Choose a home inkjet by matching it to what you print, how often you print, and whether you need scanning or copying—not by the printer’s headline price alone. For light, mixed household use, a wireless color all-in-one is a sensible category to compare. If you print color regularly, also compare refillable ink-tank models; for frequent photos, prioritize photo-paper and borderless-printing support. A printer that is mostly for high-volume text may not need to be an inkjet at all.
Start with what you print and how often
Estimate a typical month, then separate ordinary documents from photos, schoolwork, labels, or other media. Frequency matters too: occasional printing and steady weekly use can favor different ink systems, even at a similar page count.

HP’s US buying guide offers a rough volume prompt: it recommends an all-in-one inkjet for many households printing fewer than 50 pages per month, describes business inkjets for 50–200 pages, and puts 200 or more pages in a laser or high-yield business category. These are HP’s vendor-specific guide thresholds, not an industry standard or a guarantee that a particular printer will suit your workload. Use them to start comparing, not as a rule. If most of your output is text and your volume is substantial, compare a monochrome laser printer as well. HP says it may be faster and have a lower cost per page for high-volume work. If you need color documents or photos, an inkjet may still make sense; the deciding factor is your mix of output, cost, and speed.

Choose a printer type that fits your use
| Type | Good fit to investigate | Main tradeoff | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cartridge inkjet | Occasional printing, low volume, or a lower initial device budget | Replacement ink can add to ongoing costs; long periods without printing can still require printhead care. | Exact cartridge compatibility, published yield, supported media, and photo features. |
| Refillable ink-tank inkjet | Regular color printing where larger ink supplies and potentially lower recurring ink costs matter | Typically a higher initial purchase cost; the ink system and printhead still need maintenance. | Compatible bottles, exact-model yield, supply prices, and maintenance instructions. |
| Photo-oriented inkjet | Frequent family or hobby photo printing | Photo output brings additional choices around ink configuration and paper; document-focused features may be less central. | Paper sizes and finishes, borderless printing, supported media, and color needs. |
| High-volume text setup | Substantial printing that is mostly black-and-white text | An inkjet may not be the best-fit printer class; compare speed and running cost with a monochrome laser. | Monthly volume, speed, cost per page, duty cycle, and whether color or photos are necessary. |

Compare the full cost of ink, not just the printer
A low purchase price does not tell you what printing will cost over time. Compare the exact printer’s supply price and published yield—the number of pages the manufacturer says a cartridge or bottle can print. Canon provides yield information by product; check the specific model and its compatible supplies rather than applying a generic cost-per-page figure. Canon’s ink-yield information

Use your likely print mix when judging a quoted yield. A manufacturer’s page-yield figure is not a promise that every household will get the same number of pages, particularly when printing images or other ink-heavy content. Calculate a cost per page only when you have current supply prices and a clearly identified yield for the exact supply and model.

Whether that offsets a higher upfront price depends on the model, local prices, and your actual use. Do not assume a tank printer will be cheaper for every household. Both Brother and Epson note that maintenance can consume ink, so headline yield alone does not capture every part of ownership. Brother’s tank-printer guide and Epson’s tank-printer guidance

For photos, check paper and color features
If photos are a regular job rather than an occasional extra, verify that the printer supports the paper sizes, finishes, and weights you intend to use. Check for borderless printing if you want images to reach the edge of the sheet. Confirm that the exact model accepts the chosen media; a general inkjet label does not establish support for every photo paper or specialty stock.
Epson UK says six-color printers suit many photo enthusiasts, while ten-color systems target professionals seeking a wider color gamut. Treat this as Epson’s guidance, not a universal rule: the right configuration depends on the print result you want, your budget, and the paper and ink available for the particular model. Photo paper is worth considering only if you print photos, and it should match the printer’s supported size, finish, and weight. Do not assume that a printer with color ink can produce borderless photos or handle every type of photo media.
Decide which workflow features you will use
An all-in-one adds scanning and copying to printing. If you regularly digitize paperwork, copy forms, or work with stacks of pages, check whether the model has an automatic document feeder (ADF). For two-sided documents, look for automatic duplex printing rather than assuming it is included. Features differ by model, including within the same product family.

These are practical selection checks, not features that every inkjet includes. Brother and Epson describe different feature sets across their inkjet and tank offerings; confirm the specifications for the individual model you are considering. Brother’s inkjet printer information
Account for inkjet maintenance if you print infrequently
Inkjet printheads need care, and long gaps between print jobs can lead to dried ink or cleaning cycles. Brother describes purges after periods of inactivity, which use ink to maintain the printhead. Epson UK recommends printing a few pages every couple of weeks. These are manufacturer recommendations, not a guarantee that every model has the same schedule or behavior; follow the instructions for your exact printer. Brother’s tank-printer guide and Epson’s tank-printer guidance
If you print only a few times a year, factor possible maintenance and ink use into the choice instead of looking only at yield. A cartridge model may have a lower initial price, while a tank model’s potential recurring-ink advantage is more relevant when you print regularly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a short checklist to narrow the shortlist
- Estimate your monthly volume and output mix. Count documents and photos separately, and note whether printing is occasional or routine.
- Choose the printer category. Compare cartridge and tank inkjets for color printing; include a monochrome laser if your workload is mostly high-volume text.
- Compare exact-model supplies. Check compatible cartridge or bottle numbers, published yield, and current local supply prices.
- Check essential workflow features. Verify scan/copy, ADF, duplex, wireless/mobile compatibility, and media support as needed.
- Confirm photo requirements. For regular photos, check paper dimensions and finishes, color system, and borderless support.
- Read the maintenance guidance. Look for the model’s instructions for inactivity, printhead cleaning, and ink use during maintenance.
No universal current model winner is established by these manufacturer guides. They are useful for identifying buying factors, but they are not independent model-by-model tests of print quality, speed, reliability, or total ownership cost.
