First identify what failed: a new accessory that will not pair, an accessory already in Home showing “No Response,” or a Thread setup that says a border router is required. If only one manufacturer’s devices are affected, start with that maker’s app and equipment; if several makers’ devices fail, look for a shared Wi-Fi, Apple-device, hub, or network problem before removing or resetting anything.
First, identify the kind of connection problem
Pairing trouble and “No Response” are different problems. For a new accessory, confirm it supports Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter, and check its manual for required setup steps, extra hardware, or a firmware update. Some accessories must first be set up in the manufacturer’s app.

If a new accessory will not pair
- Check the accessory’s packaging or manual for Apple Home, HomeKit, or Matter support and any required bridge or other hardware.
- Follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions, including any requirement to use its app or install a firmware update.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the iPhone or iPad being used to add the accessory.
- If setup displays “Unable to add to home,” “Accessory Already Added,” or “network is incompatible,” use Apple’s setup-alert troubleshooting guidance and the accessory maker’s instructions. Do not assume these alerts all have the same cause.
If “No Response” affects one manufacturer
When only one maker’s accessories are failing, check their shared manufacturer app, firmware, and any third-party bridge before changing your broader network setup.
- Turn on Bluetooth on your iPhone or iPad.
- Check the manufacturer’s app for firmware updates for the affected accessories.
- Restart each affected accessory. For battery-powered devices, remove and reinsert the batteries if the manufacturer’s instructions permit it.
- Restart any third-party bridge used by those accessories, then restart the Apple home hub.
- If the problem remains, remove the accessory from Home, reset it using the manufacturer’s instructions, and add it again. Reset procedures differ by model.
If the accessory still does not respond, contact its manufacturer. Apple’s HomeKit and Matter accessory troubleshooting guide recommends this maker-specific path.

If “No Response” affects several manufacturers
Failures across different makers point more strongly to something they share, such as the controlling Apple device, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a home hub, or network software. While diagnosing, connect the iPhone, iPad, or Mac you use to the same Wi-Fi network as the accessories.
- Update the software on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac you use to control the home.
- Close and reopen the Home app.
- Connect the controlling Apple device to the same Wi-Fi network as the accessories, and turn on Bluetooth.
- Restart the affected accessories and check the manufacturers’ apps for firmware updates.
- If Thread accessories are affected, disconnect them from power for 5 minutes, reconnect them, then wait 10 minutes for the Thread network to stabilize before checking again. These are Apple’s troubleshooting intervals, not estimates of repair time.
- If the problem continues, restart the modem and router, third-party bridges, Apple home hubs, affected accessories, and the controlling Apple device.
- Check whether a VPN or third-party security software is interfering with local network connections.
For remote accessory control, Apple says a home hub must be set up. Its connection troubleshooting steps also recommend checking shared network and device conditions when several manufacturers’ accessories are affected.

If setup says “Thread Border Router Required” or “Needs Thread Network”
These alerts mean the accessory being set up requires a Thread border router. Before considering additional hardware, check whether you already have a compatible Thread-enabled device and whether it meets Apple’s current model and software requirements.
Apple lists Apple TV 4K (2nd generation), Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet, HomePod (2nd generation), and HomePod mini among its Thread-enabled devices. Pairing routes and software requirements can vary, so check Apple’s current Thread alert guidance and the accessory maker’s requirements before deciding that you need another device.

- For a battery-powered accessory paired using a Thread-enabled iPhone, check with the manufacturer whether a firmware update is needed for compatibility with iOS 18. Confirm current operating-system and accessory requirements, since they can change.
If the home hub or Wi-Fi seems to be the problem
Consider the hub’s own connection when the Home app reports a hub network problem or the hub itself is unresponsive; a weak Wi-Fi connection can affect a HomePod’s connection. Apple recommends moving a HomePod closer to the router, removing possible sources of wireless interference, and restarting it when relevant. Its HomePod troubleshooting instructions cover those steps. This is a targeted check for hub or Wi-Fi symptoms, not a universal fix for every accessory problem.
