To get notified when someone edits a Google Doc, open it on a computer and choose Tools > Notification settings. Under Edits, select Added or removed content. In a Google Sheet, choose Tools > Notification settings > Edit notifications, then select which changes should trigger an email and whether to receive it right away or in a daily digest. These are per-file alerts; neither setting notifies you about your own edits. For selected-cell alerts, use Sheets conditional notifications when your account supports them.
Choose the right way to monitor changes
| Need | Start with | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Know when a collaborator edits a Doc | Docs edit notifications | Per-file setting; your own edits do not trigger alerts, and emails may omit detail when a file is large or receives many edits. Google Docs notification settings |
| Get general alerts for a Sheet | Sheets edit notifications | Per-file setting; your own edits do not trigger alerts. Google Sheets notification settings |
| Watch specific values in a Sheet | Conditional notifications | Availability is limited to some work or school accounts; alerts may be delayed or combined. Google conditional notifications |
| Find out what changed after the fact | Version history or cell edit history | Cell history omits some types of changes; edit permission is needed to browse earlier versions. Google version history |
| Run custom spreadsheet automation | Apps Script triggers | Script and API edits do not fire edit triggers; quotas and trigger restrictions apply. Apps Script triggers |
| Build a server-side change monitor | Drive API push notifications | Requires an HTTPS webhook; notifications signal a change but do not include its details, and channels expire. Drive API push notifications |
Set edit notifications in Google Docs
- Open the document on a computer.
- Choose Tools > Notification settings. The comment history panel also links to notification settings.
- Under Edits, select Added or removed content.
- Choose the email option shown to save the setting. To stop edit emails, return to the same setting and select None.
The alert is intended for edits by other people, not your own changes. For a very large document or one receiving many edits, an email may not show every detail; open the Doc and inspect its current state or version history. Menu labels and availability can vary by account and Workspace configuration. Google’s notification instructions

Set edit notifications in Google Sheets
- Open the spreadsheet on a computer.
- Choose Tools > Notification settings > Edit notifications.
- Under the change type, choose Any changes are made or A user submits a form.
- Choose Email – right away or Email – daily digest, then save.
These settings apply to the individual spreadsheet and do not notify you about your own edits. Viewers can set notifications but cannot see usernames; editors can see usernames for changes. Google’s Sheets notification instructions

- Enter individual Gmail or Workspace email addresses, or select an email column where supported. Group addresses and non-Google recipients are not supported.
- Save the rule. Recipients may see contextual information such as the changed value and editor, depending on their access.
This feature is limited to certain work or school accounts. Google notes that value-format-only edits, changes from external data, and volatile formula changes while the document is closed may not trigger notifications as expected. Emails may be delayed or consolidated rather than sent immediately. Google’s conditional notification guidance
Review who changed a file and what changed
Use version history for a broader retrospective
Open the file and select the last-edit or version-history control to browse earlier versions and editors. You need edit permission to inspect older versions. In Sheets, unmodified rows may be hidden by default in version history. Docs’ Show editors option is limited to Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, and Education Plus. Google Docs Editors Help: version history
Use cell edit history for one spreadsheet cell
In Sheets, right-click a cell and choose its edit history option to review recorded edits to that cell. It is not a complete spreadsheet audit: row or column additions and deletions, formatting changes, formula-driven changes, and changes preceding restoration of an earlier version may not appear. Use Drive activity for file-level events
Drive activity can show events such as edits, comments, renames, moves or removals, uploads, and sharing changes. It is distinct from the version history used for Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Drive activity notification preferences are also separate: they cover events such as a new share, a comment or action-item mention, or an access request, not a substitute for per-file edit alerts. Automate spreadsheet responses with Apps Script
Apps Script is useful when a change should run code, rather than merely send a built-in email. A simple onEdit(e) trigger runs when a user changes a cell value. An installable edit trigger covers the same broad event category and can use authorized services; an installable change trigger responds to structural changes such as adding a sheet or removing a column. Google describes the installable edit trigger as running when a user modifies a spreadsheet value. Apps Script triggers Installable triggers
- Simple triggers have restricted authorization, a 30-second maximum execution time, and an
onEditqueue of up to two events. - Installable triggers run as the account that created them and are subject to quotas.
- Edits made by scripts or API requests do not fire these edit triggers.
- These restrictions mean Apps Script is an automation mechanism, not a universal or lossless audit feed.
For a simple user-edit handler, the core function can look like this:

function onEdit(e) {
const range = e.range;
const sheet = range.getSheet();
console.log(`${sheet.getName()}!${range.getA1Notation()} changed`);
}
This logs the edited range when a user changes a cell. Add an installable trigger through the Apps Script editor’s Triggers panel if the function needs authorized services; test with a user edit, not a script or API write. The exact automation should account for multi-cell pastes and the trigger limits above. Trigger behavior and restrictions
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBuild a server-side monitor with Drive API push notifications
Drive API push notifications are for applications that can operate a public HTTPS webhook. Create a notification channel for each watched Drive resource. Drive can watch files and changes; it sends HTTPS POST requests with headers describing the channel and resource state, while the request body is empty. Treat the webhook as a signal to fetch details separately through the API, not as a payload containing the edit itself. Drive API push notifications Files: watch Changes: watch
Channels expire and Google does not renew them automatically. Track each channel’s expiration and create its replacement before it expires. This approach requires maintaining the webhook, watch setup, follow-up API calls, and renewal logic; for a person who just wants an email, the built-in file notification is simpler. Troubleshooting missed or unexpected alerts
- You receive no alert for your own edit: that is expected for Docs and Sheets edit notifications; they are for changes made by others.
- You cannot find conditional notifications: the feature is limited to certain work or school accounts. Confirm availability with your Workspace administrator or use general Sheets edit notifications.
- A selected-cell rule misses a change: check whether it was only a formatting change, came from external data, or involved a volatile formula while the Sheet was closed; Google lists these among cases that may not trigger as expected.
- A notification email lacks detail: open the document and use version history; Docs emails may omit details on large files or during many edits.
- A cell’s edit history looks incomplete: use version history for a broader view because cell history omits some structural, formatting, and formula-driven changes.
- An Apps Script edit handler does not run: verify that a user directly changed the cell; script and API changes do not fire the edit trigger. Also check trigger setup, authorization, quotas, and simple-trigger restrictions.
- A Drive webhook stops receiving notifications: check that the HTTPS endpoint remains available and renew the expired channel; notifications carry no change details in their body.

If the task is capturing a web page rather than monitoring Google file edits, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. For example, this cURL request captures the given URL as WebP; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
