Choose the right fetcher
changedetection.io documents both a built-in HTTP fetcher and a Chrome/browser-based fetcher. Use the HTTP fetcher when the relevant page content is available in the response; it is the simpler option. Choose the browser-based fetcher when the site relies on JavaScript rendering or needs browser interaction. The Visual Selector workflow requires the Playwright-capable browser fetcher, according to the official changedetection.io project README.

You do not need a browser fetcher for every watch. Start with HTTP if it returns the information you need; switch to the browser workflow if the page is incomplete or its relevant content depends on rendering or interaction.
Add a watch and prepare the page
- Add the URL: create a watch for the page you want to monitor in changedetection.io.
- Select the browser fetcher if needed: choose the Playwright-capable browser backend for Visual Selector or for pages that require JavaScript rendering or interaction.
- Configure Browser Steps before selecting content: add the actions needed to reach the state you want to monitor. Examples documented by the project include accepting a cookie prompt, logging in, entering a date, and refining a search.
- Run or review the prepared page state: confirm that the page has reached the intended view before narrowing the watch. This matters especially for pages behind a login or interaction flow.
Browser Steps are performed before change detection, so use them to prepare the page rather than expecting the visual selection to perform those actions itself. The project README documents the browser workflow and installation routes, including Docker and Python.
Select the part of the page that matters
Open Visual Selector after the browser steps have prepared the page, then choose the element or region whose changes should trigger attention. Selecting a focused area helps avoid alerts caused by unrelated content elsewhere on the page.
The project also documents CSS selectors, XPath, and text, ignore, and extract filters for narrowing monitored content. Use the method that best identifies the information you care about; after changing interactions or the page state, review the resulting selection again.
Set checks and notifications
Configure the watch’s check interval and notification destination. The API documentation describes watch settings including URL, fetch backend, interval, notification settings, and other options. The official email notification tutorial covers an email setup path.

The API includes an optional screenshot notification setting, but whether a screenshot is supported depends on the configured notification destination. Do not assume every channel can send one; check the documentation for the destination you use.
Verify the watch before relying on alerts
- Confirm the browser fetcher shows the content that actually matters, not a loading state, consent dialog, or intermediate page.
- Check that Browser Steps reach the same intended page state on subsequent checks, particularly after login or search actions.
- Review the selected element or filtered content to ensure unrelated page changes are excluded without hiding the change you want.
- Make sure the notification destination is configured and that any optional screenshot behavior is supported for that destination.
These checks follow from the documented dependence on browser rendering and pre-detection browser actions; they are practical setup guidance, not a claim of testing a live installation.
Self-hosting and hosted use
The project README documents Docker and Python installation for people who want to run changedetection.io themselves. It also mentions a hosted subscription. Choose self-hosting if you want to manage the installation; a continuously running instance is necessary for checks to happen on schedule. Hosted availability and subscription terms can change, so consult the project’s current documentation rather than relying on an old price or feature description.

Troubleshooting
Visual Selector is unavailable
The project ties Visual Selector to its Playwright-capable browser fetcher. Select that backend for the watch and try again; the basic HTTP fetcher does not provide the documented browser-selection workflow.

The captured page is missing content
If the page relies on client-side rendering, try the browser fetcher rather than HTTP. If content appears only after an action, add the appropriate Browser Steps before selecting the element.
The watch monitors the wrong state
Review Browser Steps and ensure they prepare the page before detection. For a search or date-based page, confirm the inputs and resulting view; for a login-protected page, verify the intended authenticated state.
Alerts contain unrelated changes
Refine the selected element or use the documented CSS selector, XPath, or text/ignore/extract filters to focus on the information that matters. Recheck the result so filtering does not remove relevant changes.

No notification screenshot arrives
The API’s screenshot notification option is conditional on support by the notification destination. Verify channel capabilities and its configuration instead of assuming screenshot delivery works for every destination.

Does every changedetection.io watch need Playwright?
No. The project offers a built-in HTTP fetcher as well as a browser-based fetcher. Playwright is needed for the documented Visual Selector workflow and is appropriate when rendering or browser interaction is required.
