The safe answer is not a one-click clone. Installing GrapheneOS replaces the phone’s existing operating system and wipes its data, so make and verify backups before unlocking the bootloader or flashing anything. Then migrate in three separate tracks: reinstall the apps, restore their private data through Seedvault or each app’s own export/transfer system, and copy documents, photos, downloads and other shared files separately.
Seedvault is included with GrapheneOS, but it must be enabled and its app-data restoration depends on the app. Google Play, if you choose to install the sandboxed version, can help apps run; signing in does not recreate Google’s device backup. Keep the old phone intact until you have tested the new installation.

What actually moves to a new GrapheneOS phone?
A phone contains several kinds of data that are handled differently during migration. Treating them as one backup set is the most common cause of missing messages, accounts or files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Data category | What to do | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Installed apps | Reinstall them on the new device, using the same app source or an app’s documented transfer process. | Copying an APK does not necessarily copy the app’s database, login state, encryption keys or settings. |
| App-private data | Try Seedvault restoration, then follow the app’s own backup or migration procedure when available. | There is no established universal list showing that Seedvault restores every app correctly. |
| Shared files | Copy photos, videos, downloads, documents and other user files separately to a computer or external storage. | Shared storage is not the same as an app’s private storage. |
| Accounts and security credentials | Sign in again and use each service’s export, transfer or recovery workflow. Test authenticators and messaging accounts before retiring the old phone. | A restored app package does not prove that its account session or keys were restored. |
| Google-dependent features | Install sandboxed Google Play in the profile where an app needs it, if you want to use those services. | Google Play availability is not Google device-backup restoration. |
GrapheneOS documents that app-private storage is isolated from other apps and is cleared when an app is uninstalled. Ordinary shared files are a separate category, which is why a complete migration requires both an app-data plan and a file-copy plan.

Before you install: make a backup you can actually restore
Do not begin by unlocking the old phone. The installation process is destructive: the existing operating system is replaced and existing device data is wiped. Finish the following preparation while the old phone still works.
- List irreplaceable data. Include photos and videos, downloaded documents, local music, notes, recordings, messaging history, authenticator accounts, password-manager vaults, wallets and any files stored inside app-specific folders.
- Update and open important apps. An app may display its export or transfer option only after it is updated or after you sign in. Read the app developer’s current instructions before you wipe the source device.
- Create an app-level backup where one exists. Messaging and secure-communications apps can use their own encrypted backup or device-to-device transfer. A GrapheneOS forum response specifically cites Signal and Molly as examples of apps for which an app-level backup is prudent. That is practical community guidance, not a complete compatibility guarantee.
- Copy shared files independently. Connect the old phone to a computer, use removable USB storage, or use another storage method you can inspect. Open a few copied files from the destination to confirm that the transfer is readable.
- Enable and run Seedvault. GrapheneOS includes Seedvault as an operating-system backup service, but it is not necessarily active until you enable it. Configure a destination and complete a backup before installation.
- Keep more than one copy of critical data. A single phone, drive or cloud account is a single point of failure. At minimum, keep the old phone untouched plus one independent copy of essential files until the new setup is verified.
- Prepare the installation equipment. The official web installation process requires a USB cable connecting the phone to a computer. Use a cable that supports data, not only charging, and confirm that the computer recognizes the device before starting.
If your only copy of a file or key is on the old phone, stop at this stage. Do not unlock or flash until you can open that copy somewhere else.
Use Seedvault as one restoration route, not a complete phone clone
GrapheneOS describes Seedvault as an encrypted backup service. It can create local backups and can use cloud storage providers exposed through a storage-provider app. The service can also restore app data when apps are reinstalled. The GrapheneOS FAQ puts the important qualification plainly: “GrapheneOS includes Seedvault as an OS backup service which must be explicitly enabled, and it has the option to automatically restore app data when an app is reinstalled, so it wouldn’t lose track of it being the same profile.”

Choose a destination
A local destination keeps the backup under your control and does not require a network account during restore. A USB-C flash drive or other external USB storage is a reasonable local option, provided the phone, drive and any adapter are compatible. GrapheneOS’s feature description supports local backups; it does not certify every drive or adapter.
A cloud destination can make the backup available when the new phone is elsewhere, but it depends on a storage-provider app and on access to that provider during restoration. Check that you know the provider credentials and that the account can retrieve the backup before you wipe the source phone.

| Cloud destination through a storage-provider app | You already use a supported provider and want the backup available over the network. | Confirm the provider app is available on the new profile, sign-in works and the backup is visible for download. |
| App-specific export or transfer | The app contains valuable conversations, keys, profiles or databases and documents its own migration process. | Complete the app’s export or transfer and verify that you can open or import it on another device. |
| Manual shared-file copy | Photos, videos, downloads, documents and other ordinary user files. | Open representative files from the destination and compare folder contents with the old phone. |
Why Seedvault may not restore an app
App-private data is controlled by the app and isolated from other apps. Seedvault can offer restoration when an app is reinstalled, but the reviewed GrapheneOS material does not provide a current, exhaustive per-app restore matrix. Some apps may exclude data, require a separate export, bind keys to the original installation, or require a fresh sign-in. A successful Seedvault backup therefore proves that a backup was created; it does not prove that every application will return to its previous state.
Do not uninstall an app on the old phone while testing. GrapheneOS documents that uninstalling clears that app’s private storage. If you remove it before you have imported or verified its data elsewhere, you may remove the only remaining copy of its local database.
Handle apps with their own migration systems
For every app that matters, look for an in-app command such as export, backup, transfer to a new device, link a new device, or restore from file. Use the developer’s current instructions because menus, encryption requirements and supported Android versions change.
Messaging and secure-communications apps
Messaging databases often contain encryption keys and attachments that are not ordinary shared files. Use the app’s supported device-to-device transfer or encrypted backup before you begin GrapheneOS installation. The GrapheneOS forum discussion that mentions Signal and Molly is a reminder to use app-level procedures; it is not evidence that either app, or every version of either app, will always restore through Seedvault.
Authenticators, passkeys and password managers
Plan these before other apps because losing a second factor can lock you out of the accounts you need for the rest of the migration. Export authenticator entries using the authenticator’s documented method, move passkeys through the provider’s supported process, and verify that your password-manager vault opens on the new profile. Keep recovery codes available offline while you test.

Apps with downloaded or offline content
Offline maps, media libraries, game saves and editing projects may be stored in app-private directories even when they appear to be “files.” Check whether the app has an export function or a documented backup folder. Copying a similarly named folder from shared storage does not establish that the app can read it after reinstalling.
Copy photos, documents and other shared files separately
Shared storage includes the ordinary user-facing material people expect to see in a file manager: camera photos and videos, screenshots, downloads, documents, recordings and exported archives. Copy these files independently of Seedvault.
- On the old phone, review the folders you actually use rather than relying only on a camera folder. Include Downloads, Documents, screenshots, recordings, exported chats and any custom folders.
- Connect the phone to a computer with a data-capable USB cable and select the phone’s file-transfer mode if Android presents a USB choice.
- Copy the folders to a destination with enough capacity. If you use external USB storage, confirm that it is recognized by both the old and new phone or by the computer you will use as an intermediary.
- Open sample photos, videos, PDFs and archives from the copied destination. A transfer that reports “complete” can still leave unreadable files or an incomplete folder selection.
- After GrapheneOS is installed, copy the verified files into the new phone’s shared storage. Reopen them from the new device and check that the apps you use can see them.
Do not confuse a file’s presence with an app’s private database. An exported chat file may be useful, but it is not automatically an importable message history; follow the receiving app’s import instructions.
Install GrapheneOS only after the source phone is protected
Use GrapheneOS’s official web installation instructions for the supported device and current installer flow. The migration-critical order is simple:
- Finish Seedvault and app-specific backups on the old operating system.
- Copy and verify shared files outside the phone.
- Confirm that you can access accounts, recovery codes and backup destinations without relying on the old phone alone.
- Connect the phone to the computer with the required USB data cable.
- Unlock and flash GrapheneOS only when you accept that the existing device data will be wiped.
- Complete the initial GrapheneOS setup, create the profile in which you will use the apps, and restore data before changing or deleting the old backups.
Because the wipe is part of installation, there is no safe “try it first and back out” path that preserves the old operating system’s data automatically. Your backups are the rollback plan.

Restore in a controlled order
Restoring everything at once makes failures hard to diagnose. A staged restore lets you identify whether a missing item is an app issue, a Seedvault issue or a file-copy issue.
- Establish the destination. Connect the local storage or install the storage-provider app needed to reach the Seedvault backup. Confirm that the backup is visible before proceeding.
- Restore or reinstall a small group of apps. Start with low-risk apps, then move to messaging, finance, work and authentication apps after you understand the restore behavior.
- Let Seedvault restore app data where supported. Reinstall the app in the same user or work profile and follow the restore prompts. If the app opens empty, do not erase the old phone; switch to the app’s documented export or transfer process.
- Run app-specific imports. Import encrypted backups, scan transfer QR codes or complete device-linking steps exactly as the app instructs.
- Copy shared files. Move verified photos, documents and downloads after the destination’s file access is working.
- Sign in and test. Check account access, message history, attachments, authenticator codes, password-vault access, notifications and any hardware-dependent feature you use.
Verify before you erase or reset the old phone
Use the old phone as a reference and test the new one deliberately. A practical verification checklist includes:
- Recent and older photos and videos open correctly.
- Important documents, downloads and recordings are present.
- Messaging history, attachments and contact lists are available where expected.
- Authenticator codes generate correctly and recovery codes are stored safely.
- Password-manager and passkey access works.
- Banking, work, travel and other high-consequence apps can sign in and perform a non-destructive test.
- Notifications, calls, contacts and Bluetooth accessories behave as needed.
- App-specific backups are stored outside the old phone.
Only after these checks should you factory-reset, trade in or repurpose the old device. Retain the verified backup for as long as your normal retention policy requires.
Where sandboxed Google Play fits
GrapheneOS does not bundle Google apps or services. It provides a compatibility layer that lets you install official Google Play releases as ordinary sandboxed apps in the user or work profile where you install them. Google account sign-in is optional overall, but some account-dependent app features and Play Store downloads require it.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
This can solve an app-compatibility problem without changing the backup plan. Installing Play may let an app run or download updates; it does not import the old phone’s Google device backup, restore every app-private database or recreate every login session. Keep Seedvault and app-level exports as separate migration tools.

Troubleshooting common migration failures
The new app is installed but empty
That usually means the app’s private data was not restored, the app does not support the backup method, or it requires its own import. Leave the old phone untouched, locate the app’s official transfer or export instructions, and retry from the app-level backup.
Seedvault cannot find the backup
Check that Seedvault was enabled on the source phone, that the destination is connected or that the storage-provider app is installed and signed in, and that you are restoring in the intended user or work profile. Do not assume that a backup made in one profile will appear automatically in another.
Files are missing even though apps restored
App restoration and shared-file copying are separate operations. Recheck the source folders, copy the missing files from the verified external destination, and confirm that the new profile has permission to access them.
An app demands a new sign-in or second factor
Restoration does not guarantee that session tokens or hardware-bound keys transfer. Use the service’s account-recovery or device-enrollment process and keep the old device available until the new login is confirmed.
The USB connection fails during installation or copying
Try another data-capable USB cable or port, remove hubs where possible, and confirm that the computer recognizes the phone before restarting the installation flow. Do not interpret a charging connection as proof that file transfer or flashing will work.
Bottom line
Moving to GrapheneOS without Google backup is reliable when you treat it as a planned migration rather than a clone: enable and test Seedvault, use each important app’s own transfer method, copy shared files independently, install GrapheneOS only after the source is backed up, and verify every critical account and file before wiping the old phone. Sandboxed Google Play is optional app compatibility—not a substitute for those backups.
