How to Choose the Best Window for Each Houseplant

Match a houseplant to the light at its actual spot by considering window direction, direct-sun hours, distance, shade and seasonal changes.

Choose the window by the light reaching the plant’s leaves—not by direction alone. Start with the plant’s light needs, then consider direct-sun hours, distance from the glass, outdoor shade and the changing seasons. A bright south window can suit a sun-loving plant, while a north window is often a better starting place for a low-light plant.

Which window is best for my houseplants?

Window direction is a useful first clue, not a guarantee. The University of Minnesota Extension recommends choosing a plant whose requirements match the light at its actual location. A roof overhang, nearby trees or buildings, window glass and the plant’s distance from the window can all change how much light reaches it.

Light category Starting window placement Examples
Low North-facing window or a fairly dark corner Chinese evergreen, cast iron plant, parlor palm, dracaena, pothos, philodendron, snake plant, peace lily and ZZ plant
Medium East-facing window, or near a west-facing window out of direct sun Ferns, rubber plant, fiddle-leaf fig, begonia, spider plant, jade, schefflera, hoya, peperomia and Monstera
High Bright south- or southwest-facing location Cacti, succulents, citrus, basil and other culinary herbs, hibiscus, gardenia, jasmine, geraniums, poinsettia and orchids

These groupings are broad starting points, not promises that every plant in a category will thrive in every window. For instance, Penn State Extension says Phalaenopsis orchids do best in east or west windows. Plant stage matters too: University of Minnesota Extension’s guidance for Monstera cuttings favors north or east windows and cautions against direct southern or western sun; that propagation advice is not a universal placement rule for mature plants.

How should I compare two possible windows?

Assess the spot where the plant will sit, rather than comparing windows from across the room. A window may be sunny at the glass but offer much less light a few feet away. Check the following before choosing:

  • Direct or indirect sun: Note whether sunlight falls directly on the leaves or the area receives bright light without a sunbeam.
  • Hours of direct exposure: Observe how long direct sun reaches the planned position during the day.
  • Distance from the glass: Light generally falls off as a plant is moved farther into the room.
  • Obstructions: Trees, nearby buildings, curtains and roof overhangs may shade a window; even a south-facing window can be dim under an overhang.
  • Season: Sun angle and intensity change during the year, so a winter placement may become much brighter in spring or summer.

Then match the observed conditions to the plant’s needs and its tolerance for direct sun. For example, Penn State Extension says jade plants grow and look their best with four or more hours of direct sunlight daily, and that they thrive in south-facing windows. That specific guidance should not be applied to every plant.

Can a plant go in a north-facing window?

Often, yes, if it is a low-light plant and the window provides enough ambient light. A north-facing window is commonly a lower-light exposure, and University of Minnesota Extension also lists fairly dark corners as possible locations for low-light plants. Low light usually means slower growth and lower water use; check the soil before watering rather than following the same schedule you would use for a brighter spot.

“Low light” does not mean no light. If a plant’s growth becomes weak or its leaves lose color, the location may be too dim. In particular, flowering plants and plants that need direct sun may not perform well in a north-facing window.

How much direct sunlight does this plant need?

Use species-specific advice where available, and treat general light categories as estimates. University of Minnesota Extension, in guidance reviewed in 2026, gives these ranges:

Category Light intensity Foot-candles Wattage listed in the guidance
Low 50–150 µmol m−2 s−1 50–250 10–15 watts
Medium 150–250 µmol m−2 s−1 250–1,000 15–20 watts
High 250–450 µmol m−2 s−1 More than 1,000 More than 20 watts

These are category ranges, not a reading of your home’s window. Wattage alone does not measure plant-usable light: the extension guidance says bulb packaging should also report a measure of light intensity, such as PPF, lumens or foot-candles. Individual cultivar, glazing, shade, distance and season can all affect exposure at the leaves.

For a specific example, Penn State Extension’s advice for hoyas is medium to bright indirect light beside a south-, east- or west-facing window. Its jade guidance is more sun-specific, while its Phalaenopsis advice favors east or west. Those differences are why a plant’s name and needs matter more than a single rule for all windows.

Why are my houseplant’s leaves pale or scorched?

Leaf condition can help you reassess placement, but symptoms are clues rather than a diagnosis: watering, pests and other problems can cause similar changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Possible signs of too little light: pale or yellow leaves, leggy stems, leaf drop, fading variegation or failure to flower.
  • Possible signs of too much light: scorched or bleached leaves, pale patches or crispy edges, especially after a sudden move into stronger sun.

In spring, sunlight grows stronger and the sun’s angle changes. If a plant needs more brightness, move it closer to a bright window gradually over one to two weeks, particularly near south- or west-facing exposures. A sudden increase can scorch shade-loving plants such as pothos, philodendrons, peace lilies and ferns.

What if my windows do not provide enough light?

A grow light can supplement natural light when no suitable window is available. University of Minnesota Extension says white or mixed/balanced lights are suitable for most plants at any growth stage. Its broad placement guidance is 12–24 inches from foliage houseplants and 6–12 inches from flowering houseplants, with total light durations of 12–14 hours for foliage plants and 14–16 hours for flowering plants. These are general starting points, not a species- or fixture-specific prescription; follow the fixture’s instructions and account for its heat and light output.

When evaluating a bulb, check more than its wattage. Packaging should also identify a light-intensity measure such as PPF, lumens or foot-candles. If the natural light is adequate, matching the plant to the existing window is simpler than trying to compensate for a poor placement.
