How to Find Dinosaur Exhibits and Fossil Displays Near You

To find dinosaur exhibits near you, search with a city, postal code, or map location, then confirm the specimens and visit details on the venue’s own website before traveling. Search natural history museums, university and science museums, parks, and visitor centers—not just places called “dinosaur museums.”

How to search for dinosaur exhibits nearby

  1. Start with a specific location. Try searches such as “natural history museum dinosaurs near [city],” “dinosaur fossils on display near [postal code],” “paleontology museum near me,” or “dinosaur exhibit near [city].” A map search can help you compare travel distance and routes.
  2. Search more than one type of venue. Natural history museums, university museums, science museums, national or regional parks, and visitor centers may all have public fossil displays. A search limited to “dinosaur museum” can miss them.
  3. Use the results as leads, not confirmation. Open the institution’s official exhibit page and look for a named gallery or specimen and wording such as “on display,” “permanent,” or “currently open.” Search the page for the dinosaur name if you have one in mind.
  4. Locate the gallery. Check the official floor plan or gallery map once you have chosen a venue. For Smithsonian museums, the Find Your Place tool supports map and state or territory selection; the general museum map lists the Hall of Fossils – Deep Time and a T. rex Skull.
  5. Verify practical details shortly before the visit. Check hours, admission, closures, transport and accessibility information, and whether timed entry or a seasonal shuttle applies. Recheck on the day if weather or road conditions could affect access.

How to tell whether a fossil is actually on display

A museum’s collection may contain fossils that are not available to visitors. Distinguish a public exhibit from research collections by checking the current exhibit page, gallery information, and visitor map. If a particular dinosaur or specimen is the reason for your trip, search for its name on the official page or contact the venue to confirm it is currently viewable.

Also check whether the exhibit identifies original fossils, casts, or other reproductions. For example, the American Museum of Natural History says about 600 fossil specimens are displayed in its fourth-floor fossil halls, including approximately 100 dinosaur specimens; it reports that 85% of displayed specimens are actual fossils rather than casts or reproductions. Its Dinosaurs on Display page describes an exhibit path organized around evolutionary relationships. Those figures describe the museum’s displays, not a general rule for other institutions.

Why stored fossils may not be visitable

Public galleries are different from collections kept for research. At Dinosaur National Monument, the National Park Service says many objects are on public display, but the Collections Room, Accession Room, and Paleontology Lab are not casual-tour areas. Research access requires advance written approval and scheduling; visitors should plan around public exhibits instead. See the NPS collections information for the access distinction.
