Use a flexible measuring tape to take your chest or bust, waist, hips or seat, and—when buying pants—inseam. Then compare those measurements with the chart and fit notes for the exact garment. A letter size or number is not consistent across brands, and a body measurement is not interchangeable with a garment measurement.
What you need and how to prepare
Use a flexible cloth or fiberglass measuring tape. A rigid metal tape does not wrap smoothly around body curves; Dress Measurement’s guide recommends a flexible tape for manual measurements.

- Measure over underwear or a thin, fitted layer, not bulky clothing.
- Stand naturally and breathe normally. Keep the tape horizontal and snug without pulling it tight enough to compress your body.
- Use a mirror to check that the tape stays level, or ask someone to help with measurements across your back.
- Write down each result with its unit (inches or centimeters) and the date. This makes it easier to use the figures at checkout and to notice when an old measurement may need updating.
How to take the measurements
Chest or bust
For a bust measurement, wrap the tape around the fullest part of the bust and keep it level across your back. For a chest measurement, follow the garment brand’s directions: Carhartt’s guide, for example, places the tape just under the arms and across the shoulder blades. Do not assume that every chart uses the same landmarks.
Waist
Check where the specific brand says to measure. Carhartt identifies the natural bend by having you bend side to side; that point may not be the narrowest part of the torso. Levi’s US guide describes its waist measurement at the smallest part. These are brand-specific instructions, not competing universal rules. Follow the chart for the item you are considering.

Hips or seat
Measure around the fullest part of your hips or seat, with the tape horizontal. If the chart lists both high hip and full hip, take care to use the measurement matching the chart’s label.
Inseam and other lengths
For pants, measure along the inside leg from the crotch toward the ankle or the hem point you want. Levi’s US guidance measures from crotch to ankle. Some retailer instructions instead suggest measuring the inside seam of pants that already fit well, from crotch to cuff; use that approach when the chart asks for a garment measurement.

Only take shoulder width, sleeve length, thigh, or upper-arm measurements when the garment chart requests them or they matter to the fit you want.
How to use a size chart without mixing up measurements
Open the chart for the relevant brand and clothing category, and use a product-specific chart when one is available. Compare your body measurements with the chart’s body measurements—not with a size label you wear elsewhere. Levi’s US charts, for example, publish values for its own categories; they are not a universal conversion for other brands.

First check what the chart measures. UNIQLO Singapore’s support page explains that product measurements describe the actual garment laid flat and can be compared with clothing you own. A flat garment width and your body circumference are different quantities; do not compare them as if they were the same. UNIQLO also notes that design and fabric characteristics can cause small measurement variations, so chart figures are guidance rather than a guarantee of exact fit.

Compare the two neighboring rows for the measurements that matter to the garment, then consider its intended cut, stretch, and fit notes. A fitted, relaxed, loose, or oversized design leaves a different amount of ease around the body. Fabric and design information can also affect how a garment wears.

There is no universal rule to size up when measurements fall between rows. Carhartt, for example, recommends choosing the next size up when chest measurements land between sizes in its own guide; apply that advice only to the relevant Carhartt sizing context. For another brand, use that brand’s guidance and the garment’s stated fit.
