For Xbox Series X|S, keep games you want to play without transferring on the internal SSD or a compatible Storage Expansion Card. Use a standard USB external drive to archive games you are not playing; optimized Series X|S games stored on USB may need to be moved before they can launch. That split lets you keep a larger library without repeatedly deleting and downloading games.

Choose storage based on whether you want to play games directly

Storage option Best use Can optimized Series X|S games launch from it?
Internal SSD Games you are actively playing and want immediately available. Yes.
Compatible Storage Expansion Card More space for games you want to keep directly playable. Xbox says the Seagate card maintains internal SSD performance; Xbox also names the WD_BLACK C50 as a supported expansion-card product. Xbox Seagate product page; SanDisk support for WD_BLACK C50. Yes, when the game and card are supported. Xbox Wire says games can be installed to and played from the Seagate card. Xbox Wire.
Standard USB external drive Archive games you are not playing, or keep a library available for transfers. Optimized Series X|S games stored on USB need to be moved to the internal drive or a Storage Expansion Card to play. Seagate USB guidance.

In practice, the choice is whether avoiding a transfer is worth buying a compatible expansion card. A USB drive can hold dormant titles so you do not have to delete and redownload them, but it is an archive-and-transfer option for optimized games rather than a substitute for the expansion card’s direct-play role. The cited sources explain these functional differences but do not establish current prices, stock, or regional capacity availability; check manufacturer and retailer listings for those details.

Set up a simple active-library and archive routine

  1. Keep current games on fast storage. Leave games you are playing on the internal SSD, or install them to a compatible expansion card if you want more games ready to launch without moving them.
  2. Move dormant games to USB storage. Use a standard external USB drive as a library for titles you have paused or finished. Xbox Wire documents moving and copying games between local and external storage. Xbox Wire card announcement.
  3. Choose the destination for new installs. Xbox Wire says the expansion card can be selected as a game installation destination. Select storage according to whether you want the game directly playable or are archiving it.
  4. Move a game back when you are ready to play. For an optimized Series X|S game on USB, transfer it to the internal SSD or a compatible Storage Expansion Card before launching. Transfer time varies with the drive, game size, and console conditions, so allow for it rather than relying on a fixed estimate.

Xbox’s current support search result on storage management does not provide a verified menu path here, so use the storage-management controls shown on your console rather than relying on an unverified sequence of Settings labels. The available information also does not establish a universal game-size estimate or how many titles fit on a particular drive; game sizes and usable capacity vary.

What to check before adding an external drive or card

  • Direct play: If you want optimized Series X|S games to launch without moving them, choose the internal SSD or a compatible Storage Expansion Card, not a generic USB drive.
  • Capacity and cost: Compare the capacity you need with current regional listings. The cited product information does not establish current pricing or stock.
  • Transfer tolerance: A USB archive can be practical if you are comfortable moving games when your active lineup changes; the transfer duration depends on the setup and title.
  • Compatibility: Confirm that the specific drive or card suits your console and intended games. The cited sources name Seagate and WD_BLACK C50 expansion cards, but do not provide a complete list of every compatible product.

Quick Resume is not a reason to avoid USB archiving: in Xbox Wire’s 2020 storage primer, Xbox Director of Program Management Jason Ronald said game state is persisted on the internal SSD, so Quick Resume works regardless of whether a game is being played from the internal SSD, the Seagate Storage Expansion Card, or an external USB 3.1 HDD or SSD.
