Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If a sound file plays on your computer but viewers hear nothing, check each link in the audio path: the file, the streaming source, the mixer, the stream output, and the platform or viewer device. In OBS Studio, start by checking whether the source meter moves during playback; then verify that the source is unmuted and routed to the stream. Hearing audio through your own headphones is a separate check from whether it is reaching viewers.
Find where the sound stops
Work through the audio path in order. A file that plays locally may still fail to decode in the streaming application, be muted in its mixer, or be excluded from stream output. Monitoring audio locally and sending it to viewers are also distinct paths.

- Play the file outside the stream. Confirm it contains audible sound. If it is a video with multiple audio tracks, select the intended track in the player.
- Check that the streaming app can load the source. Confirm the file is present, playback starts, and the source is the right type for the application.
- Watch the source’s mixer meter. Start playback and check whether the meter moves. If it does not, investigate the source, decoding, selected track, or playback state.
- Check mute and stream routing. A moving meter indicates audio reaches that mixer source, but does not by itself prove it is included in the encoded stream.
- Test the actual stream output. Use the destination’s stream-health or encoder dashboard and, if available, a short private or unlisted test. Check on another browser or device if only some viewers report silence.
Fix the source file or source type
Confirm the file has sound
Play the exact file outside the streaming setup. If it is silent there too, the stream is not the cause: check the file, volume, or selected audio track. A video can contain multiple tracks, so make sure the player or source is using the one with the intended audio.
OBS Studio: choose a compatible source
OBS Project documents MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV as supported audio types for its Media Source. Add the file as a Media Source when you want to play a media file directly. For extended media support or a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries; VLC must be installed. OBS Project specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

If the source is a video with more than one audio track, inspect its audio-track selection and choose the track that contains the sound you want. If playback does not start or the source meter remains still, check the file path, source playback controls, and any VLC dependency before changing stream settings.
Use the OBS mixer to isolate mute, monitoring, and routing
In OBS Studio, start the source and look at its channel in the Audio Mixer. OBS’s mixer provides volume meters, mute controls, and monitoring controls; consult the OBS Audio Mixer Guide for the documented controls.

- No meter movement: OBS may not be playing or decoding the source, or it may be using the wrong audio track. Return to the source and file checks.
- The meter moves, but you cannot hear it: Check whether the source is muted and whether monitoring is enabled and directed to the intended monitoring device. A problem with the monitoring device can explain why you cannot hear the source locally; it does not, on its own, prove viewers receive silence.
- You hear it locally, but viewers do not: Check whether the source is included in the stream’s audio output and inspect the encoder or platform’s stream-health information. Local monitoring confirms a local listening path, not the stream output.
Keep these checks separate: source-level meter activity, what you hear on your computer, and what the platform receives answer different questions.

If the OBS meter moves but a test stream is silent, check the encoder output and the destination’s ingest status rather than assuming the media file is at fault. YouTube Help recommends checking sound directly in the encoder and reviewing stream-health errors. Its troubleshooting distinguishes source or encoder problems from an issue with the outgoing connection. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
For YouTube Live using its documented RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as audio codecs. Its guidance gives 44.1 kHz for stereo, 48 kHz for 5.1 audio, and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. These are YouTube-specific settings, not universal requirements for every streaming destination. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings and the stream-health dashboard for the event; platform settings can change.
YouTube’s error guidance includes unsupported audio codecs, incorrect sample rates or bitrates, streams with no audio, and streams with multiple audio streams. If the dashboard reports one of these problems, adjust the encoder output to match the destination’s current requirements. Do not assume that changing the file format alone will fix an encoder configuration or delivery problem.

When sound fails only for some viewers
If the stream is audible on a computer but sounds poor or disappears on a phone, investigate device playback and mono compatibility rather than treating it as a universal stream failure. YouTube Help notes that stereo audio with poor mono compatibility can lose quality or become muted when converted to mono on mobile, and advises checking phase. Compare the result on another device and review the source mix for phase problems. This is a specific diagnostic branch for device-dependent symptoms, not a general explanation for every silent stream. See YouTube’s audio and video troubleshooting guidance.
Common symptoms and what to check next
| Symptom | Likely checkpoint | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The file is silent outside the streaming app | File content, playback volume, or selected track | Try the file in a player and select the track that contains audio. |
| OBS plays the source, but its mixer meter does not move | Source decoding, playback state, or track selection | Confirm the file path and source type; for a VLC Video source, verify VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture. |
| The OBS meter moves, but the streamer hears nothing | Mute state, monitoring setting, or monitoring device | Check the mixer’s mute and monitoring controls, then verify the selected monitoring device. |
| The streamer hears audio, but viewers do not | Stream audio routing, encoder output, or platform ingest | Inspect stream-health errors and make a short private or unlisted test if the destination supports it. |
| Audio fails only on mobile or in mono | Stereo-to-mono compatibility or phase | Compare another device and check the mix’s phase relationship. |
