Choose the measurement method by the property and operating regime you need to characterize. A quasi-static Berlincourt meter measures piezoelectric coefficients such as d33; impedance measurements can support calculation of a broader set of linear parameters; large-signal tests capture ferroelectric hysteresis; and optical or acoustic methods characterize vibration and sound-field behavior. Report the specimen, test conditions, method and standard, because a basic material measurement does not automatically predict the behavior of a finished component.
Start with the property you need
“Electromechanical properties” is not one measurement. It can refer to a low-frequency piezoelectric charge coefficient, a set of linear parameters derived from electrical response, behavior under a large electric field, mechanical vibration, or acoustic output. Decide whether you need a basic material parameter or the response of a particular transducer or other finished component before choosing a test.

- Quasi-static piezoelectric coefficient: measure d33 directly with a d33 meter, also called a Berlincourt meter. Fraunhofer IKTS also describes quasi-static measurement of d31.
- Broader linear characterization: measure electrical impedance over a range of frequencies and use the response to derive relevant parameters, including permittivity and loss angle.
- Large-signal ferroelectric behavior: record charge/displacement or polarization/strain hysteresis under electrical excitation.
- Vibration or acoustic behavior: use laser Doppler vibrometry for surface motion or acoustic measurement for sound-field quantities.
Compare the available methods
| Method | What it measures or supports | Best suited to | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quasi-static d33/d31 meter (Berlincourt meter) | Piezoelectric charge constants under low-frequency loading | A direct d33 measurement; d31 measurement is also described by Fraunhofer IKTS | ISO 19622:2018 specifies a direct quasi-static method for d33. The result is a coefficient measured on a specimen, not a guaranteed finished-component value. |
| Electrical impedance measurement or spectroscopy | Complex impedance and, through analysis, linear piezoelectric parameters, permittivity and loss angle | Characterization beyond a single coefficient | Apply harmonic voltage at varying frequencies and measure current response. Derived values depend on the specimen, test configuration and measurement frequencies. |
| Large-signal charge/displacement or polarization/strain measurement | Ferroelectric response and hysteresis | Questions about behavior under larger electrical excitation | State the excitation and whether the recorded response is charge/displacement or polarization/strain. |
| Laser Doppler vibrometry | Surface vibration velocity and displacement, including spatial maps | Non-contact vibration characterization, material-parameter identification, transducer characterization or model validation | It characterizes vibration behavior; it is not a substitute for a direct quasi-static coefficient measurement. |
| Acoustic measurement | Sound fields and acoustic quantities such as impedance, sound velocity and attenuation | Acoustic or ultrasonic component behavior | Interpret results in the context of the component, test setup and acoustic environment. |
How to measure d33 with the quasi-static method
For a direct quasi-static d33 measurement, use a d33/Berlincourt meter and follow the applicable procedure. ISO 19622:2018 specifies this method for piezoelectric ceramics. ISO’s catalog identifies it as edition 1, published in April 2018, and says the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2023 and remains current.
The d33 meter is the appropriate choice when the question is specifically the specimen’s quasi-static d33 coefficient. It does not provide the broader parameter set available from impedance analysis, nor does it by itself characterize large-signal hysteresis, surface vibration or acoustic output. Fraunhofer IKTS also describes quasi-static d31 measurement, but the cited ISO method is specifically for d33.

Use impedance measurements for broader linear characterization
In an impedance measurement, a harmonic voltage is applied at varying frequencies and the resulting current response is measured. The measurement yields complex impedance; analysis of that response can be used to calculate permittivity and loss angle and to determine a broader set of linear parameters. Fraunhofer IKTS describes impedance measurements on disk- and cuboid-shaped specimens.
Keep the measured quantities distinct from the derived ones in your report: complex impedance and current response are observations, while permittivity, loss angle and other parameters are calculated from the measurement. Frequency and test configuration matter, so a derived parameter should not be presented without the conditions and method used to obtain it.

- This Ceramic Piezo Vibration Piece Sensor buffers a piezoelectric transducer that responds to strain changes by generating a measurable output voltage change which is proportional with the strength of vibration. So you can know the extent of vibration. Different from digital vibration sensor that only accounts times, this analog one can tell extent of vibration.

Large-signal ferroelectric measurements
If the question concerns behavior under larger electrical excitation, use a large-signal measurement that records charge/displacement or polarization/strain hysteresis. This addresses a different regime from a quasi-static coefficient measurement. Report which response was recorded and the electrical excitation used rather than treating the result as interchangeable with a small-signal or quasi-static value.

Acoustic measurement
Acoustic methods address sound-field behavior and can measure acoustic impedance, sound velocity and attenuation. They are useful when the target is acoustic or ultrasonic component behavior. The component and acoustic test environment are part of the measurement context, so report them along with the measured quantity.
Match the standard to the measurement regime
Do not treat one standard as covering every electromechanical test. ISO 19622:2018 is specifically a direct quasi-static d33 method for piezoelectric ceramics. BSI presents EN 50324 as a three-part series: Part 1 covers terms and definitions, Part 2 covers low-power measurement methods, and Part 3 covers high-power measurement methods. Select the applicable standard for the property and excitation regime being measured.

The accessible BSI scope text also cautions that ceramic composition and manufacturing variation make specified material coefficients typical mean values. Tests on simple specimens provide basic material parameters; they guide expectations for commercial components, but do not necessarily reproduce or guarantee finished-component performance.
A practical measurement workflow
- Define the question. Specify whether you need quasi-static d33 or d31, broader linear parameters, large-signal hysteresis, surface vibration, or acoustic output.
- Select the method and standard. Use ISO 19622:2018 for the direct quasi-static d33 method. For low- or high-power methods, consult the relevant part of EN 50324; its scope distinguishes those regimes.
- Describe the test object and conditions. Record specimen shape, electrodes, electrical and mechanical boundary conditions, frequency or signal regime, and whether you tested a material specimen or a finished component.
- Separate observations from calculated values. For impedance work, identify the measured current response and complex impedance separately from calculated permittivity, loss angle and other derived parameters.
- Interpret the result at the right level. State whether the reported result is a basic material parameter or a component response. Do not present a simple-specimen value as a guaranteed prediction of commercial component behavior.
What to include in the report
A useful result is reproducible and interpretable only when the measurement context travels with the number. Report:
