Inkscape is the best free desktop alternative to Illustrator for most vector illustration, logo, and SVG work. It is free and open source, runs on GNU/Linux, Windows, and macOS, and uses SVG as its native format. For browser-based product or interface design, Penpot is the stronger free-first choice because it combines vector editing with real-time collaboration, unlimited projects and collaborators, version history, inspect mode, and self-hosting. Figma is useful when its hosted collaboration model fits your team and the Starter plan’s limits are sufficient.
These tools are not interchangeable, and none should be assumed to reproduce every Illustrator effect, plug-in, typographic behavior, or editable layer perfectly. Choose by workflow, then run representative files through a short conversion and handoff test before moving an active project.

Which free Illustrator alternative should you choose?
Start with the kind of work you actually do:
- Illustrations, logos, icons, diagrams, and production SVGs: choose Inkscape.
- Collaborative UX, product, and interface design: choose Penpot when open standards or self-hosting matter.
- Hosted team design with a familiar collaborative canvas: evaluate Figma Starter, but check whether its file and page limits fit your team.
- A polished desktop editor that is not free: Affinity Designer is an adjacent option, not a free recommendation; the official page lists a one-time US$164.99 Version 2 Universal Licence.
The practical distinction is local desktop editing versus browser-centered collaboration. Inkscape gives you a downloadable application and local files. Penpot and Figma organize work around online projects and shared canvases, with different approaches to hosting, limits, and ownership.
Inkscape: the best free desktop replacement
What it is
Inkscape is a free, open-source vector editor maintained by its project community. The project describes it as a “powerful, free design tool.” It is available for GNU/Linux, Windows, and macOS, so a mixed desktop team can use the same general application across those operating systems.

Why it fits illustration and logo work
Inkscape’s main format is SVG, the open vector format used widely for web graphics, icons, diagrams, and scalable brand artwork. A native SVG workflow keeps paths, fills, strokes, gradients, clipping, and other vector objects editable instead of flattening them into a bitmap. You can work locally without a recurring subscription or an always-online browser session.
The editor is a sensible starting point for single designers, students, small studios, and teams that need repeatable SVG production. It also suits workflows in which the final asset is delivered as an SVG, PDF, PNG, or another common interchange format rather than as a proprietary application file.
Documented file interchange
Inkscape documents import and export support for AI, EPS, PDF, PS, and PNG in addition to SVG. That makes it useful when a client sends artwork in a mixed set of formats or when a finished logo must be supplied to several downstream systems. File-format support is not the same as complete feature parity: a document can open successfully while still changing an effect, text object, blend, linked asset, or appearance.

One-click scans. No signup required.
What to test before switching
Open copies of real projects rather than a simple test icon. Check text wrapping and font substitution, clipping paths, gradients and transparency, strokes aligned to paths, live effects, embedded or linked images, symbols, masks, spot colors, and PDF output. Compare both the visual result and the editability of the imported objects. Keep the original Illustrator file untouched and preserve a version of the converted SVG or PDF with a clear filename.
Offline and ownership advantages
A local editor is valuable when an organization cannot place source artwork in a hosted workspace, when internet access is unreliable, or when files must remain on an internal storage system. You control where the SVGs, fonts, exports, and backups live. That responsibility also means you must create your own backup, versioning, font-management, and review procedures.
Penpot: the free collaborative option for product and interface design
Core workflow
Penpot is aimed at browser-based product, interface, and UX work. Its official feature description includes advanced vector editing, real-time collaboration, unlimited projects and collaborators, version history, and inspect mode. Those capabilities address the handoff problem in which designers, developers, product managers, and reviewers need to look at the same source and inspect dimensions or properties without exchanging exported screenshots.

Why open source and self-hosting matter
Penpot documents self-hosting options as well as its hosted service. Self-hosting can be relevant to organizations that need data to remain in a controlled environment, have an established identity and backup system, or want to manage upgrades on their own schedule. Hosted use removes that infrastructure work but makes account access, service availability, and the provider’s current terms part of your workflow.
Free-plan status
In an announcement dated September 11, 2026, Penpot said its offering remains free, unlimited, and open source while adding a paid Enterprise layer. The free positioning therefore does not mean every organizational governance feature is included. Confirm which administrative, support, security, or compliance capabilities are reserved for Enterprise before planning a regulated or large-scale deployment.
Best uses
Choose Penpot when several people need to edit or review interface work at the same time, when inspect mode is part of developer handoff, or when self-hosting is a requirement. It is less naturally suited than a dedicated desktop illustration tool to a solitary artist who mainly produces complex print illustrations or a library of local SVG assets.
Figma: collaborative, but verify the Starter limits
What the free tier provides
Figma’s official pricing and FAQ pages describe a free Starter tier. The FAQ states that Starter allows unlimited files in Drafts and collaboration on up to three files, with three pages per file. Those limits are material for a team: a project may need to stay in Drafts, be consolidated into fewer pages, or move to a paid plan as the number of shared files grows.
When Starter is a good fit
Starter can work for an individual learning the tool, a small team prototyping a limited number of products, or a short project whose file structure fits the stated allowance. It gives you a hosted collaborative canvas rather than a local-first editing model, so decide whether that account dependency and storage arrangement match your organization’s policies.
Planning around changing terms
Plan limits and definitions can change. Check the current pricing and FAQ pages immediately before a migration, and record the date and terms your team accepted. Count shared files and pages, not only the number of people invited, because those are the constraints explicitly described for Starter.

Affinity Designer: capable, but not a free alternative
Affinity Designer belongs in a broader comparison of Illustrator replacements, but it should not be listed as free on the evidence available here. The official page identifies a Version 2 Universal Licence priced at a one-time US$164.99. That is a perpetual-style purchase rather than a subscription, yet it still places the product outside a strict “free alternatives” list. Pricing and offers can change, so verify the current listing if a paid desktop option is acceptable.
Feature and fit comparison
| Option | Best fit | Cost or plan evidence | Working model | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inkscape | Illustration, logos, icons, diagrams, and production SVGs | Free and open source | Desktop application for GNU/Linux, Windows, and macOS | Imports and exports several formats, but complex Illustrator features may not transfer faithfully |
| Penpot | Collaborative UX, product, and interface design | Free offering described as unlimited; a paid Enterprise layer was announced on September 11, 2026 | Browser-centered collaboration, with hosted and self-hosting options documented | Confirm which governance and organizational features require Enterprise |
| Figma Starter | Small hosted design teams and individual projects | Free Starter tier; FAQ states unlimited files in Drafts and collaboration on up to three files with three pages per file | Hosted collaborative canvas | Recheck current limits before committing to a team migration |
| Affinity Designer | Paid desktop vector design without a subscription commitment | Official page lists US$164.99 one-time for the Version 2 Universal Licence | Desktop application | Not free under the listed price |
Choose by the job, not by the feature checklist
For logos and brand assets
Use Inkscape when the deliverables are editable SVGs, PDF proofs, PNG exports, and other standard files. Establish a document template with the correct page size, color assumptions, bleed requirements, and naming convention. If a printer or client requires an Illustrator-specific editable file, confirm that requirement before converting; an SVG or PDF may preserve appearance without preserving the expected editing model.
For web icons and SVG systems
Inkscape’s SVG-first workflow is the clearest match. Keep a clean source SVG, export optimized copies only after review, and inspect the result in the target browser or application. Test strokes, text conversion, masks, and viewport dimensions because an SVG that looks correct in the editor can behave differently when embedded elsewhere.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For UX and product teams
Penpot is the strongest fit when simultaneous editing, version history, inspect mode, and unlimited project or collaborator capacity are central to the free offering. Figma is an alternative when your team already prefers its hosted workflow and can stay within Starter’s three-file, three-page collaboration allowance.
For sensitive or regulated work
Compare storage and administration before comparing drawing tools. Inkscape keeps files under your control by default. Penpot documents self-hosting, which can let an organization place the service inside its own infrastructure. The available Figma material describes a hosted plan; obtain your organization’s security and retention approval before uploading source files.
A safe migration process from Illustrator
Switching tools is less risky when you treat it as a controlled file-handoff exercise rather than a one-click conversion.

- Inventory your real files. Select a representative set: a simple logo, a typography-heavy layout, an illustration with effects and transparency, a file containing linked images, and the most important production export. Include the fonts and linked assets needed to open each file.
- Define acceptance checks. Write down what must remain correct: page dimensions, object positions, colors, overprints, text editing, layer names, image resolution, animation or interaction requirements, and the final export formats.
- Work on copies. Preserve the original Illustrator files and create a separate conversion folder. Record the date, source application version, destination tool, and export settings for every test.
- Convert one file at a time. Import into Inkscape when you need a local SVG workflow, or rebuild the relevant screens in Penpot or Figma when the project is fundamentally a collaborative interface file. Do not assume that importing a complex illustration into a UI canvas produces a maintainable design system.
- Inspect editable structure. Open groups, masks, clipping paths, text objects, symbols, and effects. A visually accurate flattened result may still fail your requirement for future edits.
- Export every required handoff. Produce the SVG, PDF, PNG, or other agreed deliverables and open them in the receiving application. Check fonts, page bounds, transparency, and color appearance outside the source editor.
- Run a stakeholder review. Ask the person who will edit the file next—not only the person who created it—to make a small change. This exposes hidden problems such as substituted fonts, inaccessible layers, or effects that became ordinary pixels.
- Set a rollback point. Keep the originals and the last known-good exports until the new workflow has completed a real project cycle.
Format fidelity: what can go wrong
AI, EPS, PDF, PS, PNG, and SVG do not carry identical concepts. Some formats preserve vectors but not application-specific live effects; others preserve appearance by flattening objects. Text can reflow when the destination lacks the original font. Linked files can disappear when paths are not packaged. Transparency and blend modes can render differently in print pipelines, browsers, and design canvases.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use a format based on the next person’s task. Keep SVG when another designer or developer needs scalable paths. Use PDF for a controlled proof or print handoff when the recipient does not need every source object. Use PNG for a fixed-size raster asset. Do not treat a successful import dialog as proof that a production file is equivalent.
Collaboration, accounts, and ownership
Desktop and browser tools create different operational obligations. With Inkscape, collaboration usually depends on your existing storage, naming, review, and version-control practices. That offers control but requires discipline: establish who may edit the master, how conflicts are resolved, and where exports are published.
Penpot and Figma centralize collaboration in shared workspaces. That can reduce email attachments and make comments or inspection easier, but access is tied to accounts and service policies. For Penpot, decide between hosted use and self-hosting. For Figma, map your team’s file and page usage to Starter’s stated allowance before inviting everyone.
Operating-system and access considerations
Inkscape’s documented desktop support covers GNU/Linux, Windows, and macOS. The cited Penpot and Figma material establishes their collaborative product and plan features but does not establish equivalent native-client details for every operating system. If your team needs a particular desktop application, offline mode, browser version, or managed-device deployment, verify that requirement directly before standardizing.

Inkscape lists written and video tutorials, which can support a self-directed transition from Illustrator concepts such as paths, nodes, fills, strokes, layers, and clipping. Penpot says its free plan includes team and community tutorials. Build onboarding around the files your team actually delivers: a logo exercise teaches different skills from a responsive interface handoff.
Best Value
A short internal curriculum should cover document setup, reusable assets, typography, export presets, naming, review, and recovery from a bad conversion. Have each learner complete a small change in a shared or converted file so you test both drawing knowledge and handoff reliability.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling every low-cost tool free
Free, open source, free tier, and one-time purchase are different categories. Inkscape is free and open source. Penpot describes a free unlimited offering with a paid Enterprise layer. Figma has a free Starter tier with stated collaboration limits. Affinity Designer’s cited licence is paid. Use the category that matches the current terms.
Choosing a collaborative canvas for illustration production
Interface tools excel at shared screens and handoff, while a desktop vector editor is usually a better home for a large local illustration library. Match the tool to the dominant artifact instead of selecting the product with the longest feature list.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Trusting a single test icon
A basic circle and rectangle reveal almost nothing about conversion risk. Include text, effects, linked assets, masks, transparency, and the exports your client actually requests.
Ignoring the next editor
Reviewers often check only whether the artwork looks right. Have the next person edit a path, replace text, hide a layer, and export the file. If those actions fail, the handoff is not complete even when the screenshot looks perfect.
Relying on stale plan terms
Hosted products can change limits and entitlements. Recheck the official pricing and FAQ pages on the date you create the workspace, and save a copy of the terms relevant to your project.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Inkscape if you need a genuinely free, open-source desktop editor for illustration, logos, or SVG production.
- Choose Penpot if collaborative UX work, inspect mode, unlimited projects and collaborators, open-source licensing, or self-hosting are decisive.
- Choose Figma Starter only after confirming that your shared work fits the documented three-file and three-page-per-file collaboration allowance.
- Consider Affinity Designer only if a paid one-time desktop licence is acceptable.
- Before migrating any important project, test representative files, typography, effects, linked assets, editability, and final exports.
The safest strategy is often mixed: keep a desktop vector editor for illustration and production SVGs, and use a collaborative canvas for interface work. That avoids forcing one application to perform two fundamentally different jobs while giving each team the handoff and ownership model it needs.
