Affinity Layout is the strongest starting point for most people who need professional page layout without a subscription. It is documented as free with a free Canva account, exports print-ready PDFs with bleed and crop marks, and can open InDesign IDML files. Choose Scribus when open-source licensing and print controls matter most. Choose Canva when you are making a short, screen-first design and speed is more important than typographic and prepress control.
Which free InDesign alternative should you choose?
The right replacement depends less on a feature checklist than on where the finished file will go and how complicated the document is. A social graphic, a four-page event flyer, a 200-page book and a commercial-press catalog have very different requirements.

Desktop publishing (DTP) software is built around pages, master-page structures, linked text frames, paragraph and character styles, image placement, preflight and predictable export. Template tools can produce attractive pages, but they may not expose the controls a printer or a long manuscript requires.

Start with the output destination
- Screen or social media: RGB color, a fixed pixel size and a flattened or interactive PDF may be enough.
- Home or office printer: Accurate page size, margins, embedded fonts and a correctly exported PDF are usually more important than press-specific color separations.
- Commercial press: You may need bleed, crop marks, CMYK conversion, spot colors, an ICC profile and a print-ready PDF supplied to the printer’s specification.
Then classify the document
- Short and visual: Flyers, invitations, menus and social graphics can be made efficiently in Canva or a DTP app.
- Long and structured: Books, magazines, catalogs, reports and manuals benefit from styles, page templates, linked frames, section handling and repeatable pagination. Use dedicated DTP software.
- Typography-led: If baseline alignment, hyphenation, widows and orphans, optical margins or precise text flow are central, favor Affinity Layout or Scribus over a template-first browser workflow.
Finally, check your starting files
If the source exists only as an INDD file, ask the person who created it to export IDML. Affinity can import IDML and preserve page structure, text frames and basic styles, but advanced formatting can require manual adjustment. Neither an IDML import nor a PDF is a perfect substitute for the original InDesign document.
Affinity Layout: the best all-round free option
Affinity states that its Layout, Vector and Pixel tools are free with a free Canva account. Canva AI features inside Affinity require a paid Canva plan; the layout application itself is the free option described here.
What you can export
Affinity documents export to PDF with bleed and crop marks. It also lists SVG, JPEG, PNG, TIFF and EPUB export, which covers common print, web, image and fixed-layout ebook handoffs. Before exporting, use the printer’s requested page size, bleed amount, color space and PDF standard rather than assuming a default is acceptable.

Moving an InDesign project into Affinity
- Open the project in InDesign and export it as IDML. An INDD file alone is not the interchange format Affinity reads.
- Open the IDML file in Affinity Layout and let the document finish converting.
- Check every page for missing fonts, changed line breaks, overset text, altered table or object formatting, and misplaced linked graphics.
- Rebuild or correct advanced formatting manually. The documented import preserves page structure, text frames and basic styles, but does not promise a pixel-perfect conversion.
- Save a native Affinity copy and keep the original IDML as a rollback point.
- Export a proof PDF, inspect it at 100 percent and obtain approval before generating the final press file.
The migration limitation that matters
Affinity imports IDML but does not export INDD or IDML. That makes it practical for taking over an InDesign job, not for sending an edited project back to an InDesign-only production team in its native format. Agree on a PDF or another interchange deliverable before switching tools.
When Affinity is the sensible choice
- You want a desktop layout workflow with a documented free entry point.
- You need one application to cover print PDF, raster-image, vector and EPUB exports.
- You can obtain IDML from an existing InDesign project and are prepared to proof the conversion.
- You accept creating a free Canva account and do not need native INDD or IDML output.
Scribus: the open-source print-oriented route
Scribus is the main open-source desktop-publishing candidate in this comparison. Those statements come from a secondary source rather than current official release documentation, so confirm the exact version, operating-system support and export behavior before committing a live print job.

ICC color management matters when the appearance of placed images and the exported PDF must be managed across calibrated devices. PDF creation provides the handoff format most commercial printers request, although the printer’s own PDF preset and preflight requirements remain authoritative.

A cautious Scribus production workflow
- Install the current release that supports your operating system, using Scribus’s own documentation to verify the download and version.
- Create the document at the final trim size. Set margins, page count, facing-page behavior and bleed to the printer’s specification.
- Define paragraph and character styles before flowing a long manuscript. This keeps headings, captions and body copy consistent when pagination changes.
- Place images at an appropriate effective resolution and convert or assign color profiles according to the printer’s instructions.
- Use spot colors only when the job actually calls for them; an arbitrary spot swatch can create unexpected separations.
- Export a PDF using the preset or settings supplied by the printer, then inspect trim, bleed, fonts, transparency, overprint and image resolution.
- Send a proof and ask the printer to preflight the final PDF before a full run.
Where Scribus needs extra verification
Do not treat a feature list in a comparison article as a version guarantee. Check the current Scribus manual and release notes for your operating system, supported PDF standards, color-management behavior and any plug-in or font requirements. This is especially important when a printer demands a particular PDF/X profile or a production team must reopen the source file.

Canva’s browser-first template workflow is useful when the job is short, visual and destined mainly for screens, social platforms or an office printer. It reduces setup time and makes simple alignment and asset placement accessible to non-specialists.
Good uses
- Social graphics and digital announcements with a known pixel dimension.
- Short flyers, posters and invitations where a template accelerates the first draft.
- Simple presentations or handouts that do not require extensive text flow.
When to move to dedicated DTP software
- A commercial printer specifies bleed, crop marks, CMYK, spot colors, ICC profiles or a particular PDF standard.
- The document is long enough that repeated styles, linked text frames, master pages and controlled pagination save substantial time.
- Typography is the main design element and you need detailed control over spacing, hyphenation, baseline behavior or text reflow.
- You must exchange an editable production file with a desktop-publishing team.
Canva can still be used for a first concept or a short digital version, but it should not be described as interchangeable with professional DTP for those cases.

Print-ready setup: a tool-independent checklist
The application is only one part of a reliable publishing workflow. Confirm these items before exporting:
- Trim size: The document page matches the finished size, not the size of the sheet on which it will be imposed.
- Bleed: Backgrounds and images that touch the edge extend beyond the trim by the amount requested by the printer.
- Crop marks: Included only when the printer requests them, and positioned outside the bleed.
- Color: CMYK, spot colors and ICC profiles follow the printer’s written specification; screen RGB values are not a safe substitute.
- Fonts: Fonts are embedded or converted as required, and licensing permits the planned distribution.
- Images: Links are intact, effective resolution is sufficient at final size, and transparency behaves correctly in the exported PDF.
- Text flow: No overset text, accidental blank pages, widows, orphans, missing glyphs or broken ligatures remain.
- PDF inspection: Review the export at 100 percent and, where possible, run the printer’s preflight rather than relying only on the layout application’s preview.
Why crop marks and bleed are different
Bleed is extra artwork beyond the finished edge, allowing small cutting variations without a white sliver. Crop marks show where the sheet should be trimmed. Adding marks without extending artwork into a bleed does not create a bleed, and adding unnecessary marks can interfere with imposition. Follow the printer’s file specification.

A practical decision path
- Ask whether a printer has supplied a PDF specification. If yes, choose a tool that can meet every required color, bleed, mark and PDF standard, then confirm with a preflight. Affinity or Scribus are the logical candidates in this set; verify Scribus’s current implementation.

- Ask whether open-source licensing is a requirement. If so, evaluate Scribus first, while checking current documentation for your platform and printer’s PDF needs.
Common failure modes and fixes
An IDML import looks different from the original
Expect changes in line breaks, font metrics, unsupported advanced effects and object positioning. Compare the converted document page by page, replace unavailable fonts, resolve overset text and rebuild affected styles. Keep the original IDML and export proofs before deleting anything.
The printer rejects the PDF
Request the exact rejection message and PDF specification. Typical causes include missing bleed, wrong color space, unembedded fonts, transparency or overprint behavior, and a PDF standard mismatch. Correct the source document and export using the printer’s preset instead of repeatedly resaving the same rejected PDF.
Text moves after a small edit
Use paragraph and character styles, stable text-frame chains and master-page elements. Check for overset text after every major edit. In a long document, a controlled reflow is preferable to manually nudging individual lines that will move again.

A screen design prints with unexpected color
Screen RGB and press CMYK are different color models. Ask the printer which profile and conversion they require, then proof the converted PDF. Do not judge a press color solely from an uncalibrated monitor.
The free option asks for an account or paid feature
Affinity’s free access requires a free Canva account, while Canva AI features inside Affinity require a paid Canva plan. Separate those optional AI features from the core free layout tools when budgeting and selecting a workflow.
