GrapheneOS phone buying guide (2026): supported Pixel models and what to check before buying

Buy a Pixel 8 or newer from GrapheneOS’s recommended list, then confirm that the exact carrier and regional variant allows bootloader unlocking. The cheapest supported Pixel is not necessarily the best value: Pixel 6 and 6 Pro reach their listed minimum OEM support end in October 2026, while newer models remain covered into the 2030s. GrapheneOS recommends buying a supported phone and installing the operating system yourself rather than relying on a seller’s preinstallation.

Which Pixel phones work with GrapheneOS?

GrapheneOS’s production-support list includes the Pixel 6, 6 Pro and 6a; Pixel 7, 7 Pro and 7a; Pixel 8, 8 Pro and 8a; Pixel Fold; Pixel Tablet; the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold and 9a; and the Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold and 10a. The Pixel Tablet is supported but is not a phone. Check the current GrapheneOS FAQ immediately before buying because the production list and dates can change.

“Supported” and “recommended for a new purchase” are different categories. GrapheneOS strongly recommends Pixel 8 and later because those generations receive a seven-year minimum support guarantee from launch and include newer security features. The recommended list currently covers:

  • Pixel 8, 8 Pro and 8a
  • Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold and 9a
  • Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold and 10a

Earlier Pixels can still be installable while offering much less remaining OEM support. If you are buying used, treat the remaining support window as a hard buying criterion, not a footnote.

OEM support dates: the comparison that matters most

The dates below are the minimum OEM support end dates displayed in the GrapheneOS FAQ. They are not a promise that GrapheneOS itself will provide full updates after Google’s updates stop. GrapheneOS explains that full security updates depend on the OEM continuing to release them; it may provide temporary extended-support releases after that point, but those cannot provide full full security patches and are intended only as a transition measure.

Pixel model Minimum OEM support end shown in the FAQ Buying context
Pixel 10a March 2033 Longest listed phone horizon
Pixel 10 Pro Fold October 2032 Foldable; verify price and condition carefully
Pixel 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro, 10 August 2032 Long-term flagship options
Pixel 9a April 2032 Long horizon in the lower-cost tier
Pixel 9 Pro Fold, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro, 9 August 2031 Long-term 2025-generation choices
Pixel 8a May 2031 Lower-cost model with the seven-year tier
Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8 October 2030 Often the sensible used or sale-priced starting point
Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet June 2028 Supported, but the Fold is an older phone and the Tablet is not a phone
Pixel 7a May 2028 Shorter remaining window than Pixel 8a
Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7 October 2027 Buy only at a price that reflects the shorter horizon
Pixel 6a July 2027 Nearer end of support
Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6 October 2026 At the end of the listed window in the current FAQ

These are policy dates published in the current FAQ, not market statistics or a guarantee of resale value. The earlier generations had a five-year minimum guarantee; Pixel 8 and later moved to a seven-year minimum. A low used price does not extend either period.

How to read the dates

Think of the date as the outside edge of the phone’s OEM security-support runway. A Pixel 8 bought during 2026 has a materially different planning horizon from a Pixel 6 bought at the same price, even if both can run GrapheneOS today. The date also helps you compare a discounted older flagship with a newer “a” model: a lower launch tier can still offer more years of official support.

GrapheneOS can only fully provide security updates while the OEM is releasing the underlying updates. After that, the project may issue a temporary extended-support build, but it explicitly says such releases cannot provide full security patches. Do not buy an end-of-life phone on the assumption that an aftermarket release will permanently replace Google’s security work.

Choose by support horizon before price

Best long-term purchase

The Pixel 10a has the latest listed minimum OEM support end, March 2033, and is on the recommended list. It is the clearest choice when longevity is more important than getting a discounted older flagship. Confirm the exact listing’s unlockability before paying.

Best lower-cost route into the seven-year tier

A Pixel 8, 8 Pro or 8a gives you the newer security architecture and seven-year minimum support tier without requiring a Pixel 10. The FAQ lists October 2030 for the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro and May 2031 for the 8a. Compare the actual sale price, battery condition and storage against a newer 9a or 10a; the official material does not establish current retail prices.

  • Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
  • The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

When an older Pixel can make sense

A Pixel 7-series or 6-series phone may be reasonable as a temporary device, a development handset or an unusually inexpensive purchase, provided you accept its stated end date. Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are listed only through October 2026, so they are poor choices for someone expecting years of current security updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare like with like

Use the same four questions for every listing: Is the exact model on the production-support list? Is it on the recommended new-purchase list? How many OEM-supported years remain? Can this exact carrier and regional SKU have its bootloader unlocked? Only after those answers should you weigh the asking price, storage, camera preferences, screen size or foldable form factor. Retail inventory and prices change too quickly to treat a generic model comparison as a quote.

Check the exact unit, not just the model name

Confirm the retail model and generation

Match the seller’s exact model to the supported and recommended lists. “Pixel 9” and “Pixel 9 Pro Fold,” for example, have different support dates and hardware. Ask for the precise model and carrier SKU when a listing uses vague wording such as “unlocked Pixel” or “international version.” If the seller cannot identify the variant, treat that as a warning rather than assuming compatibility.

Carrier branding can disable unlocking

Some carrier variants are sold with a carrier ID that activates a configuration disabling carrier and bootloader unlocking. A phone can therefore be a supported Pixel model yet unusable for installing GrapheneOS. Prefer a carrier-agnostic unit, or obtain proof that the exact device permits unlocking before you pay. The FAQ documents the carrier-ID issue, and the official WebUSB guide explains that certain variants need internet access while the stock OS checks whether the device was sold as carrier-locked.

Do not confuse a carrier-unlocked phone for cellular use with a bootloader-unlockable phone. They are separate conditions. A seller’s “SIM unlocked” description does not establish that OEM unlocking is available.

A Pixel 6a stock-software exception

The WebUSB guide records a specific Pixel 6a condition: OEM unlocking does not work on the factory stock OS version. That phone must first receive the June 2022 release or a later over-the-air update and then be factory-reset. This applies to an old stock-software state; a phone sold in 2026 may already be updated. Follow the current guide rather than downgrading or assuming the exception applies unchanged.

Questions to send a seller

Before ordering a used phone, ask for the exact model number or carrier SKU, confirmation that the OEM-unlocking toggle is available in Developer options, and the return policy if the toggle is disabled. Ask whether the phone is merely SIM-unlocked or genuinely bootloader-unlockable. For a preinstalled device, ask whether you can verify the verified-boot key and perform a recovery reset before signing in. A refusal to answer these basic questions is a reason to choose another listing.

Buying a phone with GrapheneOS already installed

GrapheneOS says it is not affiliated with or endorsing companies that sell preinstalled devices. Its official recommendation is: “buy a supported device and install GrapheneOS yourself.” Self-installation gives you a known starting point and avoids trusting an unknown seller’s build or configuration.

If you nevertheless buy a preinstalled phone, complete these checks before adding accounts or personal data:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the verified-boot key. Use GrapheneOS’s documented verification process to confirm that the installed system is genuine and signed with the expected verified-boot key hash. A seller’s screenshot or claim is not sufficient.
  2. Reset from recovery after verification. Perform the factory reset from recovery, not merely a normal settings reset. This erases the seller’s user data and helps guard against tampering.
  3. Set up Auditor attestation. Configure local or remote attestation through Auditor and investigate a failed or unexpected result before using the phone.
  4. Check the support date. Avoid end-of-life or near-end-of-life hardware even if the preinstalled price is attractive.

A recovery reset deletes all user data. Keep the phone offline until verification and reset are complete.

Prepare for installation

Installing GrapheneOS replaces the existing operating system. Unlocking the bootloader requires an on-device confirmation and wipes the phone. Back up photos, messages, authenticator seeds, files and any app data you need, and allow time to reinstall and configure applications afterward.

WebUSB: the recommended method for most people

The project recommends the WebUSB installer for most users. You need a compatible browser with WebUSB support, a supported Pixel, a reliable data-capable USB-C cable and a computer. Start from the official WebUSB installation guide, not an unofficial mirror.

  1. Back up the phone and make sure you know the account credentials and recovery information needed after the wipe.
  2. Install all practical stock-OS updates first. This is especially important for an old Pixel 6a that may still be on its factory software.
  3. On the phone, enable the developer settings required by the official guide and enable OEM unlocking if the toggle is available. If it is unavailable, stop and resolve the carrier or network-lock issue; do not proceed to purchase or flash blindly.
  4. Connect the phone directly to the computer with the USB-C data cable. Avoid a hub when possible.
  5. Open the official WebUSB installer, select the device and follow its sequence for bootloader unlocking, downloading the matching release, installation and the final lock or verification steps shown by the installer.
  6. Confirm every on-device warning. The unlock confirmation erases user data; do not continue until the backup is complete.
  7. After installation, finish the first-boot setup, install applications from sources you trust and verify the resulting installation with the project’s recommended checks.

The installer’s labels and supported browser behavior can change, so use the live guide’s instructions rather than an old screenshot or video.

Command-line installation: for technical users

The CLI guide is intended for users comfortable with a terminal and manual device-state changes. Its stated prerequisites include a computer with at least 2 GB of free memory, 32 GB of free storage and a USB cable, along with one of the supported computer environments listed in the guide.

  1. Back up the phone and install any available stock-OS updates.
  2. Read the CLI guide for your computer environment and download the release files using the links it provides.
  3. Use a high-quality, standards-compliant USB-C cable. Connect directly rather than through a hub whenever possible.
  4. Follow the guide’s commands in order to reboot into the required device modes, unlock the bootloader, flash the release and complete the final verification and locking steps.
  5. Accept the on-device unlock warning only after checking the backup. The operation wipes the phone.
  6. Complete first-boot setup and retain the release information so you can troubleshoot or reproduce the installation later.

Do not mix commands from an old tutorial with the current guide. GrapheneOS publishes release information at its releases page; use the files and instructions that correspond to the current release.

Common buying and installation failure modes

  • OEM unlocking is greyed out: suspect a carrier-locked variant or a stock OS that has not completed its network check. Confirm the exact SKU with the seller and consult the WebUSB guide.
  • The phone is supported but nearly out of updates: compare the model’s FAQ date with the price. Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, for example, are listed only through October 2026.
  • A preinstalled seller refuses a recovery reset: do not put personal data on the phone. The reset is a required part of establishing a clean starting state.
  • The computer does not detect the phone: try a known-good data cable, a direct USB port and the browser or computer prerequisites in the official guide; hubs and charge-only cables are frequent causes.
  • You forgot a backup: stop before unlocking. The bootloader confirmation is destructive, and the existing operating system is replaced.
  • An attestation or verified-boot check fails: keep the device disconnected, repeat the verification steps and contact the seller or follow official GrapheneOS troubleshooting rather than trusting the installation.
  • The listing says “factory unlocked” but gives no SKU: treat that as cellular terminology, not proof of bootloader eligibility. Request identifying details before paying.
  • The phone arrives with a short return period: test the exact model, OEM-unlocking toggle and verification steps immediately, before transferring important data.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Pick a Pixel 8 or newer model from the current recommended list unless you have a specific reason to accept a shorter horizon.
  2. Record the exact model, storage and carrier or regional variant from the listing.
  3. Look up that model’s minimum OEM support end in the current FAQ.
  4. Get evidence that the exact unit permits bootloader unlocking; SIM-unlocked status alone is not enough.
  5. For used phones, inspect battery condition, physical damage and return terms in addition to software support.
  6. Prefer self-installation. If buying preinstalled, verify the key, reset from recovery and configure Auditor before use.
  7. Back up before unlocking and reserve time for a full reinstall and app setup.
  8. Use the current WebUSB guide unless you are comfortable meeting the CLI prerequisites and following terminal instructions exactly.

The right GrapheneOS purchase is the one that combines a long remaining OEM support window with a confirmed-unlockable variant. Once those two conditions are satisfied, price, camera and form-factor preferences can decide between the Pixel 8, 9 and 10 families without compromising the installation path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every Pixel that supports GrapheneOS equally good to buy?

No. Production support and the recommended new-purchase list are separate. GrapheneOS strongly recommends Pixel 8 and later, which have a seven-year minimum support guarantee from launch and newer security features. Older Pixels may install successfully but have less time left for OEM security updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the safest Pixel choice for long-term use?

Among the listed phones, the Pixel 10a has the latest minimum OEM support end date, March 2033. Pixel 10, 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL are listed through August 2032, while the Pixel 9 family reaches 2031 or 2032 depending on model.

Does a SIM-unlocked Pixel allow GrapheneOS installation?

Not necessarily. Cellular unlocking and bootloader unlocking are different. Some carrier variants have a carrier ID that disables bootloader unlocking. Confirm the exact SKU and that the OEM-unlocking option is available before buying.

Should I buy a Pixel with GrapheneOS preinstalled?

GrapheneOS recommends buying a supported device and installing it yourself. If you choose preinstallation, verify the genuine verified-boot key, factory-reset from recovery, set up Auditor attestation and avoid hardware that is near its support end.

Will installing GrapheneOS delete my existing data?

Yes. Unlocking the bootloader requires on-device confirmation and wipes the phone, and installation replaces the existing operating system. Back up photos, messages, authenticator data, files and app data first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which installation method should a first-time user use?

GrapheneOS recommends the WebUSB installer for most users. It requires a compatible WebUSB browser, computer and reliable data-capable USB-C cable. The command-line method is intended for technical users and lists at least 2 GB of free memory and 32 GB of free storage as computer prerequisites.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with a recommended Pixel 8 or newer, with the Pixel 10a offering the longest listed OEM support horizon through March 2033. Before paying, verify the exact carrier and regional variant is bootloader-unlockable. Back up everything, install GrapheneOS yourself when possible, and treat preinstalled phones as untrusted until verified, recovery-reset and attested.
