Track repeat contacts, answer quality, effort, escalation, speed, and operating impact—not just chatbot containment or satisfaction. A controlled or phased rollout gives a stronger test of whether AI caused a change; a simple before-and-after comparison cannot rule out other factors.
Start by defining what “better” means
The right success measure depends on the job the AI performs. A troubleshooting chatbot should be judged on whether it correctly fixes the problem; a booking assistant on whether the booking is completed; an agent copilot on the quality and outcome of AI-assisted human service. There is no universal AI customer-experience score established by the sources below.

Write an evaluation question before choosing metrics. For example: “For billing questions in web chat, does AI increase correct resolution without increasing customer effort or repeat contact?” Then specify:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Unit of analysis: a session, customer issue, case, or end-to-end customer journey.
- Eligible interactions: which channels, issue types, and customers are included.
- Resolution: what evidence counts as successful completion, rather than a bot simply ending or containing a conversation.
- Follow-up window: how long after the interaction you will look for a repeat contact, retrial, or reopened case.
Keep AI-only self-service separate from interactions where AI assists a human agent. Combining them can make results hard to interpret: a successful agent copilot interaction does not show that a chatbot could have resolved the same issue alone.
#1 Best Overall
- Interactive tutorial exercises: MyMathLab's homework and practice exercises are correlated to the exercises in the relevant textbook, and they regenerate algorithmically to give you unlimited opportunity for practice and mastery. Most exercises are free-response and provide an intuitive math symbol palette for entering math notation. Exercises include guided solutions, sample problems, and learning aids for extra help at point-of-use, and they offer helpful feedback when students enter incorrect
- eBook with multimedia learning aids: MyMathLab courses include a full eBook with a variety of multimedia resources available directly from selected examples and exercises on the page. You can link out to learning aids such as video clips and animations to improve their understanding of key concepts.
- Study plan for self-paced learning: MyMathLab's study plan helps you monitor your own progress, letting you see at a glance exactly which topics you need to practice. MyMathLab generates a personalized study plan for you based on your test results, and the study plan links directly to interactive, tutorial exercises for topics you haven't yet mastered. You can regenerate these exercises with new values for unlimited practice, and the exercises include guided solutions and multimedia learning aid
- NOTE: Access codes can only be used one time. If you purchased a used book that claimed that it included an access code, your code may already have been used and it will not work again. In this case, you must purchase a new access code.
Build a baseline and a credible comparison
Before launch, calculate your chosen measures for the same channel, issue types, and eligible population you plan to evaluate. Keep the definitions and denominators consistent when comparing AI with existing service.
Where it is operationally and ethically appropriate, randomly assign access to the AI or introduce it in phases while retaining a contemporaneous comparison group. This helps separate the AI’s effect from other changes. If you can only compare results before and after launch, describe the result as an association: demand mix, staffing, seasonality, policy changes, or product releases may also have shifted. NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework emphasizes evaluation in conditions similar to deployment and comparison with relevant human, simpler-system, or manual baselines (NIST AI RMF Playbook; NIST AI RMF Core).
For higher-stakes or more complex systems, NIST’s ARIA pilot illustrates multiple testing levels—model testing, red teaming, and field testing—rather than relying on a single pre-launch check. Its 2025 report describes a pilot involving five organizations and seven AI applications; that is the evaluation scope, not evidence of customer-service performance (NIST ARIA Pilot Evaluation Report).

Pair what customers report with what happened to their issue. Define each metric’s denominator and collection method, and interpret the dimensions together rather than treating one as proof of success.
| Dimension | Measures to consider | How to interpret them |
| Customer perception | Post-interaction CSAT, customer effort, confidence or trust, complaints, dissatisfaction | Report survey response rates. Respondents may differ from nonrespondents; positive sentiment does not establish that the task was completed. |
| Resolution | Verified first-contact resolution, issue completion, repeat contact, retrial or reopen rate, escalation to a person | Set a follow-up window and denominator. Count containment as success only when the customer’s task actually succeeded. |
| Answer quality and correctness | Human-reviewed accuracy and relevance, policy compliance, severity-weighted error rate, contextual understanding | Review a sample with an auditable rubric, stratified by task and risk. |
| Effort and accessibility | Customer effort, turns and transfers, abandonment, successful handoff, outcome by language | Shorter interactions are not necessarily easier: a failed loop can end quickly. |
| Speed and availability | Time to first useful response, time to verified resolution, service availability | Separate first response from completion; consider tail latency when slow cases matter. |
| Operations | Cost per resolved issue, agent workload or utilization, agent confidence, training time | Pair productivity gains with customer outcomes and quality. |
| Trust and risk | Privacy or security incidents, disparity checks, harmful or misleading outputs, appeal or override rate | Define routes for escalation, review, and incident response. |
Industry reports offer examples, not a universally validated checklist. HubSpot’s 2024 Asia Pacific report includes measures such as time to resolution, satisfaction, self-service success, cost per interaction, resolution rate, first-call resolution, agent confidence, and quality-assurance ratings (HubSpot, The AI Advantage: Strategy and Adoption Trends in the Asia Pacific). KPMG UK’s 2024/25 report proposes measures including AI first-contact resolution, escalation, response accuracy, task automation success, and contextual understanding. Labels such as “AI Trustworthiness Index” in that report are proposals, not standardized measures (KPMG UK, Customer Experience Excellence Report 2024/25).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check whether speed or containment is hiding a failure
A high containment rate can mean the bot solved the issue—or that customers gave up without reaching a person. A faster response can be useful without producing a correct answer. Read these signals alongside verified resolution, follow-up contacts, survey feedback, and sampled quality reviews.
Field evidence shows why this distinction matters. A 2026 working paper about an experiment in Alibaba e-commerce after-sales support reports that agents using AI-generated diagnoses and solution suggestions improved issue-identification time, chat duration, customer ratings, and dissatisfaction rates, but did not significantly change customer retrial rates. This is evidence from one setting, not a guaranteed result for other services; it also illustrates that reported experience and subsequent customer behavior can move differently (Ni et al., “Generative AI in Action: Field Experimental Evidence from Alibaba’s Customer Service Operations”).

Document where each metric comes from and how it is produced: inclusion rules, missing data, survey timing, metric owner, update frequency, and uncertainty. Have human reviewers score a sample of interactions against a rubric tied to the actual task. Compare overall results with relevant slices, such as issue complexity, channel, language, and customer group, when the data supports those comparisons. An overall average can conceal a system that works well on routine requests but poorly on difficult or less common ones.
Set up a way for customers and agents to report failures, appeal outcomes, and trigger review. NIST’s AI RMF calls for feedback and appeal processes to be integrated into evaluation metrics, alongside production monitoring, error tracking, and attention to response and repair time (NIST AI RMF Core, Measure 3.3; NIST AI RMF Playbook). Monitoring should continue after launch: NIST’s March 2026 announcement of AI 800-4 identifies post-deployment monitoring as an evolving area, including challenges in defining beneficial human impacts (NIST AI 800-4 announcement).
Make the decision without hiding trade-offs
Compare AI with the relevant alternative—human service, a simpler tool, or the current process—on satisfaction and effort, verified completion and repeat contact, accuracy and harm, escalation and handoff quality, speed, cost, agent workload, and outcomes across relevant tasks and customer groups. Hold conditions and denominator definitions constant.
Do not let a weighted average conceal a material decline in an important dimension. If you use a composite score internally, disclose its components, weights, and guardrails to decision-makers. The sources cited here do not establish a universal weighting scheme for customer experience.
Keep monitoring the same measures after rollout, because traffic and real-world use can change. The point is not to prove that AI is fast or widely used; it is to establish, with evidence suited to the deployment, whether customers’ tasks are being completed more accurately and with acceptable effort and risk.
