Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To move a continuous YouTube playlist stream to a new VPS, transfer and test the media and encoder setup, connect the replacement encoder to the scheduled YouTube stream, then verify the incoming feed before shutting down the old server. The YouTube event and the encoder are separate: scheduling an event does not play your playlist; the VPS must supply the audio and video.
What you need to migrate
- Authorized video and audio files, plus any playlist files and their intended order.
- The current encoder settings and the way the encoder starts and stays running.
- The YouTube Live Control Room event details and its server URL and stream key.
- Access to both VPS hosts during transfer and cutover.
Record any separate audio or video inputs, file paths, and service settings used by the current host. Confirm that you have permission to broadcast every item in the playlist. The migration guide from iTechGuides covers transferring authorized media and checking paths and permissions: Move a 24/7 YouTube Music Stream from PC to VPS.

Choose how to run the encoder on the new VPS
FFmpeg on headless Linux
FFmpeg can read local media and send an encoded feed to YouTube from a command-line process. It is a practical fit for playlist-driven automation, especially when supervised by a service manager such as systemd. A concrete Ubuntu example using a concat-demuxer playlist and a dedicated service user is available in the 24/7 YouTube Stream — Setup & Ops Notes. Its paths, commands, and service configuration are examples to adapt, not universal settings.
OBS or another graphical encoder
A graphical encoder such as OBS may suit an operator who needs a visual interface or interactive scene controls. It may require a graphical environment on the VPS. The available migration guidance does not establish a like-for-like performance or reliability winner between OBS and FFmpeg; choose based on playlist control, automation needs, restart behavior, and what the new host can sustain.

Prepare the replacement VPS
- Install or verify your encoder. Confirm the version and dependencies required by your existing workflow.
- Transfer media and playlist inputs. Preserve playlist order and verify every file arrived intact.
- Update paths and permissions. Change old-host paths in playlist and encoder configuration. Ensure the service account can read every media file.
- Check the workload. Determine whether the encoder can pass through compatible media or needs to transcode. Size the VPS against your actual codecs, output settings, library storage, and sustained network use. The sources do not establish a universal CPU, memory, disk, or bandwidth minimum.
- Test playback locally. Start the playlist or inspect its inputs before connecting to YouTube; confirm it advances and loops as intended.
Connect the encoder to the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or reuse the scheduled live stream. YouTube’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder instructions describe setting up the event and encoder connection.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key into the new encoder’s configuration. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter both values in the encoder. The event itself does not start playlist playback.
- Protect the key as a password. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, or ordinary log, and do not use a literal example key from a tutorial.
If a key is exposed, use Live Control Room to generate a replacement, then update the new VPS configuration. See YouTube’s Manage live stream settings guidance.
Keep the encoder running after disconnects or reboots
On headless Linux, run FFmpeg under a service manager such as systemd rather than relying on an interactive shell. Configure the service to start at boot and restart after a process failure, adapting the service user, file paths, environment, logs, and restart policy to your host. The cooscreations operations example includes a systemd unit with restart behavior; treat it as a reference, not a drop-in configuration.

Monitor both sides: check the VPS service status and logs, and check YouTube’s incoming stream health. A running process only confirms that a process exists; it does not prove that viewers are receiving usable video and audio.
Test the new stream and cut over safely
- Start the encoder on the new VPS and confirm YouTube receives an incoming feed.
- Check that video and audio are present and that playlist order and looping work as intended.
- Review encoder logs and YouTube’s stream health indicators for connection or media problems.
- Keep the old host available until the new feed has been validated. Then stop the old encoder so two hosts do not send competing feeds to the same event.
Troubleshoot common migration problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube event is scheduled, but no video arrives | The event is set up, but the encoder is not sending a feed, or its connection details are wrong. | Start the encoder; verify the server URL and stream key in its configuration. |
| Playlist stops or skips files | Paths changed, files did not transfer, or the service account cannot read an input. | Check playlist entries, file locations, and read permissions as the service user; test the playlist locally. |
| The service runs but YouTube output is missing or poor | A live process does not guarantee valid input, encoding, or delivery. | Inspect encoder logs and YouTube’s incoming stream health; verify that the intended audio and video inputs are being read. |
| Stream stops after a reboot or process failure | The encoder is not supervised or its service configuration is incomplete. | Check the service manager’s boot enablement, user, paths, environment, and restart behavior. |
| Connection fails after rotating a stream key | The VPS still has the old key. | Update the encoder’s secret with the replacement key from Live Control Room. |
Or let it run in the cloud
Instead of maintaining a VPS encoder, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the service supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
