Measure light where your plant’s leaves will be—not at the glass—using a meter that reads lux or foot-candles. Take readings at the same height and position the plant will occupy, note the time and conditions, and treat the result as a snapshot rather than a permanent rating for the window.
How to measure the light where your plant will sit
- Choose a measuring tool. A handheld digital lux or foot-candle meter provides repeatable readings. A phone light-meter app is a convenient alternative for comparing spots, but its accuracy varies by device and calculation method, as UF/IFAS explains.
- Put the sensor at foliage height. Hold it in the exact spot where the plant’s leaves will be. Follow the device’s instructions for sensor orientation—usually with its sensing surface facing the window or light source—and keep your body from casting a shadow over it. Iowa State Extension also recommends measuring at the plant’s location and height: its measuring guide.
- Record the reading and its unit. Use either lux or foot-candles, and keep the unit consistent when comparing locations. One foot-candle equals 10.76 lux, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
- Note the conditions. Write down the time, weather, whether direct sun reaches the sensor, and any shade or curtains. If you are choosing between two spots, measure them under similar conditions.
- Repeat at other times when placement matters. A single reading shows what is reaching the plant at that moment. Readings at different times of day—or in another season—can reveal meaningful changes.
A basic handheld meter is optional, not a requirement. UF/IFAS notes that a research-grade or photography meter is unnecessary for ordinary houseplant use; a meter displaying foot-candles or lux is sufficient for practical comparisons. A phone app can help you compare locations, but do not present its result as a calibrated measurement.

What the reading can—and cannot—tell you
Lux and foot-candles measure illuminance according to human vision, not the full amount of plant-usable light. They are still useful for comparing ordinary window locations. For supplemental grow lights, photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) measures photosynthetically active photons reaching a surface and is more directly relevant to plants. A lux-to-PPFD conversion depends on the light source, so there is no universal conversion. Iowa State Extension explains the distinction and its limits in its supplemental-light guidance.
Neither a number nor a label such as “bright indirect light” is a universal prescription for every species. Use readings as a rough way to compare spots, then consider the care guidance for the plant you own.

Use broad light ranges as orientation, not rules
Extension guides offer useful reference bands, but they do not all use identical cutoffs. UF/IFAS describes its categories as generalizations rather than scientific terms. The following are examples from extension guidance, not strict thresholds for every plant:
| Category or example | Reading | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Low light | 25–100 foot-candles | University of Maryland Extension’s broad category: Lighting for Indoor Plants. |
| Medium light | 100–500 foot-candles | University of Maryland Extension’s broad category: Lighting for Indoor Plants. |
| High light | 500–1,000 foot-candles | University of Maryland Extension’s broad category: Lighting for Indoor Plants. |
| Direct indoor sunlight | Over 1,000 foot-candles | University of Maryland Extension’s broad category: Lighting for Indoor Plants. |
| Low, medium, high/bright, direct | About 75, 150, 300, and 1,500 foot-candles, respectively | Illustrative placement values from University of Illinois Extension, not universal cutoffs. |
The ranges overlap at their boundaries, and the Illinois examples differ from Maryland’s bands. That variation is a reason to use the numbers for rough orientation and comparison, not to decide that a plant must receive one exact reading.

Why the same window can give different readings
Light at a plant’s position changes with more than the window’s compass direction. Distance from the glass, curtains, insect screens, the window’s type and cleanliness, cloud cover, season, and shade from trees or buildings can all affect intensity. Seasonal sun angle and changing leaf cover outside can also change indoor light, as noted by Maryland Extension and Illinois Extension.
