OBS Studio is the better starting point for most YouTube streamers who want free, open-source software, broad operating-system support and extensive production controls. XSplit Broadcaster is a reasonable alternative for Windows users who prefer its workflow or want built-in simultaneous output to multiple services with Premium. Neither is a universal performance winner: choose based on platform, features and budget, then test your own setup before going live.

Which should you choose?
Choose OBS Studio if you want free software and flexibility
- You want a free, open-source application rather than a subscription-based product.
- You use macOS or Linux, or want an option listed for Windows, macOS and Linux.
- You want detailed scene, audio, transition and hotkey controls, with plugins and scripts available for extending the workflow.
Choose XSplit if its Windows workflow or Premium features fit
- You use Windows and prefer XSplit’s drag-and-drop source composition or recording workflow.
- You want simultaneous output to multiple services through a Premium license rather than a third-party service.
- You are comfortable checking the current plan comparison for which features are included in Free versus Premium.
These are feature-fit recommendations, not a claim that one interface is easier for everyone. OBS offers many controls, which can reward customization but also mean more choices to configure.

Platform and performance considerations
OBS’s download page lists Windows 10/11, macOS 13.0 or newer, and Linux distribution routes. XSplit’s cited requirements are for Windows 10 64-bit, so OBS is the clearer starting point if you need macOS or Linux support. Product requirements and supported platforms can change; consult each vendor’s current page when installing.
XSplit lists minimum requirements of a second-generation Core i5 or equivalent, 8 GB RAM and DirectX 10.1-or-better GeForce- or Radeon-class graphics; it recommends a second-generation Core i7 or equivalent and 5 Mbps upload for HD stream quality. These are XSplit’s published requirements and guidance, not a comparison against OBS. OBS cautions that streaming at 60 fps can tax a system more than 30 fps. There is no controlled performance comparison here, so do not assume either program will run better on your machine.

Test the setup before a public stream
- Confirm platform and plan fit. Verify your operating system against the relevant vendor’s current requirements and, for XSplit, make sure the Free-tier limits or Premium features match your intended output.
- Build the scene you will actually use. Add the sources and audio you need, then check composition, transitions and sound levels. In OBS, use its scene and audio controls; in XSplit, use its source composition workflow.
- Check the target settings on your own hardware. Higher frame rates can raise system load; OBS specifically notes that 60 fps can be more taxing than 30 fps. Choose settings your machine and upload connection can sustain.
- Make a local recording or a private/unlisted test stream. Watch for dropped frames, audio problems, overlays in the wrong place or a system that cannot keep up. Adjust and test again rather than discovering problems in a public broadcast.
- Verify the YouTube stream configuration. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the platform’s encoder workflow. Confirm the account and stream setup in YouTube Studio and use the correct stream key in your software; never share that key publicly.
Copyright and YouTube policy still apply
Streaming software does not grant rights to the video, music or other material you broadcast. Use content you own or have permission to use, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-streaming rules before broadcasting. A technically successful stream can still face platform restrictions if its content violates those rules.
