The Safest ChatGPT Alternatives: How Claude, Gemini, and Copilot Handle Your Data

No chatbot is universally safest by policy alone. Compare Claude, Gemini, and personal Copilot by training controls, retention, review, and account type.

There is no evidence here for one universally “safest” ChatGPT alternative. Claude, Gemini Apps, and Microsoft Copilot offer different training controls, retention rules, and human-review exceptions, so the best fit depends on what you want to protect. Turning off model training does not necessarily stop storage, safety processing, or review.

What “safest” means in a chatbot privacy comparison

A privacy policy can show what a provider says it may do with your data; it does not establish an independent security score or prove how securely every system performs in practice. These comparisons concern the providers’ published policies and controls, not independent security testing.

Start with the risk you want to reduce. Avoiding model training is different from limiting account-linked chat history, preventing human review, or protecting confidential business information. A setting that addresses one goal may leave the others unchanged.

  • Training: Can your prompts, responses, uploads, or feedback be used to improve models?
  • Retention: How long does information remain in chat history or backend systems, and what exceptions apply?
  • Human review: May staff or service providers inspect chats, and can you opt out?
  • Account type: Are you using a consumer account, a work or school tenant, a commercial workspace, or an API?

How the policies compare

Service and account Training controls Retention and review What the policy means in practice
Claude consumer (Free, Pro, Max; some Claude Code use) Users can control the model-improvement setting. Incognito chats are excluded from model improvement even when that setting is enabled. Anthropic says deleted chats disappear from history immediately and are deleted from backend systems within 30 days. If model improvement is enabled, data may remain in de-identified form in training pipelines for up to five years. Inputs and outputs flagged by trust-and-safety systems may be retained for up to two years, and classification scores for up to seven years. Legal, dispute, and policy-enforcement exceptions also apply. Neither deletion from history nor Incognito mode means that every copy or safety-related record is immediately erased. These details concern consumer products, not commercial terms. Anthropic Privacy Center
Gemini Apps consumer With Keep Activity off, future chats are not used to train Google’s AI models unless you submit feedback. Temporary chats are also excluded from training. With Keep Activity on, activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default; the setting can be changed to three months, 36 months, or indefinite. Chats made with Keep Activity off and temporary chats remain with the account for 72 hours. Chats already reviewed by human reviewers may be kept for up to three years and are not removed by deleting activity. Google says a subset of chats is reviewed by staff or trained service providers. Disabling activity reduces future training use; it does not mean no retention or no human processing. Google cautions: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.” Account activity controls should not be assumed to govern every connected Google service. Gemini Apps Privacy Hub Gemini Apps activity controls
Microsoft Copilot with a personal Microsoft account Microsoft offers a control to exclude future conversation activity from training. Microsoft says some personal-account conversation, voice, and uploaded-file context may be used for AI training, with listed exclusions and an exception for users who opt out. Opting out of model training does not opt out of other general product or system improvements, advertising, digital safety, security, or compliance uses. Limited human review may occur when investigating suspected Code of Conduct violations; Microsoft says users cannot opt out of that review. “Copilot” is not one uniform privacy context. Microsoft’s controls page is for personal accounts, excludes Microsoft 365 Copilot used with a work or school Entra ID account, and says its instructions apply to an older app version. Which option fits your privacy priority?

If you mainly want to limit model training

Compare the exact opt-out scope, not just whether a control exists. Claude provides a model-improvement setting and excludes Incognito chats from improvement. Gemini says future chats made with Keep Activity off are not used for training unless you submit feedback, and temporary chats are also excluded. Microsoft’s personal-account control excludes future conversation activity from training, but Microsoft lists other processing that remains. Check whether the control covers the data types you use, such as uploads or voice.

If you want less chat history associated with your account

Look at retention separately from training. Google’s Keep Activity-off and temporary chats remain associated with the account for 72 hours for service and safety purposes. Anthropic says deleted Claude consumer chats are removed from backend systems within 30 days, while specified safety and training records may have longer retention. A visible-history deletion button should not be read as proof that every related record is gone at once.

If confidential business data is involved

Do not assume consumer chatbot terms apply to a work or school account, commercial workspace, or API. Microsoft explicitly separates personal Copilot from Microsoft 365 Copilot under a work or school Entra ID account. OpenAI says data from listed business products and the API is not used for training by default, and qualifying organizations can configure retention, including API zero data retention. Those are business and API commitments, not blanket terms for consumer ChatGPT accounts. OpenAI business data commitments OpenAI API data controls

ChatGPT as the baseline

OpenAI’s consumer model-development information describes how information is handled for training, but the material cited here does not establish one universal consumer chat-retention period. Do not infer consumer retention from OpenAI’s separate business or API commitments. For a fair comparison, check the consumer account’s current controls and terms alongside the exact alternative and account type you are considering. How OpenAI uses data to improve model performance

A practical checklist before sharing a prompt

  1. Identify your account type. Confirm whether you are in a personal consumer account, a work or school tenant, a workspace, or an API product.
  2. Open the product’s privacy or data controls. Find the current training and activity settings for that service rather than relying on a general account-level assumption.
  3. Read what the control does not cover. Check for safety, security, compliance, advertising, service improvement, feedback, or human-review exceptions.
  4. Check deletion and retention separately. Distinguish visible chat history from backend deletion and from records retained after review, abuse flags, legal requests, or policy enforcement.
  5. Minimize sensitive input. Remove names, account numbers, client details, and confidential documents unless the service and account terms are appropriate for that data.

Policies and settings can change. Recheck the linked provider terms and the controls in the exact product before entering sensitive information.
