Then change settings that target that specific bottleneck. Lowering bitrate will not fix an overloaded encoder, and changing encoders will not fix an unstable connection.
Diagnose the problem before changing settings
Open Streamlabs Desktop’s performance or statistics view while streaming or recording a representative scene, and note which frame count rises. Streamlabs groups the symptoms by likely cause:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Lagged frames: the compositor cannot keep up, often because GPU use is high.
- Skipped frames: the encoder cannot keep up, often because CPU use is high.
- Dropped frames: stream data is not reaching the platform reliably, pointing to the network.
These are diagnostic clues, not proof of a single cause. Watch CPU and GPU usage at the same time, and change one setting at a time so you can tell whether the change helped. Streamlabs emphasizes that settings need to fit the computer rather than follow one universal profile: its optimization guide.
Reduce lagged frames from GPU or compositor load
If lagged frames rise while the GPU is busy, free resources for the game, scene composition, and stream output. Try these changes individually, then check the result:

- Lower demanding graphics settings in the game.
- Limit the game’s frame rate so it does not consume all available GPU capacity.
- Try V-Sync if appropriate for your game and setup; Streamlabs lists it as a way to leave resources for the stream compositor.
- Reduce the stream’s output resolution or frame rate if the system still cannot compose frames smoothly.
A game can appear smooth on the monitor while leaving too little GPU capacity for composing the stream. The useful target is stable capture and encoding, not the highest game settings in isolation. For game-specific adjustments, see Streamlabs’ game settings guidance.
Reduce skipped frames from encoder overload
When skipped frames increase, check whether CPU use is near its limit. Encoder choice shifts work between components; choose the option that has headroom on your particular computer.
If you use x264
x264 encodes on the CPU. If the CPU is overloaded, try a faster CPU preset, which reduces encoding work but can affect compression efficiency. If that is not enough, lower output resolution or frame rate to reduce the encoder’s workload.

- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
If you use hardware encoding
Hardware encoders such as NVENC or AMD encoding use supported GPU resources instead of relying on x264’s CPU workload. They can help when the CPU is the bottleneck, but may not be the right fix if the GPU is already saturated and causing lagged frames. Compare CPU and GPU headroom before switching.
Streamlabs’ optimization guide recommends treating encoder and preset choices as system-dependent. Its current guidance does not establish one encoder as best for every machine.
Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for your platform
Output resolution and frame rate affect both encoding load and the bitrate needed for a clear image. Higher values demand more from the computer and connection. Start with settings your system and upload connection can sustain; check the destination platform’s current limits rather than assuming Twitch examples apply everywhere.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep the combined video and audio bitrate within both your reliable upload capacity and the platform’s current limit. If dropped frames appear, lower bitrate enough to provide connection headroom, or reduce resolution and frame rate if needed. Raising bitrate cannot repair an unstable connection.
Fix dropped frames caused by network conditions
For dropped frames, check the network path before changing encoder settings. Streamlabs identifies Wi-Fi instability as a common source of connection trouble and recommends considering the ingest server when the platform provides manual selection.

- Check the bitrate: make sure video plus audio fits within reliable upload capacity and the destination platform’s limits.
- Try Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi: a wired connection can avoid Wi-Fi instability, but will not fix insufficient ISP upload capacity, routing problems, or a platform-side issue.
- Try a closer ingest server: if your platform lets you choose a server manually, test a nearby option and compare whether dropped frames persist.
- Consider Dynamic Bitrate: it can lower the bitrate during network trouble and move back toward the target as conditions improve.
Streamlabs’ dropped-frame guidance discusses network causes and server selection at its dropped-frame troubleshooting page. A wired connection is an option to test, not a guaranteed solution.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Enable Dynamic Bitrate when the connection varies
Dynamic Bitrate can adapt to changing network conditions by lowering the rate when frames are being dropped and gradually returning toward the target as conditions improve. The trade-off is that delivered image quality may vary while the bitrate changes. It cannot guarantee a fix for persistent connectivity, insufficient bandwidth, or ISP problems.

Use Auto Optimize as a starting point, not a final verdict
Streamlabs’ Auto Optimize scan can provide a baseline for your setup. Run it, then test a real scene and workload: a game or application, overlays, alerts, and other sources you actually use. If a symptom remains, use the frame diagnosis above to make a targeted adjustment. A scan cannot make a single profile optimal for every platform, game, connection, or computer.
Common stream-quality problems and fixes
| What you notice | Likely bottleneck | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Lagged frames increase; GPU use is high | GPU/compositor load | Lower game quality, cap game FPS, try V-Sync, or reduce stream output demands. |
| Skipped frames increase; CPU use is high | Encoder overload | Use a faster x264 preset, consider supported hardware encoding if GPU capacity is available, or lower resolution/frame rate. |
| Dropped frames increase | Network connection or ingest path | Check combined bitrate against reliable upload capacity and platform limits; test Ethernet or another available ingest server. |
| Dropped frames occur when connection conditions fluctuate | Variable network capacity | Try Dynamic Bitrate; investigate persistent bandwidth or ISP issues if drops continue. |
| Quality worsens after raising resolution or frame rate | More encoding and bitrate demand than the setup can sustain | Return to a lower output target, then increase one setting at a time only if the stream remains stable. |
