Use Playwright’s mask screenshot option to cover changing elements with a solid overlay, or inject CSS with style to hide or normalize them. For visual regression tests, put the mask or stylesheet on toHaveScreenshot(). Disable animation separately when motion—not live data—is causing differences.
Mask a changing element with a locator
Pass one or more Playwright locators in the screenshot’s mask array. Playwright covers each matched element’s bounding box; the default overlay is pink (#FF00FF). Use a stable test ID or a suitably scoped locator so the mask covers only the volatile region.

});Masking preserves the element’s layout, but replaces its visible contents with a solid box. The mask also applies to invisible matches. If the locator can match hidden elements and you do not want those included, narrow the locator or filter it for visible elements using the locator APIs appropriate to your Playwright version.

These options are documented in the Playwright Page API. The API reference lists maskColor as available from Playwright v1.35; check the version installed in your project before using it.
Hide or restyle volatile content with CSS
A screenshot-time stylesheet is a better fit when you want to hide selected elements or normalize their appearance rather than cover their boxes. The style option injects CSS for that capture:

});Use a narrowly scoped selector: a broad rule can hide meaningful content and make a screenshot misleading. Playwright documents that screenshot styles pierce Shadow DOM and apply to inner frames. The style option is listed as available from Playwright v1.41 in the Page API.

For screenshot assertions, put equivalent CSS in a file and pass its path with stylePath. The official visual comparisons guide describes this option for filtering volatile elements.
Apply masking to visual regression assertions
When comparing a screenshot against a stored baseline, configure the mask on toHaveScreenshot() so the changing region is excluded as part of the assertion:

});Playwright Test screenshot assertions wait until two consecutive page screenshots—or locator screenshots—are identical, then compare the result with the expected snapshot. This settling behavior does not remove content that changes independently, such as a live clock; mask or restyle that content explicitly. Assertion thresholds and maximum differing-pixel settings adjust comparison tolerance; they do not eliminate the changing content. Prefer identifying and masking or restyling the volatile region instead of widening tolerances to conceal it.

Stabilize animation separately
For regular screenshot APIs, animations defaults to 'allow'. Set it to 'disabled' to stop CSS animations, CSS transitions, and Web Animations during capture:

});Finite animations are fast-forwarded to completion; infinite animations are canceled to their initial state and resumed after the screenshot. Screenshot assertions default to disabled animations. Animation control addresses motion, not independently changing data, so keep a mask or stylesheet for live values. Details are in the Page API and PageAssertions API.

Choose the capture scope
Make sure the screenshot scope and the mask locator refer to the content you intend to capture. Playwright supports viewport and full-page captures, as well as screenshots of a specific element.
- Viewport: use
page.screenshot()for the current viewport. - Full page: use
page.screenshot({ fullPage: true })to capture the full scrollable page. - One element: use
locator.screenshot()when only a component or region matters. Locator screenshots scroll the element into view and wait for actionability.

Which stabilization method should you use?

Troubleshoot inconsistent masks and screenshots
The volatile content is still visible
- Confirm that the locator actually matches the changing element and is included in the screenshot’s
maskarray. - Check that your mask locator corresponds to the capture scope: viewport, full page, or element.
- If you chose CSS, confirm the selector matches the element and is not overridden; use a narrowly targeted rule with appropriate specificity.
Unexpected elements are masked
A locator that matches multiple elements masks each match, including invisible matches. Narrow it with a stable identifier or more specific selector; filter for visible elements if hidden matches should not be covered.

The screenshot assertion still changes between runs
Two identical consecutive captures help the assertion wait for a stable rendering, but they cannot make independently changing data constant. Mask or restyle that region. If the difference is animation, use the assertion’s animation behavior or configure animation disabling for the capture.
A screenshot option is rejected
Check the installed Playwright version against the API reference: maskColor is documented from v1.35 and screenshot style from v1.41. Also confirm that you are using Playwright Test for toHaveScreenshot() and the appropriate assertion option, such as stylePath, rather than a page-screenshot option in the wrong context.
