Buying bitcoin and deciding where to keep it are separate choices. You can buy through a provider and later withdraw to a wallet you control, if the provider permits withdrawals. A custodian controls access to the private keys; with self-custody, you control the keys and take responsibility for securing and recovering them. Neither option removes bitcoin’s price risk or makes transactions risk-free.
Before you buy: decide what risks you can accept
Bitcoin’s value can change rapidly, and no one can guarantee a return. Decide why you want to buy and how much loss you could tolerate; this guide cannot predict prices or determine whether bitcoin suits your finances. The FTC’s consumer guidance on cryptocurrency and scams warns about volatility and guaranteed-return claims.

Also separate two questions: which provider, if any, you will use to purchase bitcoin, and who will control the keys afterward. Bitcoin.org describes several ways to buy bitcoin in its getting-started guide. The right method depends on the services available where you live and their terms.

- Check that the provider serves your jurisdiction. Review its official terms and current information before opening an account. Availability, supported payment methods, identity requirements, withdrawal access, and fees can vary and change.
- Understand the costs and withdrawal rules. Check purchase or trading fees, transfer fees, and any other charges that apply. Confirm whether you can withdraw bitcoin to a wallet you control, what limits or waiting periods apply, and whether withdrawals can be restricted under the provider’s terms. Buying through an exchange does not require leaving your bitcoin there, but withdrawal capability matters.
- Secure the account. Use a strong, unique password and turn on multifactor authentication if available. These are among the account-security steps in the SEC staff’s retail crypto-asset custody bulletin.
- Pause on pressure or unusual instructions. Treat unsolicited demands to buy crypto, urgent transfer requests, and promises of guaranteed profits as scam warnings. The FTC says crypto is not a safe way to pay someone who contacts you unexpectedly or claims you must move money to protect it.
Choose who controls the keys
A wallet manages the keys used to access and authorize transactions; bitcoin itself is recorded on the network rather than stored inside a device. The custody choice affects who handles key security and recovery, not whether the value can fall.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
| Option | Who controls key access | Main trade-off | Best fit to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Provider custody | The provider | Convenient account access, but you depend on the provider’s security, solvency, operating status, and withdrawal terms. | People who prioritize convenience and are comfortable with counterparty dependence. |
| Mobile or software self-custody wallet | You | Direct control, with responsibility for device security, backups, and avoiding mistaken transfers or phrase theft. | People who need regular access and can reliably protect recovery information. |
| Hardware self-custody wallet | You | Designed to keep key use more isolated from internet-connected devices, but requires careful setup and backup and is less convenient for frequent mobile use. | People considering offline storage for bitcoin they do not need to access often. |
The comparison is about custody and access, not a ranking of brands. The SEC staff bulletin identifies potential provider risks such as hacks, closure, bankruptcy, and restricted withdrawals, and advises readers to understand custody arrangements and fees. It is staff guidance, not a Commission rule, regulation, or statement; the bulletin expressly says it has no legal force or effect.
What self-custody requires
Self-custody removes dependence on a provider to access the keys, but transfers the security and recovery burden to you. Anyone who obtains the recovery phrase can control the bitcoin associated with it. If you lose access to the phrase and have no working recovery method, you may lose access permanently. Bitcoin.org puts it plainly: “If you permanently lose access to your wallet—for example by losing your recovery phrase—your funds are gone permanently.” Read its user guidance on what to know before choosing this route.

- Get wallet software or hardware through its verified official distribution channel. For a hardware wallet, buy from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller rather than relying on an unverified listing.
- On first setup, inspect the device and packaging, and generate the recovery phrase yourself. Bitcoin.org warns that counterfeit devices may arrive with a phrase already known to an attacker or with modified firmware.
- Follow the wallet’s own backup instructions. Keep the phrase private and protected from loss or damage; consider secure physical backups in more than one location.
- Do not photograph the phrase or upload it to cloud storage, email, or another internet-connected account. No legitimate support team needs your recovery phrase or private key.
- Plan what will happen if the device is lost or damaged, and ensure that any trusted person involved in your recovery plan understands the safeguards without exposing the phrase unnecessarily.
Transfer bitcoin only after checking the details
Bitcoin transactions are generally irreversible. A mistyped or substituted address can send bitcoin somewhere you cannot recover it. Before confirming a transfer, verify the entire receiving address using the destination wallet or device—not just the first and last characters. If a small test transfer is supported and its fee is acceptable, it can help you check the process, but it does not guarantee that a later transfer will be safe.
Never share a recovery phrase or private key in response to a support request, and never send bitcoin because someone is rushing you, promising guaranteed returns, or claiming a transfer is needed to protect your money. The FTC warns that crypto payments are typically not reversible and recovery may not be possible.

Protection and loss limits vary by country
For U.S. readers, the FTC says cryptocurrency holdings are not government-insured like U.S. bank deposits. That statement concerns U.S. protections; it should not be taken as a description of protections in every country. Check the rules and consumer protections that apply where you live, and do not treat insurance, a provider’s security claims, or self-custody as protection against bitcoin’s market-price changes.
