.

If even one character differs, stop. Do not edit the string by hand. Generate or copy the address again and repeat the device verification. Never approve an address that you have not checked on the hardware wallet itself.

Check the asset and account

Confirm that the receive screen says Bitcoin (BTC) and that it belongs to the intended Bitcoin account. Sending an asset to an address generated for another cryptocurrency can make the funds inaccessible. Keep the verified address available only long enough to complete the withdrawal, and consider using a fresh address for a later transfer.

Step 3: Start the withdrawal on the exchange

Open the exchange’s BTC withdrawal form

Exchange labels vary. Look for Send, Withdraw, or Transfer, choose BTC, and select the external-wallet option if the exchange distinguishes it from an internal transfer. On Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, and similar services, the exact button names and approval screens can change, so read each field rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Paste the verified address

Paste the address that you verified on the hardware-wallet display. Check the first and last characters as a quick visual check, then rely on the full device comparison you already completed. If the exchange asks you to label or whitelist the address, use a clear label such as “my Bitcoin hardware wallet”; a label is only for your records and does not validate the destination.

Select the native Bitcoin network

For BTC, choose the Bitcoin network. Ledger’s network guidance expresses the rule as “BTC → Bitcoin network.” Do not choose another network because it shows a lower fee or faster estimate. An alternative network may represent a different asset or a wrapped version that your Bitcoin account cannot use; sending through the wrong network can permanently lose funds.

Withdrawal field What to select or check Why it matters
Asset Bitcoin (BTC) Prevents sending a different coin to a Bitcoin account.
Destination The address verified on the hardware-wallet screen Protects against copying an altered address.
Network Bitcoin Matches a native Bitcoin receiving account.
Amount Test amount first, then the planned balance Limits the exposure of a first-time mistake.
Fee and total Review the exchange’s current charge and the amount the recipient will receive Exchanges may deduct a withdrawal charge in addition to network costs.

Review and pass the exchange’s security checks

Before submitting, read the exchange summary slowly: asset, destination address, network, amount, fee, and final receive amount. Complete any email link, authenticator code, passkey, or withdrawal-confirmation step. These controls are managed by the exchange and may change with its security policy, account history, jurisdiction, or recent password changes.

Stop before submission if the address or network is not exactly what you expect. If the exchange displays a warning about a hold, address allowlist, or review period, follow that notice rather than trying to bypass it.

Step 4: Send a small test transaction

For a first transfer, a newly initialized wallet, or a large balance, withdraw a small amount that is sufficient to cover the exchange’s minimum and any fee. Ledger advises sending a small amount first and verifying receipt before sending larger amounts. A test does not eliminate every risk, but it limits the cost of a wrong address, wrong network, or misunderstood exchange field.

  1. Submit the small withdrawal after checking the address and Bitcoin network again.
  2. Save the exchange receipt and transaction ID (TXID) immediately.
  3. Open the hardware-wallet application and watch for the incoming transaction. It may first appear as unconfirmed.
  4. Wait for at least one blockchain confirmation, or for the confirmation level required by the exchange or your own security policy, before moving the remaining balance.

Trezor’s recommended flow is to make a small test transfer, wait for confirmation, and then transfer the remainder. The test should be visible in the intended Bitcoin account, not merely in an exchange’s “sent” history.

Step 5: Send the remaining bitcoin

Once the test has arrived and reached the required confirmation level, create a second withdrawal for the remaining amount. Do not assume a saved exchange address is still safe without checking it again.

  1. Open the same Bitcoin account and generate or display the receive address.
  2. Verify the complete address on the hardware wallet’s physical screen.
  3. Paste it into the exchange’s BTC withdrawal form and select the Bitcoin network.
  4. Review the amount, fee, destination, and final receive amount.
  5. Approve the exchange’s security challenge and save the new TXID.

For a balance that would cause serious financial harm if delayed or mishandled, split the remainder into stages. Each additional transaction has its own fee, but staging gives you another opportunity to detect a problem before the entire balance is exposed.

Fees, timing, and confirmations

There is no single fee or completion time that applies to every exchange and transaction. An exchange can charge its own withdrawal fee, while the Bitcoin transaction also depends on the fee rate selected by the sender and current network activity. The amount shown in the live withdrawal form is the authoritative estimate for that submission.

Stage What you may see What it means
Exchange review Pending, processing, security review, or a temporary hold The exchange has not necessarily broadcast the transaction yet. Check account notices and security requirements.
Broadcast A TXID and an unconfirmed transaction The transaction has been sent to the Bitcoin network but is not yet in a block.
First confirmation The wallet shows one confirmation Miners have included the transaction in a block. Reorganizations are possible, so some services wait for more.
Additional confirmations The confirmation count increases Confidence that the payment is settled rises. Required counts vary by wallet, exchange, and policy.

Trezor notes that confirmation times vary with the sender’s fee and how busy the network is. Binance and other exchanges can require a different number of confirmations for crediting or releasing funds. Use the live status shown by your exchange and wallet rather than an advertised universal number.

Monitor the transfer with the TXID

The TXID lets you follow the transaction independently of the exchange interface. Check it in the exchange’s withdrawal history, the hardware-wallet application, or a reputable Bitcoin block explorer. Confirm that the explorer shows the same destination address, amount, and network you approved.

If the exchange shows a withdrawal as complete but no TXID exists, contact exchange support through its official channel and ask whether the transaction has been broadcast. If a TXID exists, propagation and confirmation are network matters; keep watching the transaction status rather than submitting a duplicate withdrawal.

Troubleshooting and recovery decisions

The address on the device does not match the exchange

Do not submit the withdrawal. Clear the exchange field, copy the address again, and verify it on the device. If the discrepancy continues, close the exchange session and wallet application, restart them from official software, and generate a new receive address.

You selected the wrong network but have not submitted

Cancel or go back to the network field and choose Bitcoin. Recheck the asset and destination before continuing. Never accept a cheaper or faster network merely because the form highlights it.

You already sent through the wrong network

Stop making additional transfers and preserve the exchange receipt, destination, amount, and TXID. Contact the exchange and the hardware-wallet manufacturer promptly through their official support channels. Recovery depends on the asset, network, destination format, and whether the receiving software supports that network; it is not guaranteed.

The exchange withdrawal is pending

Read the withdrawal record for a security hold, address-allowlist delay, account review, minimum amount, or scheduled processing period. If there is no TXID, the exchange may not have broadcast the transaction. Do not provide your recovery backup to support while asking for help.

The wallet does not show the deposit

Check that you are viewing the correct Bitcoin account and that the verified receive address belongs to it. Use the TXID to determine whether the transaction is unconfirmed, confirmed, or sent to a different address. Allow time for network propagation and the confirmation threshold used by the application.

You are uneasy about a large transfer

Send another small test or divide the balance into several withdrawals. Confirm each stage before starting the next one, and retain every TXID with your records.

Someone asks for the recovery phrase

Do not share it. Exchange staff, wallet support, moderators, and legitimate troubleshooting pages do not need the words to verify a withdrawal. End the conversation and report the request through the company’s official support process.

How to choose a hardware wallet for Bitcoin storage

If you are still selecting a device, evaluate the workflow rather than relying on a security ranking that has not been independently established. The important question is whether you can verify what you are signing and recover the wallet without exposing the backup.

Evaluation axis Questions to ask
Bitcoin support and address verification Does the device support BTC and display the complete receive address for independent checking?
Backup and recovery Does the setup explain how the device creates, records, and restores its recovery backup?
Software design claims What does the manufacturer document about open-source or closed-source components, and can you assess those claims?
Desktop and mobile usability Can you reliably locate Receive, verify an address, approve a transaction, and inspect confirmations?
Connection methods Does it use USB, Bluetooth, or another connection that fits your threat model and devices?
Purchase authenticity Can you obtain it through a trustworthy channel and initialize it yourself without accepting a supplied recovery phrase?

Trezor’s Safe 3 is one example of a Bitcoin-capable hardware wallet documented by its manufacturer, but model availability, software support, and regional purchasing conditions can change. Whatever device you choose, the address-on-device check and offline recovery practice matter more than a product name alone.

A concise final checklist

  • The wallet was initialized by you using current manufacturer instructions.
  • The recovery backup is offline and has never been entered into a website, exchange, or support chat.
  • The receive address belongs to the intended BTC account.
  • The complete address was verified on the physical hardware-wallet display.
  • The exchange withdrawal asset is BTC and the selected network is Bitcoin.
  • The amount and fee were reviewed before approval.
  • A small test arrived and reached the required confirmation level.
  • The remaining transfer was rechecked, and its TXID was saved.
