Use visual regression tests: capture important dashboard states at fixed viewports, compare each new screenshot with a reviewed baseline, and investigate every meaningful difference before accepting it. Playwright Test can do this locally with screenshot assertions; Chromatic offers a hosted review workflow that integrates with Playwright. Keep functional tests too—screenshots show appearance, not whether filters and controls work.
What dashboard visual monitoring catches—and what it does not
A visual regression test compares a rendered screenshot with an approved reference image. It can flag changes such as a shifted chart, altered spacing, a missing table column, or a control that has become difficult to see. A difference is a signal to review, not proof that a bug exists: an intentional redesign also changes pixels.

Visual tests do not establish that dashboard behavior works. A screenshot may look unchanged while a filter is broken, or a filter may work while a layout change obscures its control. Run functional tests alongside visual comparisons.
Choose the comparison workflow
| Decision | Playwright local snapshots | Hosted visual testing such as Chromatic |
|---|---|---|
| Where baselines live | Reference screenshots are kept with the test repository, reviewed, and committed. Playwright snapshot documentation | Snapshots are compared and reviewed in the hosted service. Chromatic Playwright documentation |
| Using an existing Playwright suite | Playwright Test documents native screenshot assertions. Playwright snapshot documentation | Chromatic documents integration with Playwright tests. Chromatic Playwright documentation |
| Review workflow | Review snapshot changes through your version-control workflow. Playwright snapshot documentation | Use the hosted comparison and review workflow, including CI integration. Chromatic documentation |
| Capture controls | Use the documented screenshot-comparison options. Playwright snapshot documentation | Configure viewport widths and diff sensitivity. Chromatic visual testing documentation |
Choose based on where your team wants baselines to live and how reviewers should inspect differences. Hosted review adds a shared service workflow; local snapshots keep the reference images in the test repository.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Build a useful dashboard monitoring loop
- Select high-value views. Start with screens and states users rely on: for example, a key chart, a table, a filtered view, and navigation. Add coverage when existing comparisons produce actionable findings.
- Make the state repeatable. Fix the viewport and arrange for the dashboard to render predictable data and state. Changing live values can make screenshots differ even when the UI has not regressed. The cited tools document screenshot comparison and viewport controls; repeatable dashboard data is an implementation practice, not a vendor guarantee.
- Create an approved baseline. Capture the intended rendering. With Playwright, review and commit reference screenshots; with a hosted workflow, review the baseline in its service interface.
- Run comparisons in the relevant test or CI workflow. Inspect changed regions and decide whether each change is intentional. Fix regressions; update the reference only after approving a real UI change.
- Keep behavior checks separate. Test interactions such as filters and navigation with functional tests rather than treating a visual match as evidence that they work.
Implement local screenshot comparisons with Playwright
Playwright Test provides the toHaveScreenshot assertion. This example assumes a Playwright Test project and an application reachable at the local URL shown. Replace the route and selectors with ones from your app.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('dashboard matches its approved appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/dashboard');
await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Dashboard' }).waitFor();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('dashboard.png');
});
Run the test with your project’s normal Playwright Test command. On the first run, Playwright creates a reference snapshot; inspect it and commit it with the test. Later runs compare the rendered page with that reference. When a change is intentional, use Playwright’s documented update-snapshots option, review the resulting image changes, and commit the approved baseline update. Do not update snapshots just to make a failing comparison pass.

Review changes with hosted visual testing
Chromatic documents a workflow that integrates with Playwright: tests capture UI snapshots, the service compares them with baselines, and a team reviews changes in its cloud interface. Its documentation also covers running visual tests in CI, setting viewport widths, and adjusting diff sensitivity. This can suit teams that prefer hosted comparison and shared review over managing baseline review solely through repository changes.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
When reviewing a diff, determine whether it reflects an approved UI change, a regression, or an unstable capture condition. Chromatic’s documentation puts the decision on the reviewer: “If changes are detected, you will be prompted to verify that they are intentional or fix any errors.” Chromatic visual testing documentation

Troubleshoot noisy or failing comparisons
- The same screen produces different diffs on repeat runs: Check whether dashboard data, selected filters, viewport, or other capture state changed. Make the state predictable before treating pixel differences as UI regressions.
- A diff appears after an intended redesign: Review the changed regions against the approved design, then update the baseline using the workflow documented for your tool. In Playwright, review and commit the updated snapshot rather than replacing it without inspection.
- Too many differences obscure important changes: Narrow the initial suite to high-value screens and states; expand as you make comparisons actionable. In Chromatic, review viewport settings and diff sensitivity in its documentation.
- The screenshot matches but users still report broken controls: Add or fix functional tests for the interaction. A visual comparison does not test behavior.
