To find out how much power your gaming PC draws while gaming, plug an AC power meter into the wall and connect the PC to the meter. It measures the computer’s total mains draw, including power-supply conversion losses. Record idle power separately, then measure a representative game over time; a single instant reading may not represent a changing workload.
What a wall meter measures—and what it does not
A plug-in AC meter measures power entering everything connected downstream of it. For a tower-only reading, connect only the PC. For a full gaming-setup reading, connect the display and any other equipment you want counted as well. State which boundary you used so readers can tell what the result includes.

This is different from software telemetry. Component sensors report selected internal readings; their sum is not the same as the PC’s AC draw at the wall. A PSU’s rated output is also not a measurement of the computer’s actual wall consumption.

- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
How to measure your PC’s draw while gaming
- Choose what to include. Decide whether you want the tower alone or the full setup, then connect only those devices downstream of the meter.
- Check the meter. Confirm that its plug type and electrical rating suit your region and the connected load. Follow the meter manufacturer’s instructions.
- Measure idle. Let the PC settle and background activity calm down. Record the meter’s watt reading.
- Run a representative game. Use the settings and frame-rate conditions you normally play with. Note the game, settings, test duration, and whether streaming or other background workloads were active.
- Capture changing power over time. Log readings during the session and calculate an average, or use the meter’s accumulated energy reading. Avoid treating one momentary watt figure as the universal draw of a gaming PC.
Intel describes logging power during a timed workload, deriving average power from the log, and calculating energy from average power multiplied by workload duration.
Understand watts and kilowatt-hours
Watts (W) describe power at a given moment; kilowatt-hours (kWh) describe energy accumulated over time. If you have an average power reading, estimate energy with this calculation:

- Overload Protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the word "OVERLOAD" and the LCD display will keep flashing, the buzzer will keep making a bi sound to warn the users. All the buttons will quit working and can only work again when the overload alarm has been cleared by raising the setting value or removing the appliance. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "MODE" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- KWH Alarm: Our power monitor plug has a upgraded power consumption alarm function. You can set the alarm power consumption for the appliances you monitored. Once the accumulated power consumption reaches the set alarm power consumption, the word "kwh alarm" will be displayed and keep flashing, the LCD will also keep flashing, and the buzzer will keep making a bi sound all the time to warn the users
- Data Memory Function: The watt meter plug in will record your power consumption data when you remove energy meter from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. All setting data and cumulative data(electricity quantity, cost, unit price, time) will be saved. You can directly see the last data when you use the electric usage meter plug next time(NOT including current, voltage, power, power factors). This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
Energy (kWh) = average power (W) ÷ 1,000 × elapsed hours
For example, use the average from your measured gaming session—not a peak or isolated reading—in the calculation. The result covers only the devices connected through the meter and the duration you measured.

Wall meter or software readings?
| Method | What it tells you | Useful for | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plug-in AC meter | Total mains power for the devices connected downstream, including PSU conversion losses | Measuring tower-only or whole-setup wall draw, and accumulated kWh if supported | Requires a suitable meter and physical access to the outlet |
| Software sensor readings | Values reported by selected components or sensors | Supplementary context about component behavior during a workload | Does not by itself establish total AC draw at the wall |
What affects a gaming power reading?
- Workload: different games and settings can produce different readings.
- Frame rate and test conditions: the frame-rate limit and other settings affect what the PC is doing.
- Other activity: streaming and background tasks can change the result.
- Measurement duration: a longer timed session or averaged log is more informative for fluctuating loads than a single snapshot.
- Measurement boundary: including a display or other peripherals changes the reported total.
There is no current representative typical wattage established here for gaming PCs, so a measurement of your own setup is more useful than relying on a generic number. Historical context should not be mistaken for a current expectation: a 2016 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory paper modelled gaming-computer configurations at 923 W, 601 W, and 331 W, including displays, using assumptions tied to components and marketplace conditions from roughly 2014. The paper also highlights how usage mode, duration, workload, and configuration affect energy use. Those figures are not current typical measurements.

Look for a plug-in watt meter with a suitable electrical rating and plug compatibility for your region. If you want to work out energy use over a session, check whether it displays accumulated kWh as well as watts. A consumer how-to article updated 22 July 2024 names the SURAIELEC Watt Meter as an example, but does not establish current availability, price, accuracy, regional suitability, or a specific model. Treat it as an example rather than a verified recommendation.
